Alt-J - DJ Set

Artist Alt-J are an alternative indie rock band from Leeds whose unusual sound originates from the fact that when they were recording their music in university halls they had to keep sound to a minimum and therefore couldn’t use bass guitars/drums. This has proved to be a blessing to them because it has given them an individual identity and set them apart from other similar artists.

Font/Lettering The text is written in a simple, easy to read, capital font which allows it to be noticeable from a distance and therefore allows the information to be taken in at a short glance and thus can help to create an audience for the event.

Image Alt-J’s logo symbol (∆) has been used to help their current fans to identify them and therefore keep them in the know as well as creating a link between them and their music. The image of the water which has been used has no strong link to the artist or their work and therefore connotes a sense of enigma because the viewer wants to know why that has been featured.

Genre The indie rock genre is quite a secretive/enigma causing genre and the logo of the band (∆) has been simply placed behind the image in an inverted layer in order to make it a subtle reference and therefore help to keep it as an intriguing image.

Target Audience The key purpose of a poster is to advertise the band and therefore this poster is attempting to create a new audience for the band and also make their current audience aware of the fact that they are playing a live event. It reaches their audience in the simple way of making them interested in the intrigue of why the water was chosen.

Coldplay - Mylo Xyloto Advert

Artist Coldplay are a rock band formed in 1996 and are seen as being quite alternative in their means of doing things because they don’t conform to the norms which would be expected of them/their genre. Therefore their poster is not what would usually be expected of them, however it has now become what is expected of Coldplay as an artist.

Font/Lettering The lettering is only an outline which makes it difficult to read and therefore connotes that the text isn’t the most important part of the advert. It does however mean that it isn’t interfering with the background image and therefore the audience can clearly see the graffiti which is the main focus point of the advert. All of the text is written in white which portrays it as being duller than the image

itself and therefore signifies that the things they will read are not as interesting as what you will see.

Image The image used is also the album cover and therefore creates the link between the image the viewer sees on the advert and what they might see in a shop to attract them to buy the actual CD. The graffiti shows them as being slightly alternative and not wanting to conform to the laws and rules of society as well as them wanting to express themselves.

Genre The rock genre is renowned for the artists wanting to express themselves in whatever way they can and Coldplay are doing this by the artwork portrayed on their advert. There is also a series of words which an audience can infer more about the artist from.

Target Audience Coldplay’s target audience is very widely spread and ranges from teens to an older audience because their music doesn’t have one specific group whom it is aimed at. Therefore their advert is also going to try and attract a wider audience, it does this by including a wide variety of colours which could appeal to male and female audiences both young and old.

Bastille - All This Bad Blood Advert

Artist Bastille are an Indie Rock/Pop band who originate from London. They are known to have an alternative music style which helps them to express themselves fully to their audience.

Font/Lettering Bastille’s signature font has been used in order to create a link between their music and the advert for their new album. This includes their logo of a ∆ which is proving to be quite popular in the genre of alternative music (Alt-J use it also), it also helps the audience to identify the music/albums of Bastille by creating a common link between their work.

Image The image used on the advert is used for their album called All This Bad Blood and therefore helps to make a link between their advertisement and the actual album. The image is taken from their music video for Things We Lost in the Fire, one of Bastille’s songs, and therefore signifies the connection between them and their work. The image itself is very plain and almost desaturated in the fact that it is basically all black, white and grey which connotes that the album is a what you see is what you get kind of album and therefore everything is laid out in front of them. The advert also includes icons to download the music from iTunes which connotes that they want the people who see this advert to actually buy the album.

Genre The Indie Rock/Pop genre appears to be very honest in their lyrics

because they tell most things up front and the way that they happened. This is relevant to the advert because the desaturated colours are able to show every single part of the photograph due to nature of a black and white photo showing the difference in contrast and tones.

Target Audience Bastille’s target audience spans a wide variety of ages and genders and therefore the advert has been made to be appealing for everyone, the use of black, white and grey makes the advert classy and allows it to attract all of its potential audiences.

The Cure - High Advert

Artist The Cure are an English Rock band who were formed in the Seventies and are still performing good music nearly 40 years after their beginning and many line-up changes.

Font/Lettering The name of the band is written in an edgy font which is commonly used for writing the band’s name over a variety of mediums. The title of the single is written in a typewriter like font which relates it to the time of its release. The fact that the font is easy to read means that the audience can see it in passing and still interpret the information in a quick way.

Image The image used on this advert goes against the stereotypes of this genre’s imagery because they don’t generally show images of the artist themselves, however The Cure were mainly sold on their appearance and therefore the inclusion of them is essential to sell them. The colours used in this photograph are quite cold which creates a feeling of unease and unsettlement around their music and therefore connotes that the audience should not become comfortable listening to it and therefore should expect the unexpected.

Genre The rock genre is renowned for being diverse and not what would be expected of them and The Cure are no different, this advert isn’t what would be expected of them and therefore that is the appeal.

Target Audience The Cure’s target audience spans a wide age range because they have their original backing and then they also have the people that they have attracted more recently by people thinking that The Cure are a cool, indie band to like - which in some ways they are. The record player is coming back into fashion and therefore the fact that the advert is for a record means that it will appeal to people who are trying to bring back that period.

Against the Current - Tour Advert

Artist Against the Current are an alternative pop rock band from New York who posted many covers on YouTube and have since begun releasing their own music after signing to the Fueled by Ramen label.

Font/Lettering The font used to write the artist’s name is the same font as is used on their album covers which creates a link between the artist and their albums so as the audience can easily identify them. The rest of the text is written in a capital letter, white large font which is easy for a viewer to easily see in passing as I know that this poster was displayed on streets to attract an audience for the gig.

Image The image on the advert is the image used on the cover of their most recent EP, which they played most of the songs from at the concert. The image then includes a picture of the actual album cover so as the audience can easily identify them from their work.

Genre The use of the colour orange on the advert is unconventional of this genre because it is seen as being quite dark and therefore the orange is challenging the stereotype. The appearance of this artist also doesn’t fit in with the stereotype of this genre because they appear to be much more poppy than rocky.

Target Audience The target audience of Against the Current is generally a young adult audience. They attract this audience on the advert by the fact that they are actually young and therefore the image of them on the advert is relatable and appealing to an audience of this type.
