SUMMER OF SUCCESS Fashion Graduate

Alison Ballard is a recent graduate after

completing her degree in Fashion. She is

based in Newquay and is about to start

her journey launching her own label

called Silly Old Sea Dog.

I asked Alison about her final

collection. “The dresses I have made

have been created with vintage style

in mind. The dress I am most proud of

is the large photo fabric dress; the

reason for this being that I also designed

and had the fabric printed myself. My

Great Grandfather, Richard Barker

throughout the 1950’s mainly took the

images on this dress. My Dad was lucky

enough to have been able to keep hold

of a number of his photo albums, where

I was able to take the images from to

create them into a fabric. This dress is

very special as it contains images of my

Great Grandfather, and my Nana and

Grandpa (including images of them on

their wedding day) along with my Mum,

Aunts, Uncles and various scenery shots.

The dress even includes some pictures

of the Queen during her Coronation

Tour in which she visited my Great

Grandfather’s place of work –

Rolls Royce in Derby.”

“My final collection was shot at Classic Air Force in Newquay

where they have a large collection of vintage planes available

for visitors to view and take pleasure flights in. I was also lucky

enough to have use of a 1969 VW Karmen Ghia. By using the

airbase and hanger at Classic Air Force I have been able to

gain a set of beautiful images for my work with a very vintage

inspired look.”

Brand new premises for Poppy Treffry

Poppy Treffry are celebrating after moving

their shop to busy premises in the middle of

St Ives. After trading for two and a half years

from their shop in the Drill Hall the team have

found a new home for their handmade gifts,

homewares and accessories. The shop is

located at 42 fore street and was previously

a craft shop.

“We’ve found having a shop has been a

great way to introduce more people to our

range” said Poppy. “We felt that after two

and a half years we were confident it was

successful and we wanted to take it to the

next level, which was definitely moving on

to fore street.”

Quirky Cornish design company Poppy Treffry

are in their ninth year of trading and have

grown from just Poppy and a single sewing

machine back in 2003 to a team of 12 people

supplying Fortnum and Masons, Anthropologie,

White Stuff and many others.

The opening of the new shop comes during

a busy 2013 for the company. A new range

of printed fabrics and bags launched earlier

in the year, a retail catalogue hit doorsteps

across the country last month and a series of

short videos are currently being produced to

introduce the company further. The team also

have shows several London shows to attend

and are preparing for the Cornish Design Fair

in August.

FASHIONDESIGNER

Q: What is it like now you have moved into your new studio in the

Princes House?

A: It’s such a special building to be working in every day. We all come

in through the front door and have a sneaky smile to ourselves I think.

I am a history nut so for me to be working in a place with so much

character and such an important story really adds an extra dimension

to my working day. I often wonder about the people that lived there

- above and below stairs - and imagine what the stories of their lives

might have been.

Q: Who do you have in mind when you are designing?

A: I trained as a costume designer so for me the character is the all

important starting point. With my bespoke work I quite literally use the

bride, her personality, her likes and dislikes, her plans for her day as

inspiration. When I'm putting together a collection I imagine the

character that might be drawn to the dress - sometimes I look to

personalities from history to help me!

I recently had the pleasure of meeting Annalise Harvey who is a bridal

and occasion designer. Annalise is an award-winning Couturier who

was trained at Central St Martin's and London College of Fashion, and

enjoyed a successful career designing costumes for the ballet for ten

years prior to her relocation to Cornwall.

ANNALISE HARVEYINTERVIEW WITH

Page 17: Aesthetip issue1 June

Q: Where do you get your inspiration?

A: History and heritage mostly - I love the

stories that history can tell us, and I work

hard to try to weave some of those stories

into my work. I am fanatical about detail

and use Pinterest to collect board after

board of details from historical garments

and haute couture gowns. I look to other

designers, we all do, and I am in awe of

Elie Saab for his intricately beading and

finished gowns and Zac Posen for his

awesome pattern cutting!

LIMBO—CORNWALL

ART BIENNALE

The LIMBO event was held back in April

in an old coffin store in Truro. The event

was well attended and it was the talk

of the town for the month. It was a

celebration of visual arts culture taking

place in Cornwall – a coming together

to celebrate achievement through

painting, sculpture, film, performance,

sound, collaborative art projects,

screenings and talks it will showcase

the diverse practice of 100s of artists

over a series of events.

