Barnyard Collage

Common Core: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.K.1; RL.K.3; RL.K.6; RL.K.7; RL.K.9; RL.K.10

Suggested Reading Materials:

What’s in the Big Red Barn? by Marsha Elyn Wright ISBN: 0764703218

What You Will Need:

blank piece of paper

collage outline found on page 5

glue, scissors

collage materials (Examples: pieces of wool, string, ribbon, cotton balls, fabric scraps, tinfoil scraps, old magazines, construction paper, tissue paper, felt or foam, soybeans, corn, popcorn, uncooked noodles and rice, etc.

Directions:

1. The children will “color” their designs by gluing on the collage materials. Tip: Ripping the materials instead of cutting them will make it look more like a collage.

Lesson Extender:

1. Read the books that are suggested and have a class discussion. Examples of discussion questions:

What is the role of the illustrator? Who are the main characters?

What farm animals did you see? What did the illustrations tell you?

What were the similarities and differences of the two stories?

2. Play a card game to learn all about the farm! Professor Noggin’s Life on the Farm *Card Game*

Adapted from DLTK’S Inc.

All Around the Barn

Common Core: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.K.10; W.K.2

Suggested Reading Materials: Oink! Moo! How Do You Do? by Grace Maccarone ISBN-13: 9780590206556

What’s in the Big Red Barn? by Marsha Elyn Wright ISBN-13: 978-0764703218

What You Will Need: scissors

glue

crayons or markers

red paper and white paper (both 8 1/2 x 11)

copy of page 7 for each student

Directions: 1. Take the red cover sheet and a plain white sheet of paper (both 8½ x 11) and separately hamburger fold

each of them.

2. Lay the red cover sheet directly on top of the plain white sheet and cut out the roof shape for the barns.

3. Mark both folds 1 inch from the outer edges.

4. On the red cover page cut up from the top and bottom edge to the marked spot on both sides.

5. On the white folded sheet, start at one of the marked spots and cut out the fold between the two marks. Do not cut into the fold too deeply, just shave it off.

**For the younger student, mark an index card at the 1 inch distance on both sides. The student can then lay the index card on top of the folds to mark the proper distance.

6. Take the red cover sheet and burrito roll it. Place the burrito through the cut out in the white sheet and then open the burrito. Now fold the pages in half to form your barn book.

7. Use page 7 for ideas to complete the barn book.

All Around the Barn

Barn Book Ideas

1. Alphabet Activities — Create a page for each letter of the alphabet. Have students find items related to the farm that begin with each letter of the alphabet. Students can illustrate each page by drawing, coloring, writing or gluing pictures of each object.

2. Seasons — The farm is busy all year long. Talk about each of the seasons and what might be happening on the farm during that time of year. What crops are harvested in the summer? Which in the fall? When does planting occur? What is the weather like during each of the seasons? Have students dedicate a page for each season. They can color pictures, cut pictures out of a magazine or write about the different seasons.

3. Planting and Growth — Things grow on the farm all year long. Complete the Beanie Baby activity (found on IAITC’s website, agintheclassroom.org) to talk about germination. Have students keep a journal of what is happening with their Beanie Baby. Transplant the soybeans after germination and keep a log of the growth process.

4. Nutrition — Farmers work hard to feed their animals nutritious meals. They also take special care to make sure the food they produce for human consumption is safe, abundant and affordable. Have the students pick their favorite foods and describe how they come from the farm. What ingredients are used and where did they come from?

Soil &

Organic Matter

Soil is the basis for growing plants and animals. It needs to be protected from erosion, over farming, and the building of too many homes and shopping cen-ters. Organic matter is plant material that is broken down by composting or de-composing. Organic matter helps the soil absorb water. It provides a habitat for soil organisms and rich soil for plants.

Peat Moss

Soil Organisms

are present in healthy soil. These animals are important because they break down organic matter and provide spaces that help aerate the soil.

Blue shredded paper

Plants can be trees, shrubs, grass, or other crops. Plants provide food for humans and wildlife. Plants help prevent erosion, add beauty to our environment, and pro-duce oxygen for us to breathe.

Confetti trees

Corn is a basic crop that feeds humans and animals. Other products made from corn include plastic, fuel, sweeteners and corn oil. Fuel from corn is a renewable re-source.

Corn

Soybeans are found in many of the foods we eat such as candy, salad dressing, and mar-garine. Soybeans are also found in lotions, candles, fuel, and building materials.

Soybeans

Wheat is a grain found in the bread, rolls, cookies, pizza crust, and cereals we enjoy. Wheat

Animals such as cows, pigs and chickens provide us meat to eat. Confetti animals

Fertilizer is necessary to produce plants. Farmers use fertilizers carefully. Rock Salt

Pesticides are used to control weeds, insects and diseases. Farmers use integrated pest management practices and genetically engineered plants to reduce the use of pesticides.

Flour

Water is necessary for both plant and animal life. Farmers use water carefully since it is a non-renewable resource.

Blue confetti

Sunshine is important since all plants need it for the photosynthesis process that plants use to produce their food.

“Take Me Out to the Barnyard!”

Take Me Out to the Barnyard (Sung to: “Take Me Out to the Ball Game”)

Take me out to the barnyard

Take me out there right now

Show me the cows, pigs and horses too.

I hear an oink and a neigh and a moo

There are chickens laying their eggs

If they don’t lay, it’s a shame

Oh, it’s one, two, three eggs today,

And I’m glad I came!

Farm Sounds (Sung to: “Wheels on the Bus”)

The cow in the barn goes moo, moo, moo,

Moo, moo, moo. Moo, moo, moo,

Repeat

All around the farm.

The pig in the pen goes oink, oink, oink,…

The hens in the coop go cluck…

The lambs on the hill go baa…

The ducks on the pond go quack…

The geese on the farm go honk…

The turkeys in the pen go gobble…

Take a break &

sing!

What You Will Need:

Template found on page 18

Pink paint or construction paper

Paper bag

Markers

Scissors

Glue

Get familiar with your paper bag!

Lay your bag flat, and closed, as if it were new. The smooth side will be the BACK of your puppet. (It's important to distinguish front and back!) The other side has a flippy tab (This is the bottom of the bag when carrying your lunch). This flippy tab will be the HEAD. The remaining part below the tab will be the BODY.

Putting your puppet together:

1. Print the template, color in the pieces, as necessary, and cut them out.

2. Take a piece of pink construction paper and cut it to the size of the body and glue it onto the paper bag.

3. Cut another piece the size of the head and glue it onto the bag.

4. You can also cut a third piece the size of the back and glue it onto the bag.

5. Alternatively, you can paint your whole bag pink

6. Glue the eyes, snout, and ears onto the head.

7. Lift the side tab and put a spot of glue. Attach the arm. Do the same with the other arm.

8. Cut the tail out in a spiral (follow the template dotted lines).

9. Turn the bag over and glue the center of the spiral to the bag.
