JANUARY 2019
Principal’s Message - Nancy Illsley
Happy New Year! Hopefully when you pick this up to
read, you’ll have had a wonderful, joyous time with your
family and friends. ☺ As the weather gets colder, we
ask you to dress your child(ren) in layers during the win-
ter months. Students will be going outside in weather
up to –20ºC wind chill! BRRR! Hats, mitts, snow pants,
warm jackets, and boots are a must! Extra mitts and
gloves would be beneficial as it is often hard to dry wet
mittens between recess and lunch. Labelling your
child’s items is also essential. Replacing lost clothing
can become quite costly. When you periodically come
into the school, glance into the lost and found. You nev-
er know what you’ll find in there! Here’s to a month of
teaching and learning—and very few snow days!
* SCHOOL CLOSURES *
There are times when school is cancelled due to poor
weather or for other reasons such as power outages,
etc., and it is important for fami-
lies to have back-up plans.
In cases of bad weather, the de-
cision to cancel school is made
by School Board officials after
consulting with the local weather
office regarding forecasts and with the provincial De-
partment of Transportation regarding road conditions.
Closures may occur first thing in the morning or part-
way through the school day and are announced by the
Centre through the messaging system.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR
The fall Scholastic Book Fair was very successful this year, with total sales of $4100 which resulted in just over $2000 in books for the grades 3-5 classroom li-braries, resource classrooms and the school library. Thank you to the parent volunteers who donated their time to helping run the book fair. I’d also like to thank the students, staff, parents and AEES community for the wonderful and wholehearted support of this fund-raiser for our school.
Congratulations to Wesley Connell 3 Handley for win-ning the Book Fair Door Prize, which was $25 in books for himself and $25 in books for his classroom.

CHRISTMAS SHOPPING PARTY
A GREAT BIG THANK YOU to all who donated to the shopping party and to the great volunteers, who helped sort, set up, pack, stack, wrap and deliver for the 2018 Christmas Shopping Party.
A special thank you to the AEES custodians and staff for their help as it was appreciated and we could not have done it without you! Total money raised was around $2800!!! See you on Jan. 7th at 6:30 pm in the school library for our next meeting.
Sincerely, Home and School Committee

UPDATING PHONE TREE/SCHOOL INFORMATION
Just a reminder, if you have new information such as a
change of phone number, address, or emergency con-
tact information, please let the office know. We need
to have up-to-date information on our phone trees as
we try to prepare for possible unexpected school clo-
sures and flu season!
Late Arrivals
Late arrivals have again become increas-
ingly troubling this year. 40% of our stu-
dents have had 1-6 late arrivals with an
additional 8% having more than 7. As either literacy or
math is often taught first thing in the morning, 48% of
students are missing instructional time, and this is not
counting the disruption to the class with a late arrival.
We understand there are some good reasons to be late,
like medical appointments, but often we are hearing
from children it is because they slept in or families just
didn’t want to get up on time. The following practices
are in place to monitor late arrivals:
The back door and the inside front doors are
locked starting at 8:20am.
Students are required to stop into the office and
get a late card to present to their teacher. Stu-
dents will not be allowed to go to class without a
late card (meaning they have signed in at the
office.)
Parents/Guardians of students who are late will
receive messages from the Alert System to en-
sure they know their child has been late.
Thanks for working with us to ensure students have the
best schooling possible.
