Good evening everyone and a warm welcome to The Welfare Ground, Emley for tonight’s tradit ional pre-season fr iendly against Huddersfield Town which is played annually for the Adrian Wright Memorial Trophy. We welcome their players, officials and supporters and no matter the result wish them a safe journey home after the game.

This fixture last year was played on Tuesday 31st July 2012 when the ‘Pewits’ ran out winners by 3 goals to 1. Ashley Flynn opened the scoring for his second goal of a season, which was to see his goal scoring feats take him to the top of the Baris Northern Counties East League Division 1 scoring chart, a position that he maintained to the end of season 2012/13. The other two goals were scored by the much-travelled Dean Wharam. The ‘Terriers’ sole reply was from Jordan Sinnott, all 4 goals coming in the opening 39 minutes. Although the second half didn’t live up to the highlights of the first the end result was a fair one. I would settle for the same score line tonight which will then give us an unprecedented 3 wins on the trot against Town. Get behind the lads tonight with as much vocal support as you can muster.

The 2012/13 season finished on a high when the first team managed to achieve 7th place, our highest position in non-league football since our re-formation in 2005. This was enhanced by a strong showing in achieving a last 32 place in a national football competition for the first time ever. Perhaps the FA Vase

provided some of the best moments of the season, it certainly did for me. Who can forget that special day at Barnoldswick and the after match celebrations, in particular on the team coach on our way home, which was an experience and easily the highlight of my short tenure as Chairman. If I had any doubts as to why I am involved with this football club of ours, that day provided all the answers....

...To this we must add the achievement of the U19’s who excelled to finish runners up in the Northern Alliance U19 League at their first attempt. Season 2013/14 promises greater things to come for the ‘Emley Family’ as can now be seen by the strength of the players vying for position in all 3 teams. The majority of last seasons First Team squad have been retained which can only bode well for a promotion push, whilst the Development Squad are to tread un-chartered waters in the Galaxy Lancashire East League which will see the likes of FC United of Manchester visiting the Welfare Ground. On top of this the club has enticed Richard Spychalski (formerly of Bay Athletic) to head up the U19’s this time round. Given Richard’s knowledge and contacts in the non-league game I am convinced that this appointment is progressive and can only be good for AFC Emley.

At the time of going to press all of the leagues, which our teams will be contesting, have yet to publish their fixtures for the coming season but the Northern Counties East League is to commence on Saturday 10th August. As in previous years, and due to the overlap with cricket, our first home game is likely to be mid-week. Fixtures for all teams will be published once they become available.

Because of our progression last term in the FA Vase we have been exempt from the early rounds and do not enter the competition until the second round proper in November. The FA Cup however kicks off here at the Welfare Ground on either Saturday 17th or Sunday 18th August at 3pm in the extra-preliminary round against Wigan Robin Park who play in the Northern Counties West League Premier Division.

For season 2013/14 why not try the ‘CazBar’ situated under the main stand? I can personally recommend the ‘Pukka’ pies, peas and chips and at a very reasonable price. Caz and Vicki do a splendid job and always with a friendly face and interesting banter. Likewise Sue and Sharon, in the ‘Sports Bar’ welcome you with excellent service and you can always find me propping up the corner of the bar. So if you have anything to say or require information

about our football club and it’s ‘smooth running’ please don’t hesitate to come forward and ask.

The work and organisation necessary to run and finance a non-league football club is non-stop, so if anyone would like to become involved in any way, large or small, or to help on match days etc you would be made most welcome. Please get in touch with any member of the committee.

Hopefully by now you will have noticed the new look to the AFC Emley match day magazine.

We want to continue the tradition of high quality content that previous editors Rob Dixon and Graham Siddons have estab l ished but , hopefully, in a easier to read format.

If you have any comments about the new look, please pass these on to any member of the committee.

As John has mentioned, there’s lots of effort that goes into running all aspects of the club, including this programme and the website. We’re always glad of a hand with photographs or match reports to spread the load around.


