wonderful thing happened to the HBA on the way toits 14th annual “Woman of the Year” (WOTY) awardsluncheon: It became a powerful agent for positive
change within the biopharmaceutical industry. This 26-yearmetamorphosis from a fledgling association with an honorable,timely mission to a seasoned, respected industry catalyst wasapparent at the May 1st WOTY event; the values and the voiceof that positive change were embodied in the 2003 WOTY hon-oree, Catherine Angell Sohn, PharmD, Vice President ofWorldwide Business Development for Consumer Healthcare(CH) at GlaxoSmithKline (GSK; Philadelphia, PA), memberof GSK CH’s Executive Committee.
“It is a humbling honor to have been nominated by somany GSK colleagues and other colleagues for this awardand to be recognized among such an august group of priorHBA Woman of the Year recipients,” said Sohn to her peersgathered at the Hilton New York in Manhattan to honor her

at St. Joseph’s University (Philadelphia,PA) for the third in a series of highly popu-lar and successful CONNECTIONSMentoring events.
What is the CONNECTIONSProgram?
CONNECTIONS is a unique HBA
career development program series de-signed to create opportunities for men-tors and those who wish to be mentored.It offers HBA members the opportunityto meet, network, and begin to form po-tential mentoring relationships. By creat-ing the appropriate opportunities andcombining those opportunities with ba-sic education about the mentoring pro-cess, the CONNECTIONS Program hasgenerated an extensive network of profes-sionals who are either being mentored oracting as mentors across the healthcareindustry. CONNECTIONS events are
held two to three times each year, with thenext event, to be sponsored by Eisai, Inc. (USheadquarters, Teaneck, NJ) scheduled forSeptember 25th in northern New Jersey(watch your mail for details).
The March event followed the famil-iar format of previous CONNECTIONSprograms, and it featured a new panel ofexperts, many new mentors and all new“mentees.”

he HBA’s March 4th evening seminar,“The Influence of the Economy on theHealthcare Industry,” offered encour-
aging words. The expert panel agreed that de-spite criticism, this industry is in a position tobuild business and realize tremendous oppor-tunities—especially if everyone works together.
Hosted by Wyeth at the PhiladelphiaMarriott West (West Conshohocken, PA), theevening was more than successful; it wasthought provoking, honest and hopeful. Themoderator, Eve Dryer, President, SIGNOVAHealthcare Communications (Philadelphia,PA) opened the session. She was followed by apanel of industry experts: J Pegues, Senior VicePresident, Marketing and Business Develop-ment, Intracorp (a division of CIGNA, Phila-delphia, PA); Marily H. Rhudy, Vice Presi-dent, Public Affairs, Wyeth (Madison, NJ),and Kathleen Harrington, Assistant Secre-tary, Public Affairs, US Department of La-bor (Washington, DC).
In his overview of changes in our industryover the last 50 years, Pegues noted that themanagement of healthcare shows early signsof moving back to an older model. “In the1940s, the patient arranged for care, used it,and paid for it,” he said. Then we entered anera in which the “experts” insisted the con-sumer couldn’t comprehend the complexmessages of the health care system. Now we’removing back to the patient being in charge.
And in an era where “Every eight secondssomeone in this country is turning 50 and get-ting sick,” Pegues noted thereis a tremendous craving amongconsumers for health servicesand information (especiallyamong the health-oriented 76million baby boomers). Thepundits, he said, bemoan thefact that the percentage of grossdomestic product (GDP)spent on health care already hasrisen from 13 percent to 14.2
and seems headed toward 17 percent by end of thedecade. Pegues, however, asked, “What’s wrongwith 20 percent GDP if the care provides longer,healthier life?”
Picking up on that, Rhudy pointed to thefailure in 2002 to pass the seniors prescriptiondrug bill. “Seniors don’t have the drugs theyneed. That’s a disgrace. We can afford it. Thir-teen percent is not too big an increase. The GDPought to be raised.”
Rhudy urged a bipartisan effort—and notjust in government—to improve US healthcare.That’s why, she said, “the people in our indus-try are working more cooperatively with tradeassociations, doctors, hospitals, etc., to make surethat our citizens have managed care coverage,”including access to affordable prescriptions.
Harrington agreed. “Shame on us for whathappened in the 1990s. [While] we were blam-ing each other for the problems, costs were goingup” leading, she said, to the “unfulfilled promiseof managed care. The economic pressures werenot that bad. There was enough money.”
A particularly worrisome statistic now for theeconomy is that 8 out of 10 of the 42 million un-insured are in working families, noted Harrington.When those people ultimately get sick, they can’twork, can’t pay bills. That’s why smaller employers(50 workers or less) should be able to have the ben-efit of pooling risk and sharing cost when pro-viding health care. “Ninety-seven percent oflarge employers offer health insurance; only27% of the smaller employers do,” she said.
These and other key issues continued to bediscussed as part of a Q & A session duringwhich Harrington concluded: “We must tacklethese issues together. If we don’t, we all pay.” �

At the March meeting, HBA President NancyLarsen, President, PROmedica Communications,Inc. (New York, NY), honored Dianna Main, Presi-dent, DWM Healthcare Communications (Edison, NJ)as the recipient of the HBA’s “Time to Make a Differ-ence” award. Main was nominated for her role as oneof the key drivers behind the development of the HBAweb site. Since the launch, Main has continued toevolve the site so that it becomes a useful resource forHBA members and prospective members.

ences with being mentored and being‘mentees.’ Some experiences were suc-cesses, others failures. But all the storiesprovided important learning and guidanceto help our participants build successfulmentoring relationships,” said LisaCourtade, HBA Co-Director of CareerDevelopment and Director, Global Busi-ness Research, Pfizer Inc (Peapack, NJ).Courtade also served as moderator for thisevent. The evening’s panelists includedTerri Maciolek, PhD, Senior VP, Strate-gic Marketing Corp (Bala Cynwyd, PA);Sue Dietrich, Senior Director of SalesPlanning, Centocor, Inc. (Malvern, PA),and Diane Rodwell, President, ColVoce Consulting (Exton, PA) and formerPresident of TrueNorth Advertising.
After a brief “meet, greet and eat,” dur-ing which attendees could arrive and un-wind, the program began. During the firstsession, panelists gathered at the front ofthe room and shared stories of mentoringwith the audience. Panelists discussed thefiner points of mentoring and beingmentored, with the intent of educatingthe audience on the skills involved in each.
“There is an art, a skill set, required tobeing either a mentor or a ‘mentee,’” notedCourtade. “Perhaps the most importantpoint conveyed by the panelists was thatmentoring is a process in which you getout what you put in. As a ‘mentee,’ youcan’t just show up and say, ‘okay, mentorme, advance my career.’ You have to bean equal partner in the process.”
Other key points noted by the panel-ists included:● “Mentees” have just as much, if not
more, responsibility for creating andmaintaining the mentoring relationship.
● Mentors also receive benefits fromthe experience in terms of personalgrowth and satisfaction.
● The “chemistry” between mentor and“mentee” is crucial and can’t be forced.
● It is important, when entering amentoring relationship, for both par-ties to set expectations and goals, andthat these be realistic.
● Mentoring and being mentored isn’tsimply about finding an executive-level person to help you advance yourcareer. Mentoring must be a mutu-ally beneficial relationship to be suc-
cessful. In addition, one can bementored by a male or a female, bysomeone who is senior or junior toyou. One can be mentored by some-one who works within your companyor outside of your company. Generally,mentor relationships work best whenthey are outside of one’s “chain of com-mand.” A supervisor can “coach.” A“mentee” can talk about weaknessesand aspirations with a mentor thatmay be difficult or impossible to dis-cuss with one’s current boss.
● The general purposes of the mentorrelationship are to: enhance profes-sional growth and development; helpothers identify career goals; developstrategies for leveraging working rela-tionships and build a professional net-work; assist in successfully transitioningfrom one role to another.Next, Beverly Burton, Consulting VP,
Right Management Consultants (Maple-wood, NJ) conducted a skill-buildingworkshop. Participants learned that forsuccessful mentoring, one should remem-ber to: look inward (to gain self insightand feedback); look outward (to assessneeds, expectations and the realities of theorganization); look forward (to set devel-opment goals and to implement plans toachieve those goals).
After Burton concluded, attendeesbroke into workshop sessions organizedby career interests. Workshops allowedparticipants to gather in small, individu-alized settings with approximately onefacilitator to three or four participants.This format enabled professionals withsimilar career interests to meet and learnfrom each other.
CONNECTIONS Coup: $10,000in Scholarships
A special element of this CONNEC-TIONS evening was the offer of $10,000in scholarships to attend managementprograms made available to qualified can-didates who attended this event and ap-plied by the end of March for St. Joseph’sUniversity Executive Pharmaceutical Mar-keting MBA and Post-MBA Programs on-site and on-line.
“These workshops are a combinationof function and interest,” noted Courtade.“They are not just about finding a men-
tor, they are about building career goalsand sharing common objectives.”
“There’s something not entirely sci-entific about organizing an event to po-tentiate mentoring relationships,” addedAnne Camille Maher, Health Leaders(Hopkinton, MA), and HBA’s Co-Di-rector of Career Development. “Some-times the relationship is complete in asingle conversation and sometimes twopeople will form a professional friend-ship that will last for decades. My ownlong experience of being part of theHBA includes the full range . . . andmy career and my life are richer for allthose mentoring encounters.” �

The HBA is pleased to honor its own “StarVolunteer,” Stephanie G. Phillips, PhD, Co-Director of Programs, for her many years of ser-vice and outstanding contribution to the growthof the HBA.
“Stephanie truly personifies volunteerismand has been a role model to all HBA volun-teers,” said HBA President Nancy Larsen, Presi-dent, PROmedica Communications, Inc. “Shehas provided invaluable insights along withcountless hours through her role on the boardas Co-Director of Programs. . . .”
Copywriting was Phillips’ entrée into pharma-ceutical marketing. From the advertising side, shedeveloped full promotional campaigns for a hostof invaluable product categories. In the field ofmedical communications, she has contributed cre-atively to dozens of major pharmaceutical productlaunches and helped to reposition and rejuvenateolder products in virtually every medical specialty.
In 1987, Phillips saw the need for a medicalcommunications agency capable of interpretingthe serious science behind many of today’s phar-maceutical breakthroughs, so she establishedProject House, Inc. (Hackensack, NJ).
Today, Phillips maintains her vision to gen-erate scientifically sound and educationally valu-able programs. She is both a medical advertis-ing professional and a biomedical scientist,which allows her to supply creative direction andcritical medical expertise for ongoing projects.

he sun was dazzling and SixthAvenue never looked better. AsI left The New York Hilton af-
ter this year’s energizing “Woman of theYear” program, the words of our outgo-ing “Woman of the Year,” Sarah S.Harrison, Vice President, CustomerStrategy Integration, AstraZeneca Phar-maceuticals LP (Wilmington, DE), rangin my ears: “Celebrate the Present!”Stopping for an ice cream cone, I walkedsouth to the bus terminal, thinking howlucky I was to be a part of such an awe-some association, to have met and lis-tened to the words of such inspirationalmen and women and to have attendedsuch a well-organized event. Maybe itwas the sugar, but I knew that I had beenwitness to something powerful.
AHA!By “celebrating the present,” I knew
that this year’s WOTY was a great learn-ing opportunity. That’s how this featurewas born. Let me share the skills Ilearned from the women—and men—who lunch.
● Practice total quality manage-ment: One of my first thoughts, “Howdo they do it?”
Of course, I was thinking of theHBA’s Executive Director, Carol Davis-Grossman and her management com-pany The Charles Group.
As the WOTY event grows largereach year and each venue presents new
sets of challenges, the WOTY Commit-tee members and Carol’s team seek prac-tical ways to improve the experience forhonorees and attendees. And, when youthink the WOTY luncheon can’t getmuch better, it does. This year, theWOTY Committee achieved a majorgoal set for this event: on-timeperformance. (What did youdo with your extra ten min-utes?)
Does your organizationpractice some form of “TotalQuality Management”? Itmay be as simple as “debrief-ing” to assess the pros andcons of completing a recentassignment. Depending onyour organization, you mayalso recognize this is as striv-ing for continuous qualityimprovement or be familiar with sup-ply chain management, cell manufac-turing management or Six Sigma. ● Harness the diversity within yourorganization. HBA’s “Honorable Men-tor,” Guidant Corporation’s CEO RonaldDollens, emphasized that intellectualcapital is a major business asset—and itsvalue increases in organizations promot-ing diversity. In introducing this year’s“Woman of the Year,” Jack Ziegler, Presi-dent, GlaxoSmithKline ConsumerHealthcare (Philadelphia, PA), called pro-moting diversity “common sense.” Henoted that when an organization taps into
the diversity of its workforce, it also be-comes able to tap into the diversity of itscustomers.
A recent feature on the website ofthe Society of Human Resource Man-agement supports the business case fordiversity noting several “key factors

Of interest is a recent article in theHarvard Business Review, “Who’s Bring-ing You Hot Ideas (and How Are YouResponding?)” (February, 2003). Theauthors (Thomas H. Davenport,Laurence Prusak and H. James Wilson)formally studied people who bring man-agement ideas into organizations—ex-amining and identifying the skills ofthese idea practitioners, including howthey “scout” for new ideas, “packagethem” to be sold up and down the or-ganization, advocate for these ideas andimplement them. Additionally, ideapractitioners share personality traitssuch as optimism, a passion for ideasthemselves, self-confidence and an abil-ity to “span boundaries”—networkingand working across disciplines.
● Take responsibility. The respon-sibility for diversity within an organiza-tion does not rest solely withexecutives. Everyone in anorganization must be en-gaged in fostering their owntalents and skills and those oftheir colleagues, according toDollens. We each must takeresponsibility for making ourworkplaces the best placesthey can be.
Not only does this meanharnessing diversity, it meansbeing engaged. The GallupOrganization champions em-ployee engagement in itsmanagement work. In thebook Follow This Path,Gallup consultant authorsCurt Coffman and GabrielGonzalez-Molina write,“When engaged employeesutilize their natural talents,they provide an instant, and constant,competitive edge. They build a newvalue: emotionally driven connectionsbetween employees and customers.”
Gallup has systematically studied en-gagement. Organizations, utilizing theirtechniques for identifying and main-taining an engaged workforce, employGallup’s Q12 Survey to “measure dimen-
sions that leaders, managers and em-ployees can influence.”

