The Department of Public Health and Informatics (PHI), under the faculty of Biological Sciences at Jahangirnagar University, is the first department in the history of Bangladesh, which conducts undergraduate program and is committed to make fresh graduates having a complete knowledge about Public Health.

Prevent, promote and protect- holding this motto the department of Public Health and Informatics started its journey in the year of 2011 with 33 students in first batch and 1 faculty member. From then, the journey has never been stopped rather enhanced. Now, at 2015, there are 4 batches in this department having more than 150 students and 5 faculty members.

As a completely new department, not only in Jahangirnagar University, but also in Bangladesh, this department faced a lot of obstacles. At first, the main problem was classroom scarcity. For this problem both students and teachers suffered a lot. It was like that, one batch is conducting its classes in the classroom and other batches have to wait outside for the classroom. Besides lack of laboratory facilities and faculty members were remarkable.

At present, the department of Public Health and Informatics has its own building. It was possible for the great efforts of the chairman Professor Dr. Abdur Rahman, the students as well as the authority of the university. In this regard the effort of hon'ble Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. Farzana Islam is specially mentionable. On January 27, 2015 the new building was opened by the vice-chancellor Professor Dr. Farzana Islam. The building has an international seminar room, three classrooms, and a lab room which is now in under development.

Global Developmental Transition towards SDGs

Achievements of MDGs in Bangladesh are remarkable particularly in poverty alleviation, food security, primary school enrollment, gender parity in primary & secondary-level education, lowering infant, under-5 & maternal mortality, improving immunization coverage & reducing communicable diseases. Despite these improvements, there are challenges ahead.

In 2012, as the post-2015 framework for international development, UN member states agreed to start designing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which are - “action-oriented, concise and easy to communicate, limited in number, aspirational, global in nature and universally applicable to all countries while taking into account different national realities, capacities and levels of development and respecting national policies and priorities”. The SDGs aim to complete the unfinished MDGs and more over, addressing the root causes of poverty, inequality and the universal need for development that works for all people.

In September 2015, UN General Assembly adopted the 2030 Development Agenda titled “Transforming our world”. The proposal contains 17 goals with 169 targets covering a broad range of sustainable development issues including ending poverty & hunger, improving health & education, making cities more sustainable, combating climate change and protecting oceans and forests. So the outcome reiterates national ownership and leadership.

The past successes are likely to make Bangladesh an early starter of the new set of goals. However, strong political commitment, public-private partnership and peoples' empowerment are the key strategies to achieve the new sustainable goals and targets by 2030. Let us hope for evolving new innovations to win over the new challenges.