From the dug-out

The 2013/14 season is rapidly heading towards us and we are in fantastic shape. Thanks to the hard work of the Committee and our Management Team the club has established the foundations for success for the next 20 years. Not easy in a world which craves instant success!!

You may think that transfer warfare only takes place in the top tier of our beautiful game. Wrong. Its a compliment to this football club that we have had so much interest in the talented players we have here - and this interest has been fever pitch this summer. At the end of the day we don't have deep pockets and we are acutely aware of the threat posed by those that do.

Consequently our strategy is to strengthen from within - build our infrastructure to attract, develop and retain the very best local talent. Ultimately if we can help players achieve their maximum potential at higher levels then that constitutes success - so retention works but not as a barrier to progression. That does not mean I see us as a feeder club - as you will see our stated ambition is to move this club up through the football pyramid. We will do so in a way that is sustainable and not pay the price for short-term greed - too evident in today's society.

Our foundation was put down during last season and we are now starting to see the benefits. I am hugely motivated by our progress to date, which is critical to the long-term future of this wonderful football club.

So put simply I have two objectives for this season.

Firstly it is to achieve promotion and at worst (!!) a top four finish. No easy feat - we know how hard a task that will be - especially as we have never finished higher than 7th previously (last season). We have the two national competitions to look forward to as well and given our journey to the last 32 of the FA Vase last season we have been given a bye until the 2nd round by which our season will be in full flight! The FA Cup we haven't done ourselves justice in (unlike our predecessors). That is one competition I'd like to go further in this time - which won't be difficult given we haven't advanced past the first stage under my tenure. What will be difficult is our opponent, Wigan Robin Park, from the North West Counties PL. On our Vase run last season we experienced the likes of Congleton and Barnoldswick from that division so we are expecting a very tough examination - our incentive is a trip to near neighbours Ossett Town under the leadership of my mate Craig Elliott.

Secondly and of equal importance is the progression of our Development Squad and Under 19 teams. Our Development Squad under Joe Howson are from this season competing in the Lancashire League (East Division) against the likes of FC United of Manchester and Hyde as well as some local teams including, Ossett Town, Ossett Albion and Brighouse Town. We are going to run it as an Under 23 side with the aim of developing the very best talent for our first team.

Who is going to find this talent? I'm delighted that over the summer we managed to recruit the best coaching team in the area. Richard Spychalski, famed for his success over many years with Bay Athletic and currently in charge of the West Riding FA Representative XI has agreed to head up our Under 19's supported b y J o h n Pettinger, Johnny To w n e n d a n d Gavin Atherton. I ' m n o t e x a g g e r a t i n g when I say this is the biggest thing t h a t h a s happened to this c l u b s i n c e i t r e f o r m e d . Building on the great work from last season by Alan Semley & Steve Shorthouse I have already started to see the quality of these young lads on the senior stage. I guarantee you will see plenty of them this season and for years to come.

In terms of preseason it has been hectic (as usual). On the pitch we have been training hard since the second week of June and although punctuated by holidays the squad is definitely taking good shape. At the time of writing I have signed everyone I've wanted to retain from last season with the exception of three players who, despite interest from other clubs, I am fighting to keep. This is the reality of football and I have to say its part of what makes this job interest ing. By the t ime we play Huddersfield Town these will be resolved one way or the other. That said I've already added 9 new faces to the first team squad this season with possibly two or three more to come.

The quality of these lads is exceptional - after all most have come from professional coaching. They can all play and have adapted to the philosophy of playing the "Emley Way" instantly.

Off the pitch we have been busy too. I've already mentioned the significant progress with our Development Squad & Under 19s. In addition we are privileged to partner with

Sheffield United who have selected ourselves along with four other non-league clubs to form links with their academy. As well as having a friendly and hosting academy games we will have access to their facilities to attend coaching sessions. We may even find one or two good enough to make to pro-grade down

there - now that would underline our commitment to development!