The exhibition was conceived, instigated

and supported by Joseph Clarke, Samuel

Bassett, Jesse Leroy Smith and Neil Scott.

Part of the exhibition was 'FIAT LUX LATIN -

LET THERE BE LIGHT' (A TAAP PROJECT)':

Members of TAAP invited 10 other artists

to collaborate on a room of 20 portraits.

The theme was to paint 10 famous

individuals that have attempted to

take their lives and 10 that have done

so. A poignant voyage into what paint

can bring to life.

Among these artists were, Jesse Leroy

Smith, Richard Ballinger, Jason Walker,

Marie Claire Hamon, Faye Dobinson,

Jayne Anita Smith, Morweena Morrison,

Paul Fry, Emma Griffin, Caroline Pedler,

Ben Sanderson and many more.

JUNE23

Page 25: Aesthetip issue1 June

the point of finished, to being

overworked.

For me it was the interaction

and the joining of creative

minds, with some incredible

bits of work being the physical

outcome. Also I have got to

know so great people.

Did I enjoy it?, did I get anything

from it? and would I do it again?

oh yes. I look forward to being

involved further with this motley

crew of personalties and to

whatever that may result in.”

WORDS BY EMMA GRIFFIN AND

CAROLINE PEDLER.

IMAGES BY GRIFFIN PHOTOGRAPHY

We recently asked Caroline Pedler

her views on working on the project.

“My experience of working on Fiat

Lux, with TAAP was a bit of an eye

opener really. It made me feel

confident, inspired, inadequate

and creative all at the same time.

I felt confident because I was

fortunate enough to be invited

('invited' being the operative and

exciting word here) to work along

side a group of rather talented and

inspiring artists that were curated by

Taap. I felt inadequate because it's

just little ole Caroline who illustrates

children's books, and finds herself in

the middle of a group of established

fine artists who have names, and

more importantly work that travels

far and wide in the art world. It gave

me confidence also because I felt

that it was my work that got my here,

and not my networking, which is

normally the case.

The idea was to all work on a series

of portraits (that had been prepared

by Taap) of people who had either

tried to, or have successfully

committed suicide. So for a week artists

came and went. Some came in religiously

everyday, others like myself went in

whenever they could fit it in around work

(Children's books!) and other duties etc.

I only made it in for two days. My first day

was about making marks and in hindsight,

felt that I had missed the point, i.e.

representing these people and their faces,

so I decided to be brave and work on the

faces next time. I went in again offering

myself to the work in more depth and

working with more conviction.

Although my additions didn't feel

worthy, the process itself was so

rewarding!

Working with artists with a similar

mind set and outlook on the creative

process, some of whom I knew and

was inspired by and others I had no

idea of their work or their process,

was daunting and exhilarating all in

one. The energy in the room was

incredible. It was a celebration of

sharing, encouragement, bravery,

collaboration and a little bit of

rebellion too. The light in the space

was stunning, and I daydreamed

of this space being my studio or my

house! but it was especially delightful

around the corner, where the coffin

installation was hung. Working in the

exhibition space felt like we were

really in the thick of it, like we

belonged in this space at that

time and therefore felt more

connected when it opened for

the preview night, feeling proud

of the space and the work in it.

Although you were connected to

the work with the marks you added,

you were not protective over them.

You went in knowing your marks could

be erased at any time in favour of a

sweeping blue hue, or a wash of white

or a lower hairline. For me this is a very

important part of my own process and

something I have learnt to overcome

in order to maintain a sense of honesty

and immediacy in my own work,

which I think added to some of the

works at Fiat Lux, but also in my

opinion, for some pushed them past JUNE 24

PHOTOGRAPHER Andrea Pennington

We caught up with Andrea toask her about her recent photography shoot.

A dream has come true for the photographer Andrea Pennington. On May 25th when F3 came to the UK Andrea spent the weekend dodging single seaters in the pitlane at the home of British Motorsport.

Photographing for the Formula 1 has been a lifelong dream for Andrea and we are excited to see the images and ask this talented photographer about this project.

How long have you been a photographer?

I have been using my camera professionally for 5 years now.

What is your favourite subject to shoot?

Children, they give so much without even trying. Their emotions are right there for all to see without any adult hang ups about looks and appearances.

Tell us about this project?

