Many cacti and succulents grow in rocky crevices on slopingterrains that provide excellent drainage. For this reason, these typeof plants grow best in porous, quickly draining media such as 60%peat/40% perlite or 50% peat/50% perlite. In general, werecommend 50% organic/50% inorganic like pumice, sand, orPerlite. No more than 10% sand as it compacts. Sand used forpotting media must be clean and free from pathogens.

In general, pH for cacti and succulents should be in the range of5.8 to 6.3. EC rates vary somewhat among the various genera ofcacti and succulents, dependent upon the particular rate of growth, but in general, EC should be in the range of 1.5 to 2.25. Generasuch as Echeverias, which can quickly lose their characteristic colorand appearance when given too much fertilizer, should receivelower rates.

Best practices for irrigation include watering early in the day if theonly option is overhead watering. This will allow maximum hours forthe water to dry from the epidermis of the plant before the onsetof cooler evening hours. This practice mitigates some of theenvironmental conditions that can lead to various fungal attacks.Soil media should be drenched fully, then allowed to dry to thelevel that only the bottom 10-20% of the media is still moist beforesubsequent irrigations.

Many of the plants included in this program can eventually beplanted in the landscape in full sun. Some will do fine in thelandscape, but require some shade or morning sun only.

A few are best suited for windowsill culture or greenhouse culture. In general, those best suited for greenhouse or lathhouse culturewill have their best appearance at 1700 to 2500 foot candles oflight. Those best in morning sun can be grown between 4000 and6000 foot candles of light. Full sun landscape conditions produce7500 to 11000 foot candles depending on the region and daylength. Cultural requirements will need to be adjusted as neededbased on growing location and time of year.