P r e s e a s o n friendlies so far have done their job. The squad is shaping and the lads are getting s h a r p e r . O f c o u r s e t h e

Huddersfield Town fixture is the blue ribbon event and the one everyone wants to play in (including me). We've managed to win this fixture in the past two seasons although I'm assured that this season we will be given a much sterner test under the squad led by Steve Eyre. For me this is a key part of our preseason preparation on the field as well as the clear benefits it brings off it!

Huddersfield Town is our local club - despite our links with the Blades as mentioned above. We are proud to be associated with Huddersfield Town and our roots in Emley are about attracting the very best local football talent complimented by local support!

My last words are kept for the people around me, namely Roly Lanes and Pat Piearcey. Two top coaches whose insight and knowledge I respect greatly. With them by my side supported by the analysis of Stuart Dawson the players can expect the very best in coaching & development for another season. Combined with hard work and the growing support of our "Emley Family" success is only a matter of time.

The First Time

Town were preparing for their 2nd season in League Division 4, having narrowly missed out on immediate promotion the previous season when they had finished 5th. In comparison Emley, managed by former Town winger Kevin McHale, had lifted the Yorkshire League Championship and had also beaten Worksop Town to win the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup; both for the first time. This game had been arranged in recognition of this superb achievement. The Emley squad included three players, Finbar O’Sullivan, Mick Pamment and Stuart Greaves, who all had previous connections with Town. Chris Simpkin, Terry Dolan, Lloyd Maitland, Wayne Goldthorpe and Peter Ward all had significant first team experience for the visitors.

A crowd of 1592 turned up to the Welfare Ground and manager Tom Johnston’s concerns that the match could descend into a kicking match were allayed as Emley’s performance was full of the commitment and quality which had been displayed the previous season.

Emley took the lead in the 20th minute when Dennis Brookes’ low, fierce drive found the net. The crowd’s roar would have been heard throughout the village. The Cowshed Boy’s were silenced but only for a minute. Peter Ward swung across a well rehearsed cross for Everton Facey (father of Delroy) to slide it into the net for the equaliser.

Ten minutes after the interval the smiles were back on the Emley players and supporters faces. It was veteran Ian Kettlewell, who in his youth had turn down the chance to turn professional, who put them there! His shot took a deflection but deservedly found the net.

Peter Howey, one of the few Town players to impress came close to an equaliser with a shot that rattled the crossbar. As Emley legs began to tire towards the end there were repeated attempts on their goal but Emley managed to hold out for victory.

This is a copy of the front page of the programme issued on October 14th 1981. Emley had erected floodlights to ensure they could play in the inaugural season of the Northern Counties East League Premier Division the following season.

Emley went on to complete the League and Cup double and the Reserves matched that feat. Graham Cooper joined Town late in the 1983/84 season

Town were competing in Division 3 (now League1) and finished a disappointing 17th. Result: Emley 1 - 6 Town


Season in Review 2012-13

Changes in pre-season brought fresh optimism. Matt Thornton, Liam Schofield, Doran Jordan and Ashley Flynn joined the team and would all go on to be at the heart of Emley’s season, as would the returning Anthony Haigh in midfield. On the sidelines, manager Darren Hepworth’s attempt to bring a more professional approach saw him recruit Pat Piercey (right) as Head of Player Development and Stuart Dawson as Lead Analyst.

The optimism took an early hit, with the club dumped out of both the FA Cup (Chadderton, 0-2) and League Cup (Worsborough, 1-2) within three days. A trio of league wins against Hallam, Appleby and Dinnington - the latter two seeing Emley hit five - provided hope. But it was back down to earth with two stuttering home performances against Eccleshill (1-1) and Cleethorpes (2-3).

The inconsistency cont inued through September as Emley took 6 points from a possible 18. Meanwhile the FA Vase campaign kicked off with a victory over NCEL Premier Division Maltby Main by a single goal.

