    Introduction

    Mymostdear,mostprecious,mostkind,wish-fulfillingones,myfathersandmothers,brothersandsisters,studentsandfriends,everybody,

    Atthistimethereisabigchange.It’satime,averyimportanttime,ofdiscovery,adiscoveryofthetruthofsuffering.

    IheardthatduringtheFirstWorldWarthattherehappenedakindofinfluenza,adisease,epidemicdisease. So many millions, five million? Fifty millions people died, minimum. Fifty millions peopleminimum, died. That happened, butwe can’t say before, a long time ago, [what happened]. Thentherehappeneddifferentonesatdifferenttimes.Somenumberofyearsago,SARShappened,butIthink it didn’t spreadmuch.OurDharma center, ABC in Singapore, invited themonkswho do theMostSecretHayagrivapujainSeraJey,ourcollege.Theyinvitedthosemonkswhoarespecializedindoingthepuja,andthenalsoLowerTantraCollege[monks].Theydid,Ithink,TsogKong,MostSecretHayagrivaTsogOffering,theextensiveone.Thentheydid,Ithink,awrathfulfirepujaandthenIdon’tknowwhatelse,butmanyothers.RightafterthattheSARSstopped.ThepujawasdonetostoptheSARS. It was sponsored by our center, FPMT center, ABC. So that happened. So this time, thishappened—coronavirus.

    Whenyou lookat the life…Well, it started fromChina, fromthisparticularcity,Wuhan.Thennowdiseasehappened inmanyothercountries,Spain, Italy,Korea, Japan. In somecountries, it ismuchmore.AswellasinAmerica.Yousee,now,peoplegetveryscared;ofcourse,non-Buddhists,yes,butevenusordinaryBuddhistpeople.ButwhatIthoughtstrangeis[thatyouarestillscared]whenyouhaveheardBuddhadharma,thefourseals,theview,Buddhistview.

    CHHÖ THAM CHÄ TONG ZHING DAG ME PA] Allexistentsareemptyandno-self.

    “Theexistentsareemptyandno-self.”Thosewhohavestudied,youunderstand[this].

    Itistheverybeginningadvice,teaching,forhowtocontrolthemind.Therootofallthesuffering,theoceansofsufferingofsamsaracomefromthethreepoisonousminds,attachment,anger,ignorance.Then,ofcourse,ofcoursethen,theroot,theotherone,isself-cherishingthought,selfishmind.Itisfromwhereall themisfortune, all theobstacles, everything, comes topracticeDharma, toachieveenlightenment,tobenefitothersentientbeingsandthentoobtainevenyourownhappiness.

    Itissaid,asmanypeoplehaveheardBodhisattvacharyavatara,asyouknowinBodhicharyavatara[itsays]:

    DAG ZHÄN JE WA MA JÄ NA Ifyoudon’texchangeyourselfandothers,

    DZOG SANG NYI DU MIN GYUR WÄ Buddhahoodcannotbeachieved.

    KHOR WA NA YANG DE WA ME Evenwhileyouareinsamsara,thereisnohappiness.

    JIG TEN PHA RÖL PHAR ZHOG GI Leaveasideobtainingthehappinessoffuturelives,

    TSHE DII DÖN YANG DRUB MI GYUR Eventhehappinessofthislifecannotbeobtained.1

    Oh,that.ThatiswhatonthebasisoftheBuddha’steachings,thenShantidevaadvised,saidthis.But,ofcourse,thatisyourownexperience.Youcanexpandthatfromyourownexperience.“Exchangingoneselfforothers, ifthat isnotdone,enlightenmentcannotbeachieved.”“Buddhahoodcannotbeachieved.”“Eveninsamsara,”“Whileyouareinsamsara,thereisnohappiness.”“Leaveasidefuture

    lives, obtaining the happiness of future lives, even the happiness of this life cannot be obtained.”That’s very clear. People,many business people,many people, somany,wow,wow, somany, thehappinessesof this life theywanttoaccomplish, theywanttoachieve,butsomuchproblems.Youhavetofacesoooooomanyproblems,bah,bah,bah,thewholelife.Wheredoesitcomefrom?Itallcomesfromtheself-cherishingthought.Itisveryclear.

    Then,cherishingothers,ultimategoodheart,bodhichitta,ofcourse.Butevenifyoudon'thavethat…But, of course, that, then, is the root. It iswhatmakespossible the rootof thepath.Whatmakespossible to achieve enlightenment, to cease all the obscurations, all themistakes ofmind, and tocompletealltherealizationsisthat.Then, ifyouhavebodhichitta,thenyoucancausehappinesstonumberless sentientbeingsup toenlightenment.This life, future life,up toenlightenment,all thatcanbesuccessful.Evenifyouhaveageneralgoodheart,evenifyoudon'thaveultimatebodhichittabutyouhaveagoodheart,youcancausesomanysentientbeings,insectsandpeople,somany,youcancausehappiness.Youcanhelp;itisunbelievable.Somuchofyoursuccesscanbeachieved.Okay?Likethat.

