AED (Alpha Epsilon Delta) is the National Health Pre-professional Honor Society, and the Society at Wofford welcomes ALL students engaged in the pursuit of any professional healthcare career. AED offers opportunities for intellectual and professional development, provides a forum for students with common interests, and extends a program of service to benefit the college community. Students interested in becoming members should sign the list available in the Biology Department Office on the second floor of Milliken. There will be an organizational meeting of those interested early in September. If you have questions, please contact Joseph McAbee ([email protected] ) or Dr. Shiflet ([email protected] )

• Magic Number: 3.3. You should be shooting for nothing below a ‘B’; B+ in your sciences!• For those who do well this semester, should be the opportunity to take BOTH bio AND chem in spring. • Requirement for MCAT: • - Min 3 bio courses

– Bio212, 214– Physiology

• - 4 chem • - 2 physics • Biochemistry, either in chem or bio dept• 1 Psychology/sociology [110?]• Summer school may be required to fit all of that in before MCAT, end of Jr year.

– Consider chem or physics this coming summer.• Although not required for SC med schools, most require 2 semesters of college-level math; we suggest 1 calc, 1

stats. Stats early on.• Other things that strengthen your application: • - Clinical experience

– Interim– Document; “clinical evaluation forms” on web site

• - “Leadership” • - Faculty evaluations

• Get to know faculty by lab assisting; doing research; some sort of thesis.• Fluency in Spanish • “Set yourself apart”:

• Medical humanities• Computational science• Study abroad

accepted. – Qualified = 3.3 GPA, 25 MCAT [lower for osteopathic]

• Average ACCEPTED from Wofford last year: – 3.71 science & math– 3.65 overall (range 3.24 – 4.0)– 29 MCAT (range 24 – 38)

• Most go to home state schools. We currently have students going to MUSC, USC, ECU, Emory, Cornell, and Wake Forest. This year we have 4 going to osteopathic schools, including 3 at VCOM