Emley’s bumper autumn started with 6 wins from 7 in October. The only defeat coming at home to Athersley, who were eventually promoted. Within that half-dozen victories was a 9-2 romp over Phoenix in the Sheffield and Hallamshire Senior Cup and another 1-0 ‘giant killing’ over Congleton of the North West Counties League Premier Division in the FA Vase 1st round proper.

After defeat to Albion Sports (1-3), another team in the midst of a successful promotion campaign, Emley went on a run of nine games without defeat all the way to the end of 2012 - netting 36 goals in the process. And while the league position improved, the cup runs also continued. Maltby were dumped out of another cup – 4-3 in the Senior Cup second round. But it was in the Vase where Emley created the headlines. After a last ditch winner from the

newly signed Brad Riley put Bottesford to the sword (3-2), Emley faced an away trip to NWCFL Premier side Barnoldswick Town (below) on December 8th. The manner of the 3-1 victory that day will live on in the memory of everyone connected with AFC Emley that made the journey that day.

After the highs of the Vase and the excellent run of form, come January the only New Year cheer was a 2-1 win over Worsborough sandwiched between two away defeats at Hallam and Shirebrook.

The first match of February was, finally, the delayed 4th round vase tie at home to Hadleigh United. It ended in a 1-0 defeat, but the result did not reflect the Emley performance, as the team did everything but score that afternoon. The team suffered a Vase hangover the following week with defeat to Knaresborough but then didn’t lose another league game until April.

The big game of the March, before the “White Easter”, was the visit of Stocksbridge Park Steels of the Northern Premier League. Another heroic effort from the Emley lads took the game into extra-time before a last gasp defeat. It was the highest ranked team Emley faced all season and another performance that merited a more positive result.

Fixture congestion meant Emley played 7 games in April – 5 of them away - and the season was extended by the NCEL into May. Emley’s chances of promotion were hit by a 3-3 Bank Holiday bonanza at Cleethorpes followed by a 4-1 drubbing at the hands of eventual champions Albion Sports. Draws at Appleby and Eccleshill extinguished the faint

hopes of a fruitful league campaign. Emley did finish in their highest ever position of seventh.

But there was time for one last high of the season. Mark ‘Willy’ Wilson (right) had returned to the Welfare Ground in February at the age of 42. To much fanfare and genuine affection from both the Emley faithful and the wider non-league community, he racked up his 900th non-league appearance in an 8-0 win over an under-strength Bottesford. The game also saw Ashley Flynn hit his 42nd goal of the season. Both incredible achievements.

Development SquadJoe Howson, Development Squad Manager

Welcome back to what hopefully will be another exciting season at the Welfare Ground.

Last season was a productive term for many reasons; both on a personal level - in my first season i n cha rge o f t he Development Squad and I like to think for many of the younger lads who played a big part in the West Riding County Amateur League games.

Towards the end of the season the average age of the squad was 18 years old and every player h e l d t h e i r o w n i n a p h y s i c a l a n d uncompromising league. This was key to what myself and Darren spoke about just over 12 months ago; bringing local quality through to be part of the club for the long term. This is also a prominent factor in our move to the Lancashire League so that development of younger players can be enhanced on quality pitches against quality opposition.

When the idea of entering the Lancashire League first came about a couple of people said immediately “Why? You'll get hammered every week?”. The focus this season will be to produce and develop first team players, no matter what their age, so although results are important they are not vital (this has taken 12 months for me to realise!) The desire to win will

be crucial in this developmental stage though and I'm confident that, as

Paul Day and Dev McIntosh did last season, players will flourish and get their opportunity in the NCEL.

The young prospects are outstanding at this club and you

will see some young faces more than knocking on the first team door.

The new Under 19's management team have already contributed to this and its a pleasure to have them on board.

Going on last season's Development Squad games you are guaranteed some action, so please come and support whenever possible. There are some great local fixtures with both Ossetts and Brighouse Town as well as notably larger development sides of FC United and Hyde in our league which all add to what promises to be a challenging season.