    Then, the other one is, of course, dagdzin marigpa, the ignorance holding the I as truly existent,existingfromitsownside,existingbyitself,or,byusingthelanguagethateverydayweuse,therealI.Inreality, frombeginninglessrebirthsthe Iexists inmerename, inmerename.So it ismost,most,mostunbelievablysubtlewhatitis.It’slike…ComparedtotherealIthatappearsandwebelievefrombeginninglessrebirths,comparingtothat,itislike—itisnotthattheIdoesn’texist,butitislikethat!Butitislikethat.

    So, you have to understand. I’m just introducing this to ordinary people like me who don'tunderstand.Sowearediscussingit.

    Okay.Sowehavetounderstand.NotGodcreatedthat,notBuddhacreatedthat,ourmindcreatedthat,therootofsamsara,therootoftheoceansofsamsaricsuffering.Thesufferingsyoudon'tknowthatitissufferingandthesufferingsyouknowyoudon'tlike,allthatcamefromthat.Soourmindhasbeen creating what is just a superstition, a wrong belief. So it is very strange. With that wrongconcept,thewrongconceptofI,thenthatistheroot.Fromthat,thenyoucreate—I’mjusttalkinginashort way—the oceans of samsaric suffering, the oceans of hell suffering, oceans of hungry ghostsufferings, oceans of animal suffering, oceans of human being, sura and asura, intermediate statebeing.Bah,bah,bah.Lamakhyen,lamakhyen.Bah,bah,bah.Soitisreally,really,really,reallyfunny.It is really, really, really funny. Funny, if you think, if youdiscover. Ifwedon't analyze, ifwedon'tanalyze,don'tcheck,likescience.Nowthisisinnerscience,notouterbutinnerscience,checkingupby themind, realizing that themostdangerous,most harmfulwrong concept is the creatorof theoceans of samsaric sufferings. Bah, bah, bah. The suffering is the suffering of pain and all thepleasures, samsaric pleasures, are in the nature of the suffering of change. That’s why it cannotcontinue, itcannotdevelop, thatpleasure,whereasDharmahappiness,happinesswithbodhichitta,renunciation,emptiness, justwithout talkingevenabout tantra, thosehappiness theycandevelop.

    Whenyouachieveenlightenment,youhavecompletedthehappinessofDharma.Youcan’tdothatwiththesamsarichappiness.Why?Becausesamsarichappinessisthenatureofsuffering.Becauseofthat. It’s like on a sword or on a knife there is honey, so you lick it and then you experience thesweetness, yes, but then it cuts your tongue. Or then the flies, butterflies [moths], different flies,whenthereisthelightofafire,thentheytrytogetinsideit.Eventhoughitishot,theycanfeelitishot,butstilltheytrytogoinside.Thelightoftheflame,theytrytoreallygoin.Sotheyhaveatotallywronghallucinatedappearanceofsomethingmostamazing,somethingmostbeautiful,somethingtoreallygetinside,thenyouwillbeblissedoutorsomething.I’mjustmakingitintowords.That’swhythosedifferentflies,bigandsmall,trytogetinside.Theytrytogetinside,butoncetheygetinside,theygetburned.Theydon'tknow;itistotallyopposite,completelyopposite,whatappearstothemandwhatitis.Solikethat,orthefliesgetinsidethecandlewax,thecandle,thentheyfalldown.Theydropinthecandlewax,oranoillamp,orthingslikethat.Bah,bah,bah.Likethat,theycouldnotfly.Eveniftheydidn’tburnbuttheydroppedinthewax.Ithappenslikethat.

    Peoplewhoarefishing,theyhaveaworm,afishingwormtied[onahook].Thewirewentthroughthebody, thenyouput that in thewater. Itmovesof course, then from far the fish can see there isawormthere.(Rinpocheshowshowitwiggles)Theywanttotrytoeatthat.Withsomuchdesire,theyruntoeatit.Butthenwhathappens?Itwasn’tlikethat.Itistotallyagainstwhattheywish.Theygetcaught.Theirmouthgetscaughtbythewire,thehook.Bah,bah,bah.Then,lamakhyen,whatpain.Theygetcaught.Thenwithaknifeyoucleanoutsidethehairs [scales], thenyoucut it inhalf.Bah,bah,bah.Lamakhyen,lamakhyen,whatsuffering,whatsuffering.

