the holidays which on occasion are quite attractive due to the special discounts extended for clients who book and pay during the Expo.

The holiday fair provides a relevant marketing platform for tented camps, home stays, guest houses and

hostels, conference tourism, cruise tourism, health clubs, travel agents, tour operators, airlines, car hire firms, and the whole range of eco-tourism and sports activities.

We would like to express our sincere thanks to all visitors who stopped by our stand, number 71. The turnout was fantastic. Exhibitors at the fair raised concerns about the low take up of hotel rooms and other tourism related services due to the just concluded elections.

The just concluded Holidays 2013 Tourism Fair which was held on 20th to 24th April 2013 was a showcase of Kenya’s tourism. The fair featured a host of local and regional hotels, travel agents and domestic airlines each displaying their signature brands in the most stylish, creative and outstanding manner in their elegantly designed booths. In recent years, there has been a growing numbers of participants from Tanzania and Zanzibar, which gives the event regional status.

Uniglobe Northline Travel was not left out; The Company participated for the first time in the tri-annual event and was well represented by Annette and Jacky, Our delightful holidays & Leisure Specialists.

The Sarit Centre’s first domestic Tourism Holidays Fair was held in 1984, and proved so popular with shoppers and generated such excellent new business for participants that they have been held annually without break ever since. The rationale for the event is that domestic tourists assist to fill the Kenyan Coastal Beach Resort and Wildlife Park Lodges, especially during the major Easter, August and Christmas holiday periods and low-season times when international tourists are few. The Holidays Fair attracts both local and international visitors, and is particularly helpful for those who are keen to learn more about the tour-ism industry in Kenya, it also draws visitors who

Last month a Chinese ivory smuggler

was sentenced in a Kenyan court. The smuggler

was in transit in Nairobi from the Democratic

Republic of Congo and was heading to Hong

Kong. He was caught with 439 pieces of ivory.

This smuggler got off lightly as he was fined less

than a dollar a piece.

According to the Capital News

website Kenya Wildlife Service spokesman Paul

Udoto said that Chinese smuggler Tian Yi was

arrested on Sunday while in transit in Nairobi

carrying 439 pieces of worked ivory. The ivory,

cut into finger-length sections and painted

brown, was “hidden in a suitcase and mixed

with tree bark to disguise it as traditional medi-

cine,” Udoto said in a statement.

Kenya needs stiffer penalties for ivory smuggling.

Tian – who was arrested as he

travelled from the Democratic Republic of

Congo to Hong Kong – was on Monday

fined $350 (Sh30,000) and has since been

set free, Udoto added. Experts suggest a

kilogramme of ivory has an estimated black

market value of some $2,500.

The elephant has been under

threat due to increased poaching. The

Kenyan government needs to enact

tougher laws on poaching and smuggling.

The sentencing limits for smuggling right

now treat it as a petty crime. Intense

lobbying by stakeholders should be done

to ensure that the laws are changed in

order to protect our wildlife, especially

vulnerable animals like elephants whose

tusks are priced highly in the black market.

According to AFP, the illegal ivory

trade is mostly fuelled by demand in Asia

and the Middle East, where elephant tusks

and rhinoceros horns are used to make

ornaments and in traditional medicine.

Trade in elephant ivory, with rare

exceptions, has been outlawed since 1989

after elephant populations in Africa dwin-

Africa is now home to an estimated

472,000 elephants, whose survival is threatened

by poaching as well as a rising human popula-

tion that is causing habitat loss. Experts suggest

a kilogramme of ivory has an estimated black

market value of some $2,500.

Adventure calls by Rayhab Gachango

The road,

It looks intimidating,

But don’t be fooled,

It loves the traveller,

Who leaves his home to travel it.

It calls,

The hills, mountains and rivers that it runs through,

Asking come and see,

New things and new experiences.

The road less travelled invites you to explore:

To learn its secret’s,

To share its wisdom,

Introduce one to new friends and cultures,

And memories to last a lifetime.

Come, it calls you,

Come let’s go on an adventure.

The road it calls,

Will you answer?

From the marketing desk.

Kenya's tourism industry may be a swift winner from the peaceful elections just concluded in the country.

Our county’s investment plans previously put on hold because of election-related uncertainty are now likely to be realized through a historic election under a new constitution.

This is a timely opportunity for the country to assert itself as a safe tourist destination after the March 4th general elections.

Peaceful elections are a manifestation of our strength in diversity and have re-affirmed the confidence our tourists have on Kenya as a tourist destination.
