2013 Air Force Women’s Soccer • Head Coach Larry Friend

Larry Friend

Fifth Year Head Coach

(22-43-9)

16th season at Air Force

USAFA 1985

Larry Friend enters his fifth season as head coach

of the United States Air Force Academy women’s soccer

program. He is the second head coach to lead the Falcons

in their 21-year history.

Friend recently guided the Falcons to a 5-9-3 record

in 2012. The Falcons excelled on the defensive end, allow-

ing opponents to a 0.95 goals allowed average, one of the

lowest in program history. Sophomore midfielder Felicia

Sturgeon earned all-conference honors and junior forward

Leah Bratt was named team MVP. The team featured 10

all-academic selections, the most since 2006.

In 2011, the Falcons went 6-10-3. It was the program’s

second-winningest season in the previous eight years. The

squad featured four-year all-conference honoree and 2011

all-region selection forward Bridgett Murphy and freshman

midfielder McKenna Fox, who scored the most goals by a

Falcon since 2001. The Falcons continued to excel in the

classroom, garnering eight academic all-conference selec-

tions with Murphy garnering all-district honors for the third-

straight year.

Friend had the unenviable task of competing in a

tough Mountain West Conference his first year in 2009

with one of the youngest teams in the nation. The 2009

Falcons featured 12 freshmen and 11 sophomores, and just

three upperclassmen. With the lack of experienced play-

ers, the Falcons posted a 2-15-1 record. Sophomore forward

Bridgett Murphy was one of AFA’s bright spots, earning her

second All-Mountain West Conference honor.

The bumps and bruises of playing with such a young

team in 2009 paid off the following season, as a more ex-

perienced 2010 squad improved by six wins, to a succuss-

ful 8-9-2 record, despite having no seniors on the team.

The eight wins were the most since 2001 and the program

had its fewest losses ever in the Div. I era. Air Force scored

21 goals on the season, doubling the 10 goals scored in

2009. The Falcon defense had a fantastic season, allowing

0.91 goals per game and producing seven shutouts. The

0.91 GAA average was the second-lowest in school history

and the lowest since joining the MW.

Friend was an assistant at Air Force from 1992-1996

and 2002-2008. He started the women’s soccer program

with former head coach Marty Buckley while on active

duty in 1992. In their second season, the team broke

into the top 20 of the NCAA Division II weekly rankings.

They continued to improve each year with consistent top

20 NCAA rankings. By the fourth season, the 1995 team

achieved a 14-3-2 record with an NCAA Division II ranking

of seventh in the nation. They missed the NCAA champion-

ship round of eight by one slot, but produced their first All

American selection that season.

In 1996, Friend helped Buckley and the Falcons transi-

tion from Division II to Division I. They coached the team

to its first Division I tournament appearance in the West-

ern Athletic Conference Championships. In 1997, Friend re-

turned to his flying career.

After 12 years as an assistant coach, Friend looked

forward to the challenge as head coach. Friend feels that

the Air Force Academy women’s soccer program has and

will continue to produce officers who are prepared to serve

in the United States Air Force.

“Participating in a competitive team environment

provides our young women with the tools and life les-

sons necessary to lead others in the Air Force,” Friend said.

“Many past graduates have gone on to lead as pilots, doc-

tors, lawyers, in aircraft maintenance, as general aides and

numerous other exciting careers in the Air Force.”

The team has competed in the Mountain West

Conference since 1999. The conference is nationally com-

petitive and normally ranked in the top 10 out of all NCAA

Division I conferences. The Falcons have struggled to meet

this competitive challenge, but Friend is looking towards

changing that.

“The Academy is a tough environment that can be

taken advantage of only by individuals seeking a real chal-

lenge rewarded by incredible opportunities,” Friend said.

“Our players are ready and excited to expand their chal-

lenge to the soccer field.”

Friend calls Columbia, Md., his hometown. His father,

Joseph F. Friend, moved the family to Columbia in 1969 and

retired from the Navy in 1971. Friend graduated from Wilde

Lake High School in 1980, where he was team captain of

the soccer team and a member of the 1976 state cham-

pionship team. Friend went on to the Air Force Academy

and played for coach Luis Sagastume as a four-year starter

and team captain on the men’s team. His teams compiled

a 46-24-7 record, during which time he earned all-league

honors four times and was selected to the all-midwest re-

gion team his junior year. Friend is ranked third in the men’s

program for career assists and 20th for most points overall.

