For Australian schools to maintain a strong presence in key markets, regular visits to maintain relationships with education agents, alumni, current and past parents and local schools are important. Australian school specific events are an important contributor to building and maintaining an overall profile for the Australian school sector in key markets. With a strong Australian schools’ profile in these markets, individual schools may find their individual marketing efforts to be more effective.

AEAS events bring together Australian schools, quality education agents and international families considering applying to Australian schools.

Australian Schools Exhibitions

✔ Contribute to branding an Australian school education as desirable and first class.

✔ Build the profile of Australia as a high quality, safe destination that leads to successful student outcomes at school, university and in careers

✔ Provide an opportunity to meet directly with prospective students and parents to discuss your school’s key selling points.

✔ Capitalise on Australian schools’ largest market (China) as well as building a profile in other key markets and smaller and emerging markets.

✔ Provide the opportunity for school representatives to attend market briefings with a specific focus on Australian schools presented by Austrade representatives.

✔ Enable schools to utilise the in-market knowledge presented by Austrade and also held by co-organising education agents (where relevant) and AEAS China staff.

Education Agent Workshops

✔ Provide an opportunity for business to business one-on-one meetings between selected education agents from across China, Indonesia, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.

✔ School representatives and agents share information on the market for school age students to study in Australian schools.

✔ Provide education agents with current information on the contemporary Australian education system and the quality and benefits of an international education in an Australian school.

✔ The workshops are generally held at five star venues and are fully catered.

✔ School representatives may be invited to present to education agents on behalf of participating schools on key topics of interest.

MAY 2019 – CAMBODIA, TAIWAN, JAPAN, CHINA

Cambodia is a relatively new market for school students and is now the eighth largest source market in Asia for school sector students. Over the past five years the number of visas granted and enrolments in Australian schools has grown significantly. In the past two years visas granted grew by nearly 25% and at July 2018 there were 459 enrolments. There is growing interest in an Australian school education. This event will be supported by IDP Education and their Australian Centre for Education (ACE).

Taiwan is the ninth largest source market in Asia for school students. Agents attending the Education Agent Workshop held in Taipei in 2018 indicated there has been increasing interest in Australia as a destination, in preference to other destinations such as USA.

Japan is the fifth largest source market in Asia for school sector students. The Japanese government under the leadership of Prime Minister Abe increased the focus on students needing to develop a global outlook through English language development and

studying abroad opportunities. English skills with real world applicability, cross cultural understanding and diverse mindset, and global leadership is the goal. The intention is to better position Japan for the global economy now and in the future.

Chengdu and Shenzhen, China are tier one cities both offering very good potential for school student recruitment. Shenzhen is listed fifth on the top twenty list of school sector visa cities and Chengdu is ninth. Source: Analysis of Offshore of Student Visa Applications by citizens of the PRC, 2017, Austrade.

JUNE 2019 – HONG KONG, SRI LANKA, MALAYSIA

Hong Kong is a traditional and important source market for Australian schools enrolling international students. These international students include 500 student visas, business migration and citizens and permanent residents residing in Hong Kong. Many people from Hong Kong have studied in Australian schools and alumni and their parents provide a strong source of referral. Maintaining alumni connections is critical for future enrolments, as it is for all key markets.

Sri Lanka has a population of 21 million and is developing quickly. Sri Lanka is currently a solid higher education and VET market with 11,600 students in total enrolled at July 2018 across all sectors. The school sector is a small market with 41 students enrolled at July 2018. This is an emerging market with potential for a small cohort of school sector students. As the country develops the number of families able to afford an overseas education will grow. Australia

is the preferred education destination for Sri Lankan students. A two day exploratory and familiarisation event is being planned for 25 and 26 June 2019. This will include an Austrade country and market briefing, education agent seminar and meetings, and school to school meetings.

Malaysia is the seventh largest source market in Asia for school sector programs. The Malaysian market has been a traditional market for Australian schools for many years. It has been characterised by broad and influential alumni networks and strong recognition of the quality of an Australian education. Our main competitors in this market are Singapore, UK, USA and local international schools. To maintain a place in this market, Australian schools must continue to promote the quality of our education through events that create and maintain an Australian brand. The brand must be able to be recalled by prospective parents when considering competing school options for their children. Australian schools are also encouraged to visit Malaysia another time during the year, perhaps while travelling to or from other countries.

AUGUST 2019 – INDONESIA

Indonesia is a market with significant potential for Australian schools. According to an ICEF Monitor report from June 2017, “outbound mobility from Indonesia has grown by 35% over the past decade. Nearly 42,000 Indonesians were enrolled in higher education abroad in 2016. The leading destinations for Indonesians are Australia, the US, and Malaysia.” The Indonesian population is currently more than 263 million people and has the world’s fourth largest population. The population is young. The median age is just over 28 and nearly half of all Indonesians are under the age of 30. Indonesia has a growing middle class. The country’s affluent consumer classes are expected to double in size – from 74 million to 141 million – by 2020. The young and growing affluent Indonesian population offers significant opportunities to Australian schools interested in promotion to Indonesian students and families.

SEPTEMBER 2019 – VIETNAM AND THAILAND

Schools participating in the Hanoi, HCMC and Bangkok Exhibitions can invite their preferred agent to work on their booth on the event day. The agent will then support the school by following up interested students.

Vietnam is the second largest source market in Asia for school sector students. More than 60 per cent of the population of 90 million are below 30 years. This, along with an education system that is continuing to develop, suggests there will continue to be many families that may consider an international education for their child. The economic outlook and population growth continues to suggest Vietnam is an important current and future market for Australian schools.

Thailand is the sixth largest source market in Asia for school sector students. Australian schools are the third highest destination at 22 per cent for school age students

after New Zealand (36 per cent) and UK (24 per cent). New Zealand and UK have strong brand presence in Thailand. It is important that Australian schools continue to build brand presence through events such as these.
