1. Asset Location and Due Diligence –Locating Yachts So, you are looking for a Yacht? For the uninitiated it can be a very difficult process, but much can be done to hunt down a Yacht, knowing its history and its possible whereabouts. Hull Number -‐ All vessels have a hull number. Usually this number is a number given in sequence for a given line of vessels that are manufactured. Bob’s Yachts may manufacture a line of 23-‐meter sport hulls and the model is called a Mediterranean Flyer. The first in the series will carry the designation as, Mediterranean Flyer, Hull 001, Built by Bob’s Yachts. The HIN (Hull Identification Number) in the US comes in three sections Manufacturer Code | Hull Serial Number | Date of Certification, this can be usually found on the starboard side of the transom. International hull identification serial numbers appear in the international ISO format with fourteen characters. The prefix is the country code followed by the MIC (Manufacturers code) – composed of three letters. This is followed by the builders model name and serial number followed by the month and year of production or model year.
This is set out in the following example: ES –BBB7B0001L013
ES (country code) Spain – BBB (Manufacturers Code, name), 7B (Model)0001 (serial no.) L (month of build -‐ July), 013 (year of manufacture). This hull identification number will appear on the transom permanently built on or etched into the hull and occasionally on a permanently affixed plate on the starboard side of the transom. One may find a second or third place in the Yacht where the number may be stamped or etched and hidden to deal with yacht thieves.
AIS-‐ The Automatic Identification System is an automatic tracking system used on ships and by vessel traffic services (VTS) for identifying and locating vessels by electronically exchanging data with other nearby ships, AIS base stations, and satellites. AIS Type is a number that corresponds to the type of vessel. For example, 60 might be a passenger ship or 40 a cigarette boat. When searching for a yacht it is best to have a few guesses as to the type of AIS number it may be using. For more information on AIS numbers please visit the following website: http://www.shipais.com/doc/Pifaq/1/22/ IMO (International Maritime Organization) Number is a ship number consisting of the three letters "IMO" followed by a unique seven-‐digit number assigned to sea-‐going merchant ships under the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS). The IMO adopted this scheme of numbering to “enhance maritime safety, and pollution prevention and to facilitate the prevention of maritime fraud". It does this by assigning and IMO number as a permanent identification number that will not change if the vessel's name, ownership or flag are changed. It applies to cargo vessels that are at least 300 gross tons (gt) and passenger vessels of at least 100 gt. It does not apply to vessels that are:
• Vessels solely engaged in fishing • Ships without mechanical means of propulsion • Pleasure yachts • Ships engaged on special service • Hopper barges • Hydrofoils, air cushion vehicles • Floating docks and structures classified in a similar manner • Ships of war or troopships • Wooden ships
MMSI -‐ Number A Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI) is a series of nine digits which are sent in digital format over a radio frequency channel in order to uniquely identify ship stations, ship earth stations, coast stations, coast earth stations and group calls. Any vessel with Inmarsat communication or traveling internationally will be assigned a MMSI number. Also when traveling to foreign ports, one is required to have a Restricted Radiotelephone Operator Permit holder aboard. Call Sign -‐ Maritime radio users are required to be licensed and hold a call sign for their vessel. Merchant and naval vessels are assigned call signs by their national licensing authorities. Typically, these are 2 letters to identify the vessel country fouled by a series of letters and numbers. Call signs for larger vessels consist of the
national prefix number plus three letters With any or all of these unique identification numbers one can be guided using the following: http://www.itu.int/online/mms/mars/ship_search.sh http://www.yachttrack.org http://www.vesselfinder.com For fun see what you can find for the following vessels:
M/Y GALACTICA Pleasure craft, IMO 9426673
LADY CHRISTINA Pleasure craft, IMO 1008530
GUNDRUN MAERSK Cargo, Call sign OYAU2 While this is all very technical and relatively automated, sometimes we have to get back to basics. For example, if all of the electronic gear on the vessel is turned off and the vessel may have been towed or in dry dock, one may have to visit the harbor master of the last known location to get some information. Talk to the people in the brokerage business, yacht and boat chandlery folks, fuel suppliers, and other assorted wharf rats to get what you need to know. Also, I’d advise that you call the manufacturer and see if you can get any information on where they may have shipped repair parts, or the vessel outfitter to see if they have had recent communication with the owners and/or captain. I also like approaching people who gather at or near a crew staffing business and/or vessel charter operations. These expensive boats rarely sit idle when their owner is not with them. The vessels are crewed up and chartered out to help defray the cost of ownership. Chatting up several of the yacht personnel and offering a “finder’s fee” has proved often to be very productive. 2. OPSEC, Economic Espionage, and Competitive Intelligence – The iPhone Hacks The iCloud Any read of Aegis has seen our comments about security and the cloud – THERE IS NO SECUTIY IN THE CLOUD. Yet again, we are confounded by another attack on cloud computing. Via the ‘find my phone’ app hackers have been able to gain access to persons phones. The hackers now block access to your records and hold them, or access to them, for ransom. – give us money or we will continue to block your access to your phone and your cloud data. The hackers cannot only block access, but they themselves have full access and can also read and manipulate the information and even erase all your information.