He was selected by his teammates as Best Offensive and

Most Inspirational player in two different seasons.

2013 Air Force Women’s Soccer • Head Coach Larry Friend

Friend continued his soccer career after graduating

from the Academy in 1985 to include playing overseas for

the Japanese team Sukazan while on active duty. He also

competed for four years on the all-Air Force soccer team in

the late 80s. He captained the team twice during his play-

ing career and led them to a pair of inter-service cham-

pionships. Friend was selected to the United States All-

Armed Forces Team all four years. He was selected team

captain of the U.S. Armed Forces team and led them to

a 1990 North American Championship in Victoria, Canada.

This victory qualified the U.S. for the 1991 Military World

Football Championship in Holland.

Friend ended his playing career after the Military

World Championships in 1991 and moved on to the coach-

ing ranks. He received his United States Soccer Federation

“A” license in 1994 and his Federation Goalkeeper license in

2007. Friend has worked with the state and region Olympic

Development Programs since 1992. He has coached numer-

ous competitive and developmental soccer teams in Colo-

rado and Maryland. He has also been an assistant coach

with the Air Force Academy men’s soccer program for two

seasons under coach Sagastume.

Friend retired from the Air Force in 2005 after 20

years of service. He flew over 2,000 hours as an instruc-

tor pilot, on search and rescue and VIP helicopters. Friend

completed helicopter pilot training at Fort Rucker Army

Post, Ala., in 1986 where he was selected as “top stick” in

both the contact and final phase of training.

In 1987, Friend began a two-year tour at Kadena Air

Base, Okinawa, Japan, as a combat search and rescue pilot

with the 33rd Air Rescue Squadron. He was credited with

two Joint Chiefs of Staff contingency (JCS) missions in the

Philippines and one life saved in Japan.

In 1989, Friend was assigned to the 41st Air Rescue

Squadron at Patrick AFB, Fla., as an instructor pilot and

NASA shuttle liaison officer. Friend flew numerous rescue

support flights for space shuttle launches and supplied

navigation stations in the Bahamas. He was lauded for his

efforts by the Secretary of Defense on a highly sensitive

JCS mission and credited with assist for a life saved off the

coast of Florida.

In 1992, Friend had his first stint coaching soccer and

instructing at the Air Force Academy. Friend was honored

with the Outstanding Military Educator of the Year award

in 1995. This is the highest award the Academy bestows on

its instructors.

In 1997, Friend was assigned to the 1st Helicopter

Squadron at Andrews AFB, Md., to fly Bell UH-1 Hueys. His

unit supported classified emergency action programs for

the national capital region. He also flew VIPs such as the

President of Egypt and the Vice President of the United

States. He returned to the Academy in 2001.

Friend earned a master’s degree in sport administra-

tion from the University of Northern Colorado in 1994. His

professional military education includes Squadron Officer

School in 1989 and Air Command and Staff College in 1999.

Friend and his wife, Maribeth, have been married 24

years and have three children, Corey, Carina, and Felicia.

His son, Corey, is currently a junior at USAFA.

pionships. Prior to her time at USC, Sutta was at St.

Edward’s University in Austin, Texas, where she served

as an assistant coach for three seasons and was the

interim head coach starting in November 2005.

A native of Aurora, Colo., Sutta played collegiate

soccer at Northern Colorado. A 2003 grad of UNC,

Sutta was a standout forward who holds the UNC

all-time assists record (33) and stands No. 2 in career

Robin Grossman

Assistant Coach

Third Year

Pacific University (Ore.) 2008

Robin Grossman enters his third year as an as-

sistant coach at Air Force. Grossman comes to the

Academy from nearby Colorado College, where he

was an assistant coach from 2009-11.

In his tenure with Colorado College, the Tigers

were 20-13-6. In 2009-10, he helped guide the Ti-

gers to a 12-6-2 record and a second place finish in

Conference USA. In his time with the Tigers, Gross-

man coached players to three first-team, two sec-

ond-team and four third-team All Conference USA

one team academic award from the National Soccer

Coaches Association of America.