AFC Emley U19sRichard Spychalski, Under 19s ManagerI am pleased to be asked to be involved with the Under 19’s at Emley as manager. We h a v e b u i l t a f a n t a s t i c management team with Gav Ather ton as my Ass is tant Manager, John Pettinger as Head Coach, supported by Andrew Rushworth as coach, Jonny Townend as Player Liaison/Chief Scout and Liam Harrison as analyst and coach. The work and effort that the management team have already put in has been tremendous. A significant amount has been achieved in a professional and football focused manner in such a short time since we started and the team deserve a lot of credit for that.

Already I have been impressed by the quality and attitude of the players who have attended training sessions and the first friendly. It has been a pleasure to work with the players, and they are already starting to grasp the way I want the game to be played. We have had a large attendance of players ranging from the ages of 16 to 18. This definitely bodes well for the season ahead and for the future development of the squad.

My football philosophy is based on the principles of the 5 P’s – Position,

Possession, Passing, Pressing and Pace and all this has to be underpinned by a professional approach. I’ve seen enough already to appreciate that we can develop an academy of football and squad with the

players we have that can adopt those principles. This not only

gives me confidence for the season ahead but will also hopefully develop a

foundation for the club for the future with players progressing through to the First Team.

I’m definitely looking forward to the season ahead.

Game of the seasonEmley pulled off another fine “giantkilling” performance to progress to the 4th round of the FA Vase with a 3-1 win at Barnoldswick Town. The North West Counties Premier side went into the game as favourites but Emley had other ideas and recorded their 3rd vase win over higher level opposition this season.

Chances were few and far between in the opening stages of the game, as both sides kept it tight in defence. Quarter of an hour had passed before the first meaningful chance as Harry Thompson set up Neil Chapman who fired just wide of the target. Then player manager Stewart Aidrie fired into the side netting from close range after a good spell of pressure by the home time.

Emley fought their way back into things and Flynn saw a shot deflect wide after good build up play by Aaron Joseph and Anthony Haigh. Flynn did make the breakthrough soon after on the half hour mark sliding in to connect with a cross from Haigh to stab the ball through the legs of home ‘keeper Alexander Woodcock.

Neither side managed to create any serious threat through the remainder of the half with defences once again well on top. The second half got off to a flying start however as the visitors raced out of the blocks.

Emley appeared to still be in the dressing rooms as Mark Threlfall drove straight through their defence before unleashing a brilliant low strike from the edge of the box to level things up with just 19 seconds on the clock gone in the second half.

Any team talks that manager Daz Hepworth might have given about frustrating or containing the home team were now thrown out of the window and the game began to open up.

Emley responded with Steven Kenworthy intercepting the ball in midfield before finding Flynn, who then squared the ball across the edge of the box back to Kenworthy who curled an effort just wide of the top corner.

Barlick then enjoyed their best spell of play kicking into the “Sewer End” of the ground where most of their fans were located. Emley

keeper Luke Herriott made a good double save firstly as Threlfall headed an Airdrie cross goalbound, then bravely blocking the loose ball at the feat of Chapman.

Lewis Jordan should have done better from close range but fired wide for Barlick before Herriott made his best save of the game getting down low to stop a well placed Airdrie header across the face of goal.

Hepworth introduced Doran Jordan for Levi Maturine with 25 minutes to go and his pace succeeded in putting the home team on the back foot.

Flynn’s second goal and 27th of the campaign came on 74 minutes, fed by a beautifully weighted ball by Kenworthy he took a touch before slotting the ball between Woodcock and his near post.

The pair combined minutes later as Emley took control of the game. Flynn squared for Kenworthy but his angled drive forced a brilliant 1 handed save from Woodcock. The keeper then made another top class save, this time from a Haigh shot from the edge of the box.