Everything we seem to own has a computer in it. Recently, I rented a car and the car tried to sync with my cell phone for my contacts and music play list. January 16th2014 Security Researchers from Proofpoint found more than 100,000 Smart TVs, Refrigerators, and other smart household appliances compromised by hackers to send out 750,000 malicious spam emails using those “smart” appliances. So – you’re still using the cloud? – argh. Kate Middleton’s phone was hacked 155 times by News of The World and she did not know it at the time of the hacks. If your phone is linked to your cloud storage and your phone is hacked – boom! the bad guy is in and has access to all you have stored on the cloud. I watched a “proof of concept” demonstration where using RF transceivers that were part of a sensor array a remotely and wirelessly exploitable memory corruption bug was inserted and through one of those wireless sensor nodes. With access to the sensor nodes compromised, the user was able to access not only the central IT facilities but … the company’s cloud storage. The demonstration took less than 20 minutes. There are more holes in the cloud than there are with a real cloud. Stop using the cloud for secure storage. 3. Executive Protection –My Oligarch Has Been Sanctioned It happened despite as silly as it may seem it really did happen. One of our cherished and best of our Graymen was working for a client that was sanctioned. When one runs an international organization with men and women from many counties the organization, its professionals are saddled with their nation’s contrasting and competing ideologies… and restrictions. March and April of this year several nations and organizations sanctioned several parties in Russia, Ukraine, the Crimea and a Finland. The current troubles in Ukraine date from long ago. There are different religions and different outlooks. There has also been a long history of self-‐serving and utterly corrupt and unfortunate leaders. They remind me of Detroit’s past leadership – corrupted and greedy leaders – so greedy they stole too much – and crashed the city. So be it, life moves on, and so will the Ukraine. But we need to be more worldly in our outlook, as we are men and woman of the world. Recently, because of the troubles in Ukraine several nations imposed sanctions on a number of persons and companies. The US was not the only nation to express its displeasure –in formal terms. Norway, Great Britain, Canada, Switzerland,
Liechtenstein, Austria, Australia and the EU to name a few, were some of the countries involved. . But Ukraine is not alone; events and troubles all around the world exist. We only try to protect those who hire us from those who mess with, annoy, and threaten our charges. So what do we need to do to keep abreast of the sanctions and our charges and Graymen? The first is keep on top of the news. Sanctions are conflict with out weapons, it is economic. If you think governments are OK – with little violations – look at the fines leveled at BNP Paribas. These fines were for the violations of sanctions. Sanctions that were part of the US, EU and yes – France is a member of the EU. ( To confirm this I asked insiders in Brussels and with a heavy and smiling sigh, these well-‐placed insiders said yes France is a member of the EU. ) But not all people and companies are sanctioned in the same way. Some people may be sanctioned by Canada and not the US – I know, go figure. Many others may be sanctioned by Norway and Switzerland and not the EU. This is the case for the round of sanctions having to do with the troubles in Ukraine. But troubles can be elsewhere. Imagine that you are working for a charge and as the case with many we work for we are not just part of the EP team but in charge of all security. Often these people move items of value to and from sanctioned countries or to or from persons or business that are sanctioned. As we are in charge of all security we are requested/required to provide or coordinate transport and logistical security for these items. As head of security you have to check the goods, the origin and destination of the goods, and the other parties to the transaction against all sanctions list that may apply. That can be a half a dozen or more lists very easily. Troubles can be between Venezuela, Columbia and Ecuador. Or troubles can be between Kashmiris and Indians, or between the Hayfields and the McCoys – such is the nature of conflicts and sanctions. Some new animosities pop up while old rivalries dissipate. In the mean time each party will have their own sanctions list that needs to be consulted. But we cannot be cut short in our planning or thinking. Even the idea that if we only recruited Graymen from neutral countries such as Switzerland and Norway we would be without the need to check for sanctions. But Ukraine’s troubles have proved this rule of thumb fanciful. Or maybe we can just recruit from nations not yet developed enough to have an opinion such as Costa Rica, Angola, Namibia, or Laos – but what would we have for diversity of skills and language. Hmong is a good language I am told, but not widely spoken. So we must deal the hand we are dealt – and work with people in those places and time as a combination of skills, language fluency, specific ability and – national