From 2009-10, Grossman served as a director of

coaching for Colorado Rush Pikes Peak Soccer Club

in Colorado Springs. He served as the head coach for

their U15 Girls Premier teams, and worked with the

2013 Air Force Women’s Soccer • Season Outlook

Air Force women’s soccer kicks-off its 22nd

season Aug. 23 against Montana. Featuring one

of the youngest teams in program history, the

2013 Falcons will be learning on the fly.

Head coach Larry Friend, in his fifth year at

the helm, will lean on his 13 returning letterwin-

ners as the 12 newcomers get accustomed to

DIv. I soccer. The Falcons are coming off a 5-9-3

season in 2012 and return six starters to the

pitch.

Despite the loss of five starters and sev-

eral letterwinners from 2012, the Falcons return

several key players. Air Force features three

seniors with three years of starting experience,

in goalkeeper Kelly Stambaugh and midfielders

Leah Bratt and Kaleigh Moses. In addition, Team

Co-Defensive MVPs senior Loren Catchpole and

junior Kyle Williamson return. Also returning, is

senior forward Megan Dozier, who led the team

in assists a season ago, to bolster the Falcon

offense.

A talented freshman group, including an

emerging sophomore class, will be called upon

to fill out the lineup for AFA. With just weeks to

prepare for the season, Friend and his Fledgling

Falcons will have a quick learning curve as they

enter 2013.

Friend took a moment from preparing for

the upcoming season to talk about his 2013

team.

Q: How has the team looked so far in preseason

practices?

A: The practices have been very high-energy.

We’ve played with great focus which has al-

lowed us to train in a very competitive and pro-

ductive environment.

Q: This is one of the youngest teams in program

history. How do you get these youngsters pre-

pared to compete at the Div. I level with such a

short time to prepare?

A: Assistant coaches Kiha Sutta and Robin

Grossman have worked with these freshmen

since they were in high school to ensure they

were set to come here and we’re excited for

this group. This rookie class features quality

players that come from strong club programs.

With their club background, our freshmen come

to the Academy with a high knowledge of the

game. That has allowed them to pick up our

concepts quickly and progress towards our first

game of the season.

Q: Despite having such a young team, you still

have a solid core of upperclassmen. Is there

added responsibility for them to help guide this

young team?

A: The biggest challenge for our upperclassmen

has been to embrace the challenge of leading

the younger players. With half the team be-

ing freshmen, our juniors and seniors have to

lead, teach and hold the youngsters accountable

much more so than in seasons’ past.

Q: Who are your team captains?

A: Seniors Leah Bratt and Loren Catchpole are

our team captains. They’ve been leading our

team since January. They bring enthusiasm and

commitment to the program in addition to ex-

cellent leadership.

2013 Air Force Women’s Soccer • Season Outlook

Q: What are your expectations of the senior

class?

A: Our five seniors have been through it all, con-

sidering the adversity you have to overcome

when attending an institution such as the Air

Force Academy, both on and off the field. We

need them to be leaders both on and off the

field. We also expect them to have a significant

impact on the field.

Kelly Stambaugh ranks amongst our top

three in nearly every goalkeeping category and

has been a strong three-year starter for us. Our

defense has the lowest goals allowed average

in school history over the past three years with

Kelly. Megan Dozier is a smart player that has

the unique ability to be in the right place at the

right time off the ball. Leah Bratt is the engine

of our team and battles the entire 90 minutes

for us. Kaleigh Moses is a technically strong

player for us. She is willing to take risks of-

fensively and we will need more of that. Loren

Catchpole is the leader of our backfield. She’s

come back strong from an ACL injury early in

her career and posted an excellent junior sea-

son for us.

Q: How about the junior class?

A: It’s a small class, but a very passionate class.

We lost a bunch of players from this group,

whom decided to pursue other opportunities,

such as missions and studying abroad. But the

juniors we have are dedicated and striving to

make us better.

Hannah Schwartz is an incredible athlete

and one of the strongest athletes to come

through our program. She’s recently had sur-

gery and we look for her to get back as soon as

possible. Jackie Jacobs has been a strong con-

tributor for our team. She hasn’t seen game

action yet, but is an inspiring example to the

team every day. Kyle Williamson has played

solid defense for us since her freshman year.

She’s entering her third year as a starter and we

expect her to be a big presence for our defense.

Q: Your sophomore class features five players.

Are you expecting this group to step up after

seeing a lot of time as freshmen?

A: This group has to play like they’re upper-

classmen. We need them to show significant

improvement from their freshman seasons.

They’ve set a great example by competing every

practice and have also been strong mentors to

our freshmen.