I was asked initially to take some profile shots for two up and coming Formula 3 racing drivers, which may have been as simple as a studio session. However, the man in charge liked my documentary work and invited me along to the British Formula 3 weekend at Silverstone on May 25th and 26th as an access all areas member of the media.

Why is this a dream come true?

Its simple, i have been a Formula 1 racing fan or longer than I can remember, Silverstone is the home of British motor racing and in my birth county Northamptonshire. Standing on the Grid at Silverstone was something that words just cannot express, being able to use the venue and open wheel single seaters alongside my photography work is a lifelong expression of emotions fulfilled.

How did you get this job?

It is a long story of coincidence, luck and people who were willing to take me seriously as an artist.

How have you prepared for this shoot?

Camera kit checked, double checked and triple checked, accommodation booked, friendly assistant free to help, research into motorsport photography from all angles done, large fancy lens hired and packed up alongside waterproofs and suncream.

What have been the highs and lows?

No lows....really, if this is the last thing i ever did with my photography I would be satisfied. I am planning however, to make more trips in this area of work in the future.

What was your favourite part of undertaking this shoot?

Standing on an empty grid while the sun set low in the sky over Luffield, talking about what scares us the most with two racing drivers and my fearless friend and assistant for the weekend Hayley. Perfectly surreal.

What’s next for you?

More motorsport PR photography with a bit of luck.....Formula 1 maybe ?? Oh, and a month full of nursery photography, some weddings and some projects with fellow creatives

Artists across Cornwall opened up their studios for Open Studios Cornwall 2013.

With so many artists to see this year, you really don’t know whereto start. We picked two venues,Trewidden in Penzance and thegrade II listed Porthmeor Studiosin St Ives, to view some of artists there.

Trewidden houses15 artists andis run by Henry Garfit, who is also the director at the Newlyn School Of Art.

We like this venue because it’s a beautiful building, there are lots to see and so many mixed styles of art. It is easy to get to, free parking andthere is even a coffee shop. There isalways a great atmosphere here.

We picked four studios based in Trewidden, they were the studios of Jayne Anita Smith, Paul Fry,Faye Dobinson and Susanna Bauer.

TWO ARTIST’S JOIN FORCE

Faye Dobinson and Jesse Leroy Smith have joined fore to collaborate together on a painting in a studio space in

Porthmeor Studios, St Ives. This exciting mixture of artists working together was a real must see.

Faye is the ‘women’ of the moment;

she is everywhere featured in Cornwall

Living, Cornwall Today magazine and

is our front cover girl.

Much of Faye’s work investigates the

notion of place and the spaces we

inhabit. This preoccupation has taken

her to Mongolia and Tibet, where she

exhibited, and other countries with

topographies dramatically different

to the London where Faye lived and

worked. Ultimately she was drawn to

a wilder space and settled in West

Cornwall, while studying at Falmouth

University; where she graduated in

2012 with a first degree in Fine Art.

In our mind Faye is an emerging artist

to watch out for. She has been working

out of Studio 9 at St Ives renowned

Porthmeor Studios. For 3 months she

has been creating a new body of work

reflecting the influence of this very special

space upon her working process.

Faye is now currently back in her main

studio in Trewiddenin studio 6.

JUNE35

Page 37: Aesthetip issue1 June

Jesse is an established artist

based in Newlyn and works

from his studio in the Newlyn

School Of Art. He is also is a

member and founder of

the Taap project.

Recently he was part of the

exhibition LIMBO CORNWALL

ART BIENNALE, where he ran

'FIAT LUX LATIN - LET THERE

JUNE 36

Page 38: Aesthetip issue1 June

I was invited to pop along and

capture the finished piece.

Working in the studio during May

they created a six by sixteen foot

painting straight on to one of

the walls within the space.

Q How long did the painting take you both to complete? It took about a week and we worked on piece together and a apart. It is still not actually finished we could do more on the painting and it is a starting point, an exercise for us both.

Q What was your aim for the piece, did you have in mind a plan?Originally we thought of creating a multi-layered wall, and then edit a line running through the piece as a whole.

Q What has been surprising with working together as two artists? The languages of us both have stayed strong; you can still see us both as individual artists through the painting.

Q What medium did you use?Mainly house paint but any paint we could get our hands on.

Q How do you feel now the painting has reached it’s stop period?Jesse, “ I am worn out and I am shocked by Faye’s energy. She has kept going through long hours”.

Faye – “ I think I have broken Jesse”.
