Since taking over the business in February, owners Melanie Goldsmith and Phil Indovino have strived to produce quality food with an emphasis on fresh local ingredients and seafood. The couple is over- whelmed with the posi- tive response they have received from locals in relation to the changes they have made to the shop and the menu. With such a great response they have decided to introduce new types of seafood to the menu, increasing the choice for seafood lovers. There will now be grilled local oysters (nat- ural and Kilpatrick), prawns and lobster on the menu, rather than simply take away fish and chips. New burger options will include paninis and wraps, providing cus- tomers with a more gour- met-style selection. “We are serious about our seafood and fish and chips,” Melanie said. “The chefs and staff are dedicated people who love their food and a lot of experience is going into it. “Together we are working really hard to create a new and improved business.” The next six weeks, over the holiday period, are sure to see them rushed off their feet, but Melanie said they are “in it for the long haul”. The premises - a fish and chip shop since the 1960s - have undergone an extensive refurbish- ment with new equip- ment installed and new outdoor seating arrange- ments. “We are really proud to carry on this tradition…the communi- ty has such a connection to the place and it has a lot of character,” Melanie said. In fact, next year Melanie and Phil have plans to compile a book with photos and anecdot- al stories about the histo- ry of the shop through to the present day. In addition to provid- ing a takeaway service, fresh seafood is sold over the counter. Fish is sourced locally, mainly from Eden and Bermagui. There are three batters to choose from – a beer batter using dark ale, plain batter and Japanese-style Panko breadcrumbs – which are made daily. The oil is changed reg- ularly and the filter cleaned daily. “We use rice bran oil, which means the food is light and easy to digest, and doesn’t leave you with that ‘full’ feeling,” Melanie said. Tathra Seafoods will be open for lunch and dinner all year round. So drop in and sample for yourself what all the talk is about with the new look and new taste of Tathra Seafoods.