Q: How does this freshman class stack up tal-

ent-wise to incoming classes in the past? Will

they be seeing immediate action?

A: This is one of our stronger freshman classes.

With freshmen making up 12 of our 25 play-

ers, we expect them to contribute immediately.

Like I mentioned earlier, their strong club back-

grounds will make their transition to this level a

lot smoother.

Q: How will the Mountain West as a conference

be with the influx of several new women’s soc-

cer programs?

A: Our conference was ranked seventh out of

32 conferences last year. With a couple strong

programs joining our conference, we should at

least be at the same level, if not rise more, in

conference strength.

Q: What will the Falcons have to do to have a

successful season in 2013.

A: We have been fit, organized and disciplined

over the last four years. Our defenses have

posted the second, third and fourth best goals

against averages in our Div. I era. We now just

need to be effective on the offensive aspects

of the game. In addition, we need to maintain

our energy as we enter October and conference

competition.

2012 Season RecapAir Force women’s soccer had a season of near-miss-es in 2012. The Falcons went 5-9-3 overall, finishing seventh in the Mountain West with an 0-7 mark. Af-ter starting out the season 4-1-2, the best start by the women since 2005, the Falcon offense struggled to get back on track, eventually dropping its last sev-en contests. Seven of Air Force’s nine losses came by just one score.

The Falcons allowed just two goals and pitched six shutouts in its first seven matches to start the sea-son. Air Force posted a 0.95 goals-allowed average for the season, the third lowest in school history and the second-lowest in the Div. I era.

Sophomore midfielder Felicia Sturgeon earned second-team all-conference honors for the Falcons. The team had 10 players named to the academic all-conference team, led by senior defender Eryn Avjian, who earned her fourth all-academic selection. Se-nior forward Stephanie Patterson led the Falcons in scoring with five goals and 10 points.

“This season, even though it didn’t end how we wanted it to, was still one I will always remember”, said Patterson. “We set several records and had an unbelievable start. I wish I could restart the season and do it all over again.”

“We kicked off the season with a phenomenal start,” Avjian said. “We had found our rhythm, were play-ing top caliber soccer, but most importantly having a blast doing it all. Now, I know I won’t be around next year to attend all the games, however, I will take

solace knowing that I will get to watch them from afar and amaze the country with their dedication to each other and to the beautiful game.”

Team MVPJunior forward Leah Bratt was named Air Force wom-en’s soccer team MVP for the 2012 season. Bratt started 16 of 17 games for the Falcons. She ranked second on the team with three goals and third with six points. The Falcons went 2-0-1 in games Bratt scored in. The junior scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 win over Montana.

Falcon LeadersSenior midfielder Stephanie Patterson led the Fal-cons in scoring with five goals and 10 points. Junior forward Megan Dozier led the team with four assists. 2013 Air Force Women’s Soccer • MW Info/MW 2012 Recap

On July 1, 1999, the Mountain West Conference began

official operations with a membership composed of

eight Division I-A institutions. The conference now

features the Air Force Academy, Boise State University,

Colorado State University, Fresno State University, Uni-

versity of Nevada, University of New Mexico, San Diego

State University, San Jose State, UNLV, Utah State and

University of Wyoming. The University of Hawaii is a

football-only member.

The first eight member schools collectively de-

cided to form a smaller conference and foster the tra-

ditional rivalries that were born in the ‘70s and ‘80s. BYU, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming

were charter members of the Western Athletic Conference when it was founded in 1962,

and Colorado State (1968), San Diego State (1978) and Air Force (1980), were long-stand-

ing members heading into the 1990s. UNLV joined the

group in 1996 and TCU in 2005. In 2011, the Mountain

West lost BYU and Utah but gained Boise State. Fresno

State, Nevada and Hawai’i (football only) joined the con-

ference in 2012-13, while TCU departed for the Big 12

Conference. San Jose State and Utah State join the

conference in 2013-14.

The MWC crowns champions in baseball, men’s and

women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross coun-

try, football, men’s and women’s golf, women’s soc-

cer, softball, women’s swimming & diving, men’s and

women’s tennis, men’s and women’s track & field, and women’s volleyball.

The top eight of 11 teams will be invited to the women’s soccer championship, Nov.

4-9, in Albuquerque, NM.

2013 Air Force Women’s Soccer • USAFA

The United States Air Force Academy offers a four-year program of

instruction and experience designed to educate, train and inspire men

and women to become officers of character, motivated to lead the

United States Air Force in service to our nation. Each cadet graduates

with a bachelor of science degree and a commission as a second

lieutenant in the Air Force.