prerogatives allowing. So what does one do when one’s nationality finds one dealing with a sanctioned person? To tell the truth and disengage as quickly as possible. These people rarely have only one Grayman, so do what is right and honest as quickly as possible. Document the time you were made aware of the issues as well as what you did to disengage. Preserve the record with both your employer and legal counsel – and leave it at that. The world is undergoing a severe transmutation of ideologies, economic and boundaries. Colonialism is gone, commonalities of interest are dashed, it seems each is out for their own – tribe for tribe, money for money. Just, (gotta borrow this from the Boy Scouts) “Be Prepared.” This Executive Protection article was written or edited by Baron James Shortt, the

4. Technical Issues –Cell Phone Vulnerabilities What Cell Phone OS is most vulnerable -‐ From Phys.org (edited) Good news! Android OS has around 80% of the total market share. This is in part due to price and the range of devices using the Android OS. The bad news is that the Android platform has the most malware. Google does control which apps go on sale on its official Google Play store, but there are many rogue unofficial Google Play sites hosting a collection of free applications that will compromise your phone as well as give away personal details such as your credit card number if you use them. The malware experts have challenged even Google’s claims that the official store is secure. The problem with Android is that because of its popularity and the open source nature of the platform, it is an easy target. So if you get an Android phone or tablet, you should consider installing an anti-‐malware application. Apple iPhone If you have not jailbroken your iPhone, removing all the restrictions implemented by Apple, you are very safe from malware. If you have jailbroken your iPhone, you voided any warranty and support from Apple, and you have a very exposed smartphone. Is Windows OS good? For now, don't worry about Windows phones. Microsoft has not yet gained market significance in this sector, and still only holds around 2.3% of
the market. Chinese phones come with preloaded with spyware -‐ From Associated Press Berlin. A Chinese-‐made smartphone carried by major online retailers comes preinstalled with espionage software. This Android OS smartphone already ships with dangerous malware preinstalled. G Data Software said it found malicious codes hidden deep in the propriety software of the Star N9500 when it ordered the handset from a website late last month. The find is the latest in a series of incidents where smartphones have appeared preloaded with malicious software. G Data spokesman Thorsten Urbanski said his firm bought the phone after getting complaints about it from several customers. He said his team spent more than a week trying to trace the handset's maker without success. They have no idea who the manufacturer is or where, other than China, they are located. Fake Security Apps Several fake security app such as Kaspersky Anti-‐Virus 2014 have been found on several sites. Kaspersky rightly has some of the best mobile anti malware and anti virus software – but that is not the name of their product. So, you don’t like getting hacked? Tough stuffing – over half of Americans have been hacked or had their information compromised in the last year. We are toting around mobile devices, phones, pads, and cars all with weak applications that are not fully tested. Holes are found every week exposing us to ever-‐greater threats and ever-‐greater data compromises. Prepare for the compromise or suffer inordinately. 5. Real Stories from the Field–6 Countries, 4 presentations, 28 days New York, NY – 2 days of AML training. It was a good class, but some still do not seem to understand how a broker dealer – that accepts no cash can be used for money laundering and layering. The broker dealers are being used for layering money and not placement. The room rates were out of sight and I stayed in China town and walked to the event. I do enjoy New York as it is an easy town to get around in. Prague – 1 day training, and 3 days working with a client on launching a new product and working with legacy supplier issues. The company had a real risk problem, one main supplier, one shipping company and one payment processor. We worked for a year to diversify suppliers and shippers, and we were too late. A spat between the supplier and shipper ended
Washer Knob? Dryer Knob?
