Adventures in Round Brown Episode 5.2

Episode 5.2. I have always had a love affair with bright fabrics and rich designs. This would very easily explain my deep affection for African Wax Hollandaise ( Pronounced O-lan-daze)- Wax print fabrics that are created with a resist dye technique. Copper rollers spread hot wax on both side of a roll of fabric and then it is dipped into a dye bath and the fabric takes on the dye in places where the wax isn’t present. The proof of a quality wax print is that the print is clearly visible on both either side of the fabric.

Bright fabrics reside in my day to day from the way I design my surroundings, to the clothing that I wear, to the type of atmospheres where I like to spend my time. The brighter and more intricate the better. I also simply love African fabrics because it is a connection to a part of me that I know some but not enough about!

This episode is really all about that, the Art created through Hollandaise, and how to find your own fabrics to create one of a kind pieces and become your own walking piece of art. As Fashion is Art and Art is Fashion!

Yinka Shonibare

Born in England in 1962 and raised in Nigeria, Yinka Shonibarecurrently lives and works in London, where he hasgained international attention by exploring issues of race and class through a range ofmedia that includes sculpture, painting, photography, and installation art. Adopting a richly complex, unconventional approach, Shonibarelampoons the concept of achieving status through what might be called cultural authenticity. His works, simultaneously innocent and subversive, address a range of cultural and historicalissues and, in the process, blur the boundaries of design, ethnography, and contemporary art.(From Personal Website)

Yinka ShonibareProspero’s Monsters

In this installation Yinka Shonibare alludes to Shakespeare’s the Tempest . Shonibare’s work “often concerns itself with the history of colonization and its ensuing struggles. Here, the artist intimates that western democracy's current conquests may similarly invoke physical or psychological conflict.” (James Cohan Press Release). The Fabrics are beautiful and yet as Shonibarehas used them they suddenly become a gateway into more than just the clothes on your back.

The next page is just a few looks and designs that I enjoy. I am planning on having some pieces made in the fall. Truthfultl it doesn’t really matter what you have made, whether its an original design, or a remake, you are always going to be a stand out in the crowd. These fabrics are bold and beautiful and say enough just by themselves. These are wonderful alternatives to some of the horrible prints that you see created for plus-size women. Prints can be amazing, but they should be sleek and defined and speak beautiful volumes and not minor ones. Then you go and put fierceness and curves behind it all and you will def be a force to be reckoned with!

These are just a few pieces that I have about my place. They keep home a place that is vibrant and bold and yet warm and cozy. They also speak miles about who I am as a person and fashion and art as a reflection of self. The one with the African Tribe is a semi-Batik, The Orange, Gold and Green is an actual Hollandaise. The two others are from Ikea!

Plain and simple when it comes down to it, don’t be afraid of color. If you’re going to take a chance right now is a good time to do it. With all of the Batiks patterns about, and the Punk style makin moves as bodycon goes hard, why not take your go on the color merry go’round! This doesn’t mean you have to be head to toe in color. If you tend to stick to basic neutral colors, try a colorful pump, bag, or scarf and work your way up from there. If you’re not even willing to make that sacrifice then start with the face. Try a bright lip color, eye shadow, or nail polish, and of course there is my all time fave trick colored mascara