Course of Study

Cadets are exposed to a balanced curriculum that provides the

knowledge, skills and responsibilities essential to a career Air Force

officer. The entire USAFA experience is integrated and mapped to

achieve a set of desired outcomes in every graduate.

The core academic curriculum includes courses in basic sciences,

engineering, social sciences and humanities. Cadets take additional

elective courses to complete requirements for one of 32 major areas

of study. About 50 percent of the cadets complete majors in science

and engineering; the remainder graduate in the social sciences and

humanities. Some of the most popular majors include management,

aeronautical engineering, foreign area studies, history, behavioral sci-

ence, civil engineering, astronautical engineering, electrical engineer-

ing and engineering mechanics.

Faculty Composition

The majority of the Academy’s faculty members, more than 500

total, are Air Force officers. They are selected primarily from career-

officer volunteers who have established outstanding records of perfor-

mance and dedication. Each has at least a master’s degree and more

than 55 percent have doctorates or other terminal degrees in their

field of study.

About 30 percent of the faculty are civilians who bring great depth

of disciplinary and educational expertise and provide academic stabil-

ity and continuity.

Faculty members are intensely focused on cadet learning as an

integral part of their officer development. The Air Force Academy has

been ranked No. 1 in the nation for the most accessible and involved

faculty. To provide greater contributions by a diverse

faculty, the Academy has several distinguished visiting professors

and endowed professors who serve one or more years. Officers from

other services, as well as officers from allied countries are also mem-

bers of the faculty. Distinguished civilian and military lecturers also

share their expertise with the cadets during the academic year.

Athletic Program

The Academy’s athletic program is designed to improve physi-

cal fitness, teach athletic skills and develop leadership qualities. To

achieve its goals, the Academy offers some of the most extensive

physical education, intramural sports and intercollegiate athletic pro-

grams in the nation. Cadets take at least three different physical edu-

cation courses each year.

Military Education and Training

An air, space and cyberspace-oriented military education, training

and leadership program begins with basic cadet training and continues

throughout the four years. Seniors are responsible for the organiza-

tional leadership of the cadet wing, while juniors and sophomores

seek to develop team and interpersonal leadership and instructional

skills. Cadets are projected into as many active leadership roles as

possible to prepare them to be effective Air Force officers.

Fundamental concepts of military organization -- drill, ethics, honor,

Air Force heritage and physical training -- are emphasized the first

summer during basic cadet training. Freshmen then study the military

role in United States society as well as the mission and organization of

the Air Force. Sophomores receive instruction in communication skills

and juniors study the combat and operational aspects of the Air Force.

The Academy offers courses in flying, navigation, soaring and para-

chuting, building from basic skills to instructor duties. Some cadets

may fly light aircraft with the Cadet Flying Team.

Summer training for cadets is divided into three, three-week train-

ing periods. There are a variety of programs available and each cadet

is required to complete two training periods each summer with leave

during the other period. All new cadets take six weeks of basic cadet

training in their first summer.

Combat survival training is a required three-week program during

cadets’ second summer. For other second-summer training periods,

cadets have options such as working with Airmen in an operational

unit at an Air Force installation, airborne parachute training, soaring or

basic free-fall parachute training.

During their last two summers, all cadets are offered leadership

training as supervisors or instructors in the summer programs listed

above.

Extracurricular activities also are an integral part of the education

program. The cadet ski club, drum and bugle corps, cadet chorale and

forensics are a few of the programs available.

Nominations

Nominations to the Academy may be ob-

tained through a congressional sponsor or by

meeting eligibility criteria in other categories of

competition established by law. For information

on admission procedures, write to HQ USAFA/RRS;

2304 Cadet Drive, Suite 200; USAF Academy, CO

History of

The Academy

In 1948, a board of leading civil-

ian and military educators was ap-

pointed to plan the curriculum for

an academy that would meet the

needs of the newly established Air

Force. The board determined that

Air Force requirements could not be

met by expanding the other service

academies and recommended an

Air Force Academy be established

without delay.