shipments. Sales were off by 60%, but now back to 100% and with the launch of a new product – even better. Prague was very hot and we had no air conditioning. The suite had a washer and dryer thank goodness, took three attempts to get the washer to work well, never really succeed with the dryer – by the cloths were a bit dryer – but not dry. Can you figure out these knobs? Poland – drove to Poland to meet one of our investigators for breakfast. It was a small town in the mountains, Jelenia Góra, it was cold so we had onion and potato soup and coffee for breakfast. It was very good. Amman, Jordan – Launched the American Anti-‐Corruption Institute’s Chapter in Amman. Albatross Consulting is the local exclusive vender for the AACI and they did a great job at the launch http://albatrossjo.com; we even made the local television. Dubai and Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, a bit of instruction, a bit of consulting and a bit of wonderment. When I tell you there is a Currency Exchange and or a Money Service Business every 1 to 2 minutes of walking down the street in Dubai – it is NOT and exaggeration. They even have them at the local Metro Stations. Then when you go to Dubai Mall the world’s largest mall – there is an entire section dedicated to banking and financial services – and the section is very large. It reminds me of the Louvre in Paris – a big and very attractive building, with lots of people walking around with their mouths open and once you get in, it is very hard to find the exit! Also it is hot and humid at 114 degrees and 45% humidity. It really reminded me of being at home just before a summer monsoon storm. There was a bit of a scam going on here. Guys are driving around trying to sell Italian suits out of their cars. The story is that they came to a fashion show and if they go back to Italy with the suits they have to pay duty -‐ la la la and they are willing to sell you a suit, always Armani out of the back of their car. The salesmen are -‐ at least the three I have met, Italian. These suit scammers, stop and ask you for directions -‐ I give them bad directions, and they say -‐ ah yes that is correct and then they pitch for the sale of the Armani suit. I say -‐ ah, Armani is OK for a low level office worker, the boss needs to wear Brioni or Kiton. For example I have..... At this point, they roll their eyes and drive off. Good fun and entertainment on my walks. They are serious about a few things here. One, no pictures of Emiratis – two, you get a ticket they will not only fine you but impound your car for from 15 to 45 days. Thus most here are very good when driving on the street, no red light runners here. It is day 20 on the road, I am sick of doing my laundry in the tub, I miss the whatchamacallit dials in Prague. Hong Kong and Macau –I made it for the rainy season. Hot and humid, what? is this Miami? This is a city of many contrasts. Its is big city, but very easy to get about. In
Jelenia Góra, Poland – Main Square
summer it is an uncomfortable city with the heat and humidity, but the city is so laced with tunnels and underground and between building pathways that one can near get about the whole city and never be on the street. A hard working city with very intelligent and aggressive businessmen with some of the best leisure activities any big city could have.
On my last walk from the subway station I had nine offers for suits, three offers for real knock off watches, and two offers for massage. The streets hawkers are just about as subtle as the neon lights. 6. BSA, AML, & OFAC –Iraqi Dinar I have watched this rube of an investment idea for years. The heart of the rube assumptions is that the Iraqi dinar will be revalued upward. At 1,168 to the US dollar – it more or less makes sense to some less world people that there were too many dinars to the dollar. Here is the scenario…
From 2004 until 2012, Iraq Government Debt to GDP averaged at 188.4 Percent reaching an all time high of 493.7 Percent in December of 2004 and a record low of 31.3 Percent in December of 2012. In short, the government was on its way to be a debt free nation. Thus a major revaluation would have to occur – as they would be one of the only debt free nations in the world! And they were part of the treasure kingdom with billons in gold and oil. Furthermore, it was no doubt a plan put together by George Bush, Dick Cheney, Alan Greenspan, and then Senator Barak Obama years ago as a way for the U.S. government to be repaid for their efforts and expenditures in Iraq.
The US government is reported to be the single largest holder of the Iraqi dinar. Fueling the speculation that somehow the US government was on the inside track of wealth making. Really? What crack addled thinking is this -‐ especially after the US lost billions of US dollars lost in solar subsidies. The US government
cannot make good investments. Yes, the US treasury is the largest holder of the Iraqi dinar outside of Iraq – but that was because the Iraq government needed US dollars. There is no active market for Iraqi dinar other than for people in Iraq to sell the dinar and get dollars.