    Thepleasuresofsamsara,howtheyarethenatureofsuffering,oh,islikethis.Itistotallydeceiving,bah,bah,bah, likethisexampleIgave, justafewexamples. It isverygoodtousetheexamplesformeditation[ofhowtheyare]deceiving.Bah,bah,bah,bah,bah,bah.

    Then from there, so much attachment. [But] nothing is definite, always it changes. Because thediseasehappened,thegovernmentchanges,soallthebusinesspeoplechanges,businessgoesdown.Somanychanges,nothingisdefinite.

    Then how much we enjoy them, we never get satisfaction, as Lama Tsongkhapa said in theFoundationofAllGoodQualities.Bah,bah,bah.Those twoare themainsufferings.Bah,bah,bah.Lamakhyen,lamakhyen.Sothensomethingwhichiswrong,thenyoucontinue,continue,continue.Then after some time, it gets exploded, then huge suffering. You don't realize that the nature ofsamsaraissuffering,thatwhichissuffering,allthesethings.

    WhatamIsaying?

    Then,thethird[suffering]isthepervasivecompoundingsuffering,kyabpadujekyidugngal.Thetwoother sufferings, the sufferingofpainand sufferingof change, gyurwaidugngal,dugngalgyi dugngalandgyurwaidugngal,camefromthethird,pervasivecompoundingsuffering,kyabpadujekyidug ngal. These aggregates are completely under the control of delusion and karma, so they are

    pervadedbysuffering,asHisHolinessalwaysexplains.Thentheseaggregatesarethecontaminatedseedofdelusionandkarma.Fromthatseed,delusionarisesagainandthesufferingofthislifeandthesuffering of future lives arises from that again—from these aggregates, these contaminatedaggregates. Therefore, in the life the most, the most, the most, the most important meditationinvolvesthemostimportantpracticethelifetolivein,thelifetofollow,whereyourmindshouldlive,isbodhichittaandemptiness.These twoare the foundationofall tantra, thequickpath toachieveenlightenment.

    Okay,thatisenough.Thatisenoughjustforanintroduction.

    Meditation on Death is the Foundation

    As Imentionedbefore, this is the foundation, almost the first teaching, instruction,or advice, [theone] about impermanence-death, chiwamitagpa. Not only is death definite… Imean except for ahallucinatedperson,butmostpeople,ofcourse,[know],“Iwilldie,”butalwaysthereisthethought,“Iwillliveforaverylongtime.”Evenifyourfamilydies,yourbrotherdiesbycancer,bythat,bythis;evenifaroundyoupeopleyouknowaredyinggradually,orsometimestogether,butyouneverthinkofyourdeath,thatyouaregoingtodie.Nobodysays,“Iwon’tdieforever,”intheworld.Idon'tthink[anyonesaysthat]exceptifthemindishallucinated,over-hallucinated.

    That,deathisdefinite,andwhenthedeathwilloccurisindefinite.Death—todaythebodyislikethisbuttomorrowyoucannotsay.Itcanbeonthefirewoodburningthebodybythistimetomorrow;soyoucan’treallysay.Theactualtimeofdeathisindefinite.Thatistheverybasic,verybeginning,verybasic teaching. We have been hearing for however long you have been hearing teachings of theBuddha, for however many years you have been a Buddhist, that the actual time of death… TheBuddhasaid,intheformof,heappearedintheordinaryaspectofaguru,thengaveyoutheteaching,“Theactualtimeofdeathisindefinite.”Youhearditsomuch,youhearditsomuch,butitwasnotlikethis,withthisdiseasehappening,peopledying,sotherewasnotthisfear.Therewasnotthisusefulfear.Itisvery,verystrange.WhattheBuddhasaid…Allthethree-timebuddhas,thenumberlesspast,present,andfuturebuddhasofthetendirections,manifestedintheguru, intheordinaryaspectoftheguru,sothatyoucanseethem,soyouseetheholypersonandreceiveteachings,allthat—learnthe alphabet and the commentaries, the lungs, and you can receive the pratimoksha, bodhisattva,tantravows,initiationsandcommentaries,lungs,instructions,commentariesontantra—sothatyoucanmakeyourmindsoclosetoenlightenment,bah,bah,bah,yes, ifyoucorrectlypractice.All thetimeyouarebeing taught, it is taught, it is said in the teachings,but that,kindof—formeand forcommongeneralpeoplelikeme—thatisleftout.Itiskindoflikeitisnottakenseriously;thatislikesortofnormal talk.But then thediseasehappened,what thecountry talksabout, thenyouare soscared,soscared. Ifthedoctorsays,“Youhavecancer,”oh,youaresoscared,terriblyscared.Bah,bah, bah. But when the Buddha, when the guru, always gives you this teaching, the basic