In 1949, then Secretary of the

Air Force W. Stuart Symington ap-

pointed a commission to assist in

selecting a site and on April 1, 1954,

President Dwight D. Eisenhower

authorized creation of the United

States Air Force Academy. After

considering 580 sites in 45 states,

the commission narrowed the

choice to three locations. The sum-

mer of 1954, Secretary of the Air

Force Harold Talbott selected a site

near Colorado Springs, Colo. Colo-

rado contributed $1 million toward

purchase of the property.

In July 1955, the first Academy

class entered interim facilities at

Lowry Air Force Base, Denver, while

construction began. It was suffi-

ciently completed for occupancy by

the cadet wing in late August 1958.

Initial construction cost was $142

million.

Women entered the Academy

on June 28, 1976, as members of

the class of 1980.

2013 Air Force Women’s Soccer • Director of Athletics

Dr. Hans J. Mueh is in his 10th year as the director of ath-

letics at the Air Force Academy. A retired Air Force brigadier

general, Mueh was vice dean of faculty for two years prior

to his retirement from active duty in the summer of 2004.

Mueh was heavily involved in Academy athletics before be-

coming director of athletics. He was the Academy’s faculty

athletics representative from 1996-2004 and was a long-time

member of the board of directors for the Air Force Academy

Athletics Association.

Since becoming the director of athletics, Mueh has led

the Academy to some remarkable feats. In 2007, the Acad-

emy was one of only three schools (Michigan State and Bos-

ton College) to reach post-season play in football (2007),

men’s basketball and ice hockey (2006-07). It marked the

first time a service academy has ever had a team compete

in the post-season in all three sports.

In addition, under Mueh’s watch the men’s basketball

team has played in another NCAA tournament and the Na-

tional Invitational Tournament’s Final Four. The ice hockey

team has won the conference championship and advanced

to the NCAA tournament five of the last six years. Mueh was

on the selection committee that hired current head coach

Frank Serratore and led the Academy’s move into the Atlan-

tic Hockey Association.

The football program, the Academy’s flagship sport, has

gone through a major overhaul under Mueh. He led the tran-

sition from the retirement of the legendary Fisher DeBerry

after 23 years at the helm to hiring current head coach Troy

Calhoun, a 1989 Academy graduate. Calhoun’s impact was

immediate, leading the Falcons to a 9-4 overall mark and

a second-place finish in the Mountain West Conference in

2007. The Falcons qualified for their first bowl game in

seven years, playing in the Armed Forces Bowl in 2007. The

program has gone to a school-record six consecutive bowl

games and averaged over 9,000 bowl tickets sold.

Mueh has been just as successful behind the scenes

with the administration of the department. Mueh restruc-

tured the department with an internal/external model that

has streamlined resources and made the department more

effective from top to bottom. In addition, the athletic depart-

ment made the transition to a federally-chartered non-profit

organization in the summer of 2013, which will lead to more

fund-raising opportunities.

Mueh was instrumental in the USAFA Endowment and

the announcement of the Holaday Athletic Center, an indoor

training facility. The $15 million facility was completed in

July 2011.

Mueh has also been active within the conference and

the NCAA. He was recently selected to be part of the NCAA

Division I Amateurism Cabinet and has been active on the

NCAA’s academics/eligibility compliance cabinet, the men’s

golf committee and the region 7 postgraduate scholarship

committee. Mueh has been equally active within the confer-

ence on various leadership committees. He is currently on

the awards and recognition committee and has previously

served on the joint council executive committee, and com-

mittees on championships, television and sportsmanship.

Before assuming his duties as vice dean at the Acad-

emy, Mueh was permanent professor and head of the de-

partment of chemistry at the Academy, a position he held

since October 1987 where he oversaw the annual design and

instruction of 25 undergraduate courses for 1,500 cadets an-

nually.

Mueh was born Jan. 8, 1944, in Celle, Germany, and emi-

grated to the United States in 1951. He entered the Air Force

in 1962 as a member of the Academy’s eighth graduating

class, and graduated with a bachelor of science degree in

chemistry in 1966. While at the Academy, Mueh was a two-

year letterwinner in soccer as a goalie. He still holds the

Academy record for saves in a game with 30, accomplishing

it twice in 1965 against North Carolina and Benedictine. In

his junior and senior years, Mueh helped the Falcons to the

Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Soccer League championship

and quarterfinal berths in the NCAA tournament. He was a

first-team all-league selection in 1965.

Following graduation, Mueh completed two assignments

in intelligence before attending the University of Wiscon-

sin where he earned his master’s degree in chemistry in

1970. He later earned a doctorate degree in chemistry from

Wisconsin in 1976 as a distinguished graduate. He has also

completed Squadron Officer School, Air Command and Staff

College and Air War College.