10,000 Iraqi Dinar
Rain in a neon canyon
Currency has two components of value. The first is a combination of the reliability and creditworthiness of a government. The second and more importantly is what people think of the currency. Up until recently, Iraq has been a credit worthy country post Hussein. However, no one for a long time has trusted the stability of the government. Most Iraqi businessmen held their reserves in US dollars and Euros in other jurisdictions. This mistrust has recently proven omniscient to us on the outside of Iraq. But this is not the case for those inside Iraq including the Kurds in the north, Suni in the west and the Shia in the southeast. They have all told anyone who would listen that Iraq will split in three and the betrayal of their sovereign rights by the Sykes-‐Picot of 1916 treaty will finally be undone. 7. Guest Column –by Gail Kasper, Fun Up Your Workout
Gail Kasper is an Author and Television Host Just because you’re serious about staying fit doesn’t mean you have to strip your workout of fun. In fact, it’s a great idea to make your exercise routine more entertaining because, chances are, you’ll want to work out longer. Adding an element of fun will keep you from getting bored and help you stay fully engaged in what you’re doing, thus maximizing your benefits. To fun up your next workout, try the following: Add Music: Just as competitive ice skaters and gymnasts practice their routines to music, you can do your workout while listening to your favorite tunes. Select music that suits your preferences and matches the pace of your workout. Before you know it, not only will your songs be over, your workout will be, too … which might propel you to play a couple more songs and exercise a little longer! Invite A Friend: Whether you’re going for a jog or need a spotter for those heavy weights, having a friend along makes it feel more like playing than working out. Schedule time to exercise with a friend and catch up on each other’s lives. Good workout buddies help one another get the most from each session. They can offer encouragement while keeping you accountable and making the workout more enjoyable. Incorporate Playful Tools: Mini trampolines, exercise balls, hula-‐hoops – what do these items have in common? They’re fun! They add another dimension to your exercise routine, turning fitness into play. You might even laugh out loud while you enjoy a more playful routine. If you’re still not convinced that funning up your workout is the way to go, then consider this: Research shows that just believing in the benefits of fun and laughter is enough to experience them, such as decreased pain. When you feel less pain, you’re more likely to work out longer and harder, bringing added fitness benefits to
your body. So the next time you work out, put on some music, bring a friend, or add playful fitness tools. Your workout will be more enjoyable and you’ll likely spend more time on keeping fit, just for the fun of it. Book and Product Reviews –Air Travel Is it better than a long caravan or sea voyage? – yes. Are some flights better than others? – oh, heck yes. Are some seating configurations better than others? – uh huh. The good thing about caravans is that almost everybody within the caravan is working toward the same goal. Wake up, have coffee and a wee bit of breakfast, make sure the animals are fed and watered well, load animals and head off. It builds a sense of community. With today’s air travel – people board flights as though there were being pursued through the terminal by tribe obsidian blade wielding New Guinea cannibals. Likewise they disembark as though at a moments notice the aircraft will be flooded with some nerve agent. Add to that the aircrafts touch down followed by 300 cell phones turning on and belching forth all of the missed calls, emails, texts and alerts in a cacophony that sound like a calliope being sat upon by a careless and particularly large third grade teacher. Now, if you are unlucky and have ticked off the travel gods – you will be on a flight were all children scream – not cry – scream for the entire stinking flight. Healthy children with big, strong lungs. I take issue not with the children but with the parents. The age of the children that scream and holler and carry on are those of 3 and under. They demand so little; hug me – hold me -‐ feed me -‐ play with me – change me – rock me, that a parent should be able to figure it out! Waving a cellophane bag containing the flight’s plastic eating utensils for the dinner most people did not eat – is annoying to the child and everyone within ear shot of the crackling of the cellophane and the further screaming annoyance of the child. It is also dangerous for the child should the child be bold enough you reach out and grab the cellophane bag with his chubby fist and shove it in its face, as this is what small children do. In these instances the children should be cared for and the parents admonished – or at least screamed at and have their chair kicked by other adults.
The one, the one and only child who does not scream, that precious little angel – has finally ceased kicking your chair and has passed out. You lean to one side and rest your head in you hand a lean up against the bulkhead. Only, this little angel has some how through a magical mysterious fit of somnambulistic contortions managed to lever his foot between the bulkhead and your chair and kick your elbow off the arm rest upon which your arm was resting to support your head. You head no longer supported by your arm, bounces off the bulkhead with a dull thwack sound. That was truly amazing. Some aircraft have very nice seats, some have horrid seats. Airbus and Recaro seem to have enlisted the design features of Tomás de Torquemada’s confession chair designed and made the chair dang uncomfortable. The thin stiff chairs are a molded contraption, with curves in the wrong places wrapped in Naugahyde – (synthetic leather that does not breath – it’s the same material of which body bags are made). After 60 minutes in the chair, one’s muscles spasm concurrently with the sensation of a slow process of the adhesion of your butt and back to the chair. If one flies more that 90 minutes in such an equipped aircraft, one departs the flight half stooped with spasms compounded with a sweaty back and butt. 9.
