Better health. Lower costs.

Aetna Dental/Medical IntegrationSM Program Impressive results with coordinated dental and medical care

Good dental health can lead to improved overall health and cost savings. The more we learn about the connection between dental care and overall health, the clearer the advantages of improved dental care become.

Evidence shows that proactive dental care coordination can reduce medical costs and boost the physical health of your employees.

Dental benefits and dental insurance plans are offered, underwritten and/or administered by Aetna Health Inc., Aetna Dental Inc., Aetna Dental of California Inc. and/or Aetna Life Insurance Company (Aetna). Each insurer has sole financial responsibility for its own products.

Our mission is to keep members as healthy as possible — in every way possible. We were the first insurance and dental benefits company to publish a study showing how good dental health can reduce medical claims and improve overall health.1

Since 2006, we’ve teamed with Columbia University to conduct this industry-changing research. Based on our groundbreaking research, we pioneered our Aetna Dental/Medical IntegrationSM (DMI) program, an initiative that helps dental and medical benefits work together for better overall health and value. As study results became clear, so has our course of action and approach to coordinated medical and dental care.

And our ongoing data analysis continues to build on this original research by creating a healthier workforce.

An examination of periodontal treatment and per member, per month medical costs in an insured population. BMC Health Services Research 2006; 6:103. Continued analysis of retrospective study proves sustained results, Aetna Health Analytics, August 2008.

From research to real world results

From experience, we know that up to

20 percent of employees enjoy better health when their medical and dental data is integrated and dedicated outreach is provided.2

To date, we have identified

2 million at-risk members and provided

$50 million in enhanced dental benefits.3 These enhanced benefits encourage members to obtain needed care that can help prevent more serious and costly issues.

Dental health problems can be early signs of serious medical threats. Badly swollen gums can worsen the inflammation in blood vessels and can increase a person’s risk for high blood pressure, heart attack or stroke.

Aetna DMI program members had a 3.5% reduction in hospital admissions vs. a 5.4% increase for non-members.4

Members enrolled in the Aetna DMI program use 42% less major and basic dental services.4

Targeted dental care outreach results in a 10% increase in preventive dental care.4

On average, a DMI member has 17% lower medical claim costs.4

5 Of the diabetic members in the Aetna DMI program who started going to the dentist, only 17.8% are poorly controlled. For diabetic members in a comparable group with no Aetna DMI program, 32.6% are poorly controlled.6Ongoing statistically valid analysis of members in the Aetna DMI program. Aetna Informatics, 2010–2012.7 Albert D, Begg M, Andrews H, et al. An examination of periodontal treatment, dental care, and pregnancy outcomes in an insured population in the United States. American Journal of Public Health. January 2011; (101) No. 1. 151–156.8 Of the members in the Aetna DMI program who received dental treatment while pregnant, including 3 months before and 3 months after pregnancy, only 7.6% had preterm delivery. For pregnant members in a comparable group with no preventive dental care, 10.1% had preterm delivery.

Healthier pregnancies

Diabetic members in the Aetna DMI program experienced a 45% improvement in diabetes control.5

Mothers who received preventive dental treatment while pregnant had 25% lower preterm delivery rates.8

Mothers who received preventive dental treatment while pregnant had 34% fewer incidents of low birth weight.8

In general, a member with well controlled diabetes can cost $7.49 less per member, per month than someone whose diabetes is poorly controlled.6

Research shows that preventive and periodontal care may help people with chronic illnesses like diabetes stay healthier and require fewer costly health services.

Good dental care may even help women have healthier babies.7

Creating a healthier workforce

The Aetna DMI program engages employees by offering:

• Education by mail and e-mail on how gum disease can have negative effects on their health

• A dental coordinator to help choose a dentist and make an appointment

• Enhanced dental benefits*

• Follow up support by phone to provide all the care that’s needed

With Aetna, enhanced benefits for members are not subject to deductible or coinsurance and do not count toward the annual plan maximum

No extra cost, no extra paperwork, no hassle

When you offer both Aetna dental insurance and medical plansNo administrative effort is required on your part. No paperwork is necessary. And there is no extra cost for the program. Our database automatically identifies those who will benefit from the Aetna DMI program most, like employees with heart disease, diabetes or expectant moms who have not had a recent dental visit. Your identified employees are automatically enrolled in the program at no cost and without hassle.

When you offer Aetna dental insurance but a medical plan from a different carrierNo problem. We will work with you and with your employees to secure the medical information we need to enroll them in our program.

Everyone wins

• Our sophisticated system automatically identifies the employees in your company who can benefit most from regular dental care.

• Our research proves that integrated and coordinated dental care is a good idea.

• Better health for your staff. A healthier benefits budget for you.