    introduction,thebasicmeditation[thatdeathisdefiniteandthetimeofdeathisuncertain]tocontrolyourmind—ignorance,anger,attachment,allthedelusions—andtocontrolthenegativekarma,andtoallowalltherealizationsofthegraduatedpathofalowercapablebeing,thegraduatedpathofamiddlecapablebeing,andthegraduatedpathofahighercapablebeing,allthatuptoenlightenment,toallow inyourmind,but themeditationwhichdoesthat,which isvery important,but that isnottakenasimportant,asserious.Soitisverystrange.Ifthedoctorsaysit,thenitbecomessoserious.Ifthedoctorsaysit.Butiftheguru,theBuddha,[saysit],itisnottakenupwitheffort;onlyifthedoctorsaysit,then,iftheworldorthecountrysaysit.Itisverykindofveryinteresting.Itiskindofsilly.Silly.

    Now, ifyouhadtakenwhat theBuddhasaid,what thegurusays, soseriously,oh, thenyouwouldpracticeDharmacontinuously.Youwouldneverwaste [your time]dayandnight.Youwouldneverwasteevenonehour innegativekarma, increatingnegativekarma,thecauseofthe lowerrealms.Youwouldn’t spendyour life in that,notevenonehour.YouwouldpracticeDharmacontinuously,thenyouwouldachieverealizationsyearbyyear,forexample.Likethatwouldhappenifyouweretotake as seriouswhat is said in the lamrim,what is said in the teachings, in the base of the tantrateachings,thesutrateachings.

    Lama Tsongkhapa said… It is difficult to remember the words. Themeaning is the perfect humanrebirth,which isdifficulttofindagain,thenimpermanence-death,andkarma, ifyoudorealizethis,theneverythinghappens.Thenallthefollowingrealizationshappen.Wedidn’tget…[People]likeme,wedidn’tgetdonethis.Thisverybasicthingisleftout.Wedidn’ttakeitseriously,sothentherestoftherealizationsuptoenlightenmentdon'thappen.Thatmeansifyoudiscover[thefirstteachings],ifyourealizethem,thenalltherestoftherealizationshappenwithoutdifficulty.Theyhappeneasily.Itsaysthatinthelamrim,Ithink.

    [video00.36]Okay.Now,nowforyourselftonotgetthediseaseandthedisease,ifyoudidgetit,torecoverfromthat,thenVajraArmoristhemantratoreciteeveryday.Onemalayoucanrecite;thatiscommon.Itisunbelievablyimportant,thatone.SoI’mgoingtodothat.

    Manypeoplebecomegreathealersbyrecitingthismantra.Eveniftheydon'tknowthebasiclamrimorDharma,theydon'tknowmuch,butmanybecomegreathealers.Therearemany.Theyareabletohealmanypeople,somanypeople.Ofcourse,thenyouhavefaith inthemantra,thepowerofthemantra.

    I’mgoingtodothelungofthis.IreceivedthelungofthismantrafromKyabjeTrulshikRinpoche,HisHolinesstheDalaiLama’sguru.HetookinitiationfromRinpoche.[KyabjeTrulshikRinpoche]isvery,veryqualified,aperfectlyqualifiedguruofsutraandtantraintheworld,inthisworld.IreceivedthislungfromRinpocheinKathmandu.I’mgoingtoreadthis.

    “I go for refuge to Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha until I achieve enlightenment.” And, “Due to themeritsofhavingdonecharityandsoforth,practicedthesixparamitas,listenedtoteachings,”bythethree-timemerits collected byme, three-timemerits, past, present, and future, three-timemeritscollectedbynumberlesssentientbeings,andthethree-timemeritscollectedbynumberlessbuddhas,“may I achieve the total cessation ofmistakes ofmind and the completion of all the realizations,buddhahood,inordertobenefitall…”“Benefit”meanstofreefromtheoceansofsamsaricsufferingsthe numberless hell beings, numberless hungry ghosts, numberless animals, numberless humanbeings,numberlesssurabeings,numberlessasurabeings,numberless intermediatestatebeings, tofree them from the oceans of samsaric sufferings and bring them to enlightenment. Benefit forsentient beings means that. “Therefore, I’m going to listen to the lung.” You can think like that.However, at least [listen] to help the sentient beings. You are just one; sentient beings arenumberless.Soitismuchmorewisetocausenumberlesssentientbeings[tobefreefromsuffering].Just don't think only of yourself, because it is mentioned in the Buddha’s teachings and you candiscoverthatallthesufferingscamefromwhere?TheycamefromtheI,cherishingtheI.Then,allthehappiness from beginningless rebirths, now, and future happiness, including enlightenment,everything,camefromothers,cherishingothers.“Therefore,I’mgoingtolistentotheteaching,thelung,forthebenefitofothers.”