Between earning the two degrees, Mueh returned to the

Academy as an instructor in the department of chemistry

from 1970-72. He also served as assistant soccer coach and

played semi-pro soccer with the Aurora Internationals in

Denver during those two years, leading the Internationals

to the Colorado state title in 1971. He volunteered for duty

in Vietnam and served as an intelligence officer in Saigon,

Republic of Vietnam and at Nakhon Phanom RTAB, Thailand,

in 1972 and 1973.

After earning his doctorate degree, Mueh returned to the

Academy in 1976 as an associate professor of chemistry. He

remained at the Academy except for a stint in 1985-86 as

the special assistant for technical matters at the Defense

Intelligence Agency at the Pentagon.

In 1986, he assumed the position of acting head, depart-

ment of chemistry, before being selected for his position of

permanent professor and head of the department of chem-

istry in 1987. As faculty athletics representative, he was ac-

tive in both the Western Athletic Conference and Mountain

West Conference, and was the Academy’s representative

on the transition team to form the new MWC, the only fac-

ulty athletics representative on the team. He competes in

golf, racquetball, handball and tennis, and has promoted Air

Force Academy intercollegiate sports throughout his tenure,

beginning with work as chairman of the hockey eligibility

committee, officer representative to the men’s golf team and

five years as the officer representative to the football team.

Mueh is married to the former Sally Flax of Cincinnati,

Ohio. They have three children: Kristine, Kurt and Deborah.

Dr. Hans Mueh (right) accepts the invitation from Brant Ringler, executive director of the Bell Helicopter Armed

Forces Bowl, to compete in the 2012 bowl game after the Falcons defeated Hawai’i, Nov. 16, at Falcon Stadium.

2013 Air Force Women’s Soccer •Air Force Athletics

Air Force Athletics Few schools in the country have an athletic program as extensive

as the Air Force Academy’s.

The goals of the athletic program are to enhance the physical conditioning of all

cadets, to develop the physical skills necessary for officership, to teach leadership

in a competitive environment and to build character. There are three subdivisions

of the athletic program: intercollegiate athletics, intramurals and physical educa-

tion.

The intercollegiate program has 17 men’s and 10 women’s NCAA-sanctioned

teams, facing some of the top competition in the nation. Men’s teams are football,

baseball, basketball, ice hockey, cross-country, fencing, golf, gymnastics, indoor

and outdoor track, lacrosse, rifle, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, water polo

and wrestling. The Academy fields women’s teams in basketball, cross-country,

fencing, gymnastics, rifle, indoor and outdoor track, swimming and diving, soccer,

tennis and volleyball. In addition, the Academy sponsors two non-NCAA programs;

boxing and cheerleading.

The majority of the Academy’s men’s and women’s programs compete at the

NCAA Division I level in the Mountain West Conference. The Falcons compete in

this conference against teams from Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State,

Hawai’i (football only), Nevada, New Mexico, San Diego State, San Jose State,

UNLV, Utah State and Wyoming. All sports also compete against non-conference

opponents, including many nationally ranked teams.

The football team competes annually for the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy,

which is emblematic of service academy football supremacy. The Falcons have

won the trophy 18 times, which is more than any other academy.

The USAFA Cadet Field House is one of the most impressive buildings in the

country. It’s a modern, versatile structure with seemingly endless uses. The $5.6

million building is five stories high and 396 feet by 426 feet, the size of three foot-

ball fields laid side by side. The structure is divided into three areas--basketball

arena, ice hockey arena and multipurpose area. The three sections have a com-

bined seating capacity of more than 9,000.

Clune Arena seats 5,858. The Cadet Ice Rink has a seating capacity of 2,470,

while the multipurpose area seats 1,000 fans for track and field competitions.

The $4.1-million renovation to the Cadet Track Stadium, the outdoor home of the

Air Force track and field team, was completed in the fall of 2011 and is one of the

premier track and field facilities in the nation. The Holaday Athletic Center, a $15.5

million completely donor funded indoor training facility, was completed in July 2011.

The Cadet Fitness Center, a $9.5 million, Military Construction project, home of the

Air Force Academy’s fencing practice facility and aerobics/weight lifting facility

that contains a nearly 33-foot climbing wall, opened in May 2012.