You know that good feeling you getwhen a manager or client complimentsyour work with a “Looks good!” scribbledin response to a memo supporting a newidea? How ‘bout the time you were
stopped in the hall by a col-league who liked your solutionfor the file-sharing problem?Did a client send you choco-lates in appreciation of yourhard work in meeting a dead-line? The point is: We all liketo have our contributions no-ticed. Do you regularly ac-knowledge the work and com-mitment of your colleaguesand staff? (For that matter,have you acknowledged yourfriends and family on their suc-cesses and special moments?)
E-mail has its uses; some-times it is better to put pento paper and drop a note inacknowledgement. Manymanagement consultants ad-vise that businessmen andwomen write two notes a day

plified positive leadership—the leaderas both business person and humanitar-ian—as she “passed the torch” to Sohn.In urging us to “celebrate the present,”Harrison asked us to particularly cel-ebrate the accomplishments of all 2003honorees. She paid tribute to the HBAand its supportive leadership, “TheHBA helps us to be better people, buildour lives and helps us to grow.”
And, turning her attention to theworld at large, Harrison reminded usthat now, more than ever, we have to“lead from the heart.”
We were all brought back to anotherMay afternoon, when this same womanchallenged us to “leave the world a betterplace than you found it, whether by animproved environment, business growthor a rescued soul. We can all make a dif-ference. . . . Each One, Reach One.”
And that is what I learned at lunch. �

Another unique aspect of the WOTY event is therecognition of exceptional men in the industry viathe “Honorable Mentor” award. At the 2003WOTY, Ronald W. Dollens, President and CEO,Guidant Corporation (headquartered in Indianapo-lis, IN), received this honor.
Dollens was chosen because of his many yearsof advocacy for the advancement of women, ongo-ing mentoring and significant actions to supportwomen’s careers within Guidant and throughout theindustry, as well as the way he has worked to improvewomen’s health. Under his tenure, Guidant has alsoprovided significant support for the formation andgrowth of the San Francisco Bay Area (SFBA) chap-ter of the HBA.
Speaking at WOTY, Dollens offered thesewords of wisdom: “As you go forward, you have totake responsibility to make your workplace a betterplace to work. You have to champion your cause ev-ery day and work to make a difference.”
HBA’s 2003 WOTY Makes a Difference
One Voice on the Value of MedicinesAt the heart of this exceptional
woman’s moving speech was this mes-sage: It is time for industry to share onevoice and educate the public about thevalue of medicines and the positive rolethat the biopharmaceutical industryplays in disease prevention.
“Most of us in this room have dedi-cated our careers and our lives to the phar-maceutical and healthcare industry,” Sohnsaid. “Our healthcare products providemedical, social and economic value. Ourhealthcare products save lives, relievesymptoms, cure, and prevent disease.
“There has been much public debateabout the cost of these medicines. Ourindustry has been roundly criticized,and even our friends question our poli-cies and practices,” Sohn continued pas-sionately. “We, as an industry, have done
little to convey to a questioning publicthe value of medicines and that the realcost to society is the cost of disease.”
Sohn supported her assertions on thevalue of medicines with powerful data, dis-played via an impressive slide presentation,on the significant 10% increase in life ex-pectancy since the 1960s. She also offereddata on the high cost of disease versus thecomparatively low cost of medicines thatprevent and treat disease.
“The cost of heart disease is over $300billion per year in the US. Just looking atthis one disease area brings into stark re-lief the value and benefit brought by mod-ern medicine to millions of patients,” shesaid. “Cardiovascular medications such asbeta blockers and statins are cost effectiveand life saving for so many patients. Drugtherapy provides tremendous value by re-ducing death rates and by reducing hos-pital admissions, hospital stays, tests andprocedures as well as improving the

This year’s WOTY was a clear reflection of the HBA’s respected status as a national associationrun with consummate professionalism. “Everything ran on schedule,” said Rosemary Azzaro,Marketing Communications Consultant (Carlstadt, NJ) and member of the 2003 WOTY com-mittee. “In fact, we were even a bit ahead of schedule.”
According to other attendees, the “well oiled machinery” of WOTY made this year’s lun-cheon a pleasure to attend. “I didn’t have to look at my watch—everything just flowed so smoothlyand the speakers and the video clips were absolutely riveting,” noted one senior-level agencyexecutive. “The entire program was ‘on message.’ I feel inspired to make a difference,” notedanother attendee.
