When Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared to St. Juan Diego on December 12, 1531, she wore a black maternity band to

show that she was pregnant. Below the band at the center of her womb is a jasmine flower, an Aztec symbol of the divine,

to announce to the world that the child in her is divine.

A SYMBOL OF JOYThis has been a challenging year and the stream of bad news has likely taken a toll on our bodies and souls. During the first two weeks of Advent, priests wore violet vestments to symbolize the penitential nature of the season. For many of us, this Advent may feel more like Lent. Today, however, things change. Today, the darker color of violet is replaced with the lighter color of rose – a symbol of joy.

This third Sunday of Advent is called “Gaudete Sunday,” a Latin word meaning rejoice! In the first reading, Isaiah says, “I rejoice heartily in the Lord, in my God is the joy of my soul” (Isa 62:10a).

To encounter Jesus Christ is to discover joy. The scriptures demonstrate that Jesus can be encountered not only in good times but also most especially during difficult times. That is why

St. Paul reminds us in the second reading, “Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing. In all circumstances give thanks” (1 Thess 5:16).

Am I not here who am your Mother? Are you not under my shadow and protection? Am I not your fountain of life? Are you not in the folds of my mantle? In the crossing of my arms? Is there anything else you need?”

MY SPIRIT REJOICESGod wants nothing more than to enter our hearts during this holy season. Let us welcome him today and make straight his way by opening ourselves to all he offers us. When we encounter Jesus, we discover and experience true joy. Like Mary, may this personal encounter with Jesus lead us to say, “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God, my Savior” (Luke 1:46-47).

St. Teresa of Calcutta said, “Joy is a net of love by which we catch souls.” Stewardship is all about sharing God’s

gifts to help others on their journey. How can you be a steward of joy and cast a net of love today?

UN SÍMBOLO DE ALEGRÍAEste ha sido un año difícil y es probable que todas las malas noticias han afectado a nuestros cuerpos y almas. Durante las primeras dos semanas de Adviento, los sacerdotes usaron vestiduras moradas para simbolizar el elemento penitencial de la temporada. Para muchos de nosotros, este Adviento puede parecerse más a la Cuaresma. Hoy, sin embargo, las cosas cambian. Hoy el color morado se reemplaza con el color rosa - un símbolo de alegría.

PARA REFLEXIONAR• San Pablo nos dice que demos gracias en todas las

circunstancias. Dele gracias a Dios por una cosa por la que está muy agradecido. Conscientemente exprese su gratitud a las personas más cercanas.

• Como discípulos de Jesús, Dios nos llama “para anunciar la buena nueva a los pobres, a curar a los de corazón quebrantado” (Isa 61:1a). ¿Qué puede hacer esta semana para mejorar la vida de los necesitados?

• Cómo se siente cuando escucha las palabras de la Virgen de Guadalupe: “No te preocupes ni te agotes con penas. No temas ninguna enfermedad, problema, ansiedad o dolor. Estoy aquí, soy tu Madre. Estás bajo mi sombra y protección. ¿Qué no soy tu fuente de vida? ¿Qué no estás en los dobleces de mi manto? ¿En el cruce de mis brazos? ¿Necesitas algo más?”

MI ESPÍRITU SE ALEGRALo que Dios más quiere es entrar en nuestros corazones durante esta temporada. Démosle la bienvenida hoy y hagamos rectos sus senderos. Cuando nos encontramos con Jesús, descubrimos y vivimos la alegría verdadera. Al igual que María, que este encuentro personal con Jesús nos lleve a decir: “Mi alma glorifica al Señory mi espíritu se llena de júbilo en Dios, mi salvador “ (Lucas 1:46-47).
