Business Need
Problem
• Mercury currently has limited capabilities for digital visualization for product development purposes. In effort to move issue recognition for Craftsmanship and Surface evaluation earlier in the product development process, Mercury must invest in advanced visualization tools.
Solution• An advanced visualization tool and environment to be able to review
the finished product at a very early stage in the product development process

Pain Points
• Rework or replacing production tooling during DV phase• Money and time wasted to rush changes after finding issues
later in the product development process• Unable to synthesize ergonomics for service unless
components are prototyped to physically check it• Natural silos between departments
• Industrial Design, Engine Design, Manufacturing and Quality

Benefits We Identified
• Seeing the faults early in the development process, before a single prototype is created
• Bringing ownership of the design to all segments of Engineering
• Utilizing the investment made in the CAD data creation• One source of the truth (Teamcenter & CAD data)• Revision control of a visual BOM• Update content more quickly in a single collaborating
environment

PLM Project Kick Off
• Business proposals were brought to the executive sponsors and two segments were identified• Industrial Design - Early Design Review• Manufacturing Assembly - Station Training Videos
• The teams met to identify roles and responsibilities for the respective projects • The roles consisted of and not limited to:
• Requirement Gathering• As-Is identification• Alignment and Approval• Investigation• Benchmarking• Conceptualizing• Implementation

Industrial Design High Level Requirements• Real-time Design Review Requirement
• Surface review • Accurately represent full Scale 1:1• Realistic material finishes and colors with on-the-fly edit capability• Full assembly validation and review. Allow the user to take measurements of the assemblies or components• Environment Ball Maps
• Canned Review Requirements• Fly-by animation to simulate the person walking into and throughout the assembly• Turn table• Animations need to be minimum 30 frames/second
• Software Requirements• Texture mapping capable (more detail)• Interface with native alias and pro/e files• High resolution• Real-time motion and review without delay• Create the animations
• Hardware Requirements• High resolution• Real-time rendering processing with no delay• 4k video card
• Display Requirement (Benchmark)• Projection surface of minimum 8' vertical – Flat Surface• 4K output>Rear projection>LCD Matrix>3D Capable

Manufacturing High Level Requirements• Key operator training through existing shop floor terminal
• Quickly bring new operators up to speed on stations• Animations always available for operators to reference
• Detailed work element description• Highlight key aspects of at each assembly line station for improved build quality
• Utilized 3D CAD data for operator work instructions• Better visual aid vs. traditional 2D work instructions• Ability to update as CAD updates• Improve build quality accuracy by validating assembly operations order• Ensure pre-build quality through a virtual build
• Use of MFG content for realistic station operation• Provide a better understanding for the shop floor operator
• Key quality checks • Highlighting parts and/or surfaces• Add notes or details for better operator understanding• Use of transparency to show additional detail
• Reduce time to create shop floor animated content compared to traditional video content• Traditional video footage no longer needed

Our Search for the right software
• Internet• Wikipedia• Web searches: Keyword, software specific, industry, etc
• People• Business contacts from other companies• Consult with others in our own company who have come from
different companies who might have used similar tools• Contacted our Sales Rep from Siemens
• He was able to lend a few more suggestions of where to look
• Software• Researching known products in this segment and reviewing their
competitors

Investigation and Conceptualizing
• After we were aligned with what we expect the solution to provide, we continued with our investigation with sampling various software products• Many companies provide a 14-30 day trial• Other companies did not provide trials or returned our calls
• We compiled a list of software products that we wanted to sample• We concentrated on forums, discussion boards and other sources
for reviews• This helped us prioritize the list so we could

Teamcenter Visualization
• 4 different license levels• Base, Standard, Professional, Mockup
• Utilized by engineering as more of a communication tool• Ability to view CAD in a lightweight format without the
need for CAD software• Basic measurement, part comparing, and part
manipulation capabilities• Apply basic part finishes, highlighting, and environment
settings