Woodcock was powerless to prevent Emley’s 3rd goal which came in the 80th minute. Jordan slotted home from close range after an excellent piece of play involving Kenworthy, Flynn and Haigh.

Emley were now in a dominant mood and could have easily extended their lead further. Kenworthy chipped onto the roof of the net and Flynn was a denied a hat trick by another Woodcock save.

In a game which could have gone either way Emley eventually triumphed by displaying greater desire and taking their chances. This was an excellent all round performance from the team and difficult to single out an individual performance with each member of the team playing a vital role at times.

8/12/12: Barnoldswick 1 - 3 AFC Emley, FA Vase 3rd Round


History of AFC EmleyThe original Emley AFC's history stretches back as far as 1903. They were somewhat successful in Yorkshire non-league football over the years, winning several championships but were perhaps most famous for their FA Cup run in the later part of the 1990s which saw them playing against West Ham United.

Things started to go wrong for the original club in 2000 after the Northern Premier League announced new ground regulation rulings. As Emley were unable to improve their ground, they moved to Wakefield to avoid expulsion from the league.

The move and name change to Wakefield & Emley F.C. in 2003, alienated many Emley fans who had supported the club throughout the years. The final straw came when the Northern Counties East League discontinued its reserve league as the reserve team had continued to play at the old Welfare Ground in Emley even after the first team move to Wakefield.

The disbanding of the Reserve Team lead to several fans and former members forming the current club in the name of A.F.C. Emley in 2005, moving back to their home village. During their first season, the club finished third in the West Yorkshire League Division One. A year later the club was successful in an application to become members of the Northern Counties East Football League Division One. Joint managers Nicky Bramald and Ray Dennis stood down at the end of the 2007-08 season after the club struggled to find its feet at the higher level.

For the 2008-09 season, AFC Emley appointed ex-professional footballer Ian Banks as 1st

team manager assisted by Grant Crookes. The club occupied a place in the top five of the league for most of the season but inconsistent form towards the end of the season saw them finish in 8th place.

In 2009/10 the team once again finished in 8th p o s i t i o n a f t e r a promising first half of the season. They d id however enjoy runs to the quarter finals in the League and Sheffield Cups defeating Unibond League side Worksop Town on the way. The newly formed reserve side performed better however finishing 3rd in the WRCL 2nd division and winning the League Cup under the leadership of Darren Hepworth.

Emley parted company with Banks and Crookes i n M a y 2 0 1 0 a n d a p p o i n t e d u p a n d coming manager Darren Bland to the post as they

looked to build and challenge for Promotion. Bland had a mixed start to his tenure with a number of players leaving the club, requiring him to draft in new personnel. A string of disappointing results in the league was contrasted with decent form in the cups and victories over higher-level opponents Runcorn Linnets and Winterton Rangers.

Bland resigned in November 2010 to take up a coaching role with Sheffield United’s academy. Reserve team manager Darren Hepworth was asked to step up to manage the First Team and immediately brought stability to the side. A string of good performances propelled his side from the bottom 3 up into the top half of the table and ultimately completed the season in yet another 8th place.


For season 2011/12 Hepworth enlisted a new assistant in the shape of the vast ly experienced Roly Lanes and the pair endured a turbulent season losing key players through injury and suspension but finished strongly to end up in 10th place.

2012/13 saw fresh optimism in the club with the arrival of Pat Piercey as Head of Player Development and the introduction of Stuart Dawson as Lead Analyst as Hepworth strove to bring a more professional approach to First Team management. This was underlined by the appointment of Joe Howson to manage the development squad and the formation of an Under 19 side under the leadership of Alan Semley. The season saw many highs including a best ever 4th Round Proper appearance in the FA Vase, the away win at Barnoldswick in the 3rd Round being a day which will live long in the memories of those who were present, together with another best in the form of a 7th place finish in the NCEL 1st Division. On an individual note, striker Ashley Flynn finished as the division’s leading scorer with 42 goals, 7 ahead of his nearest challenger.

2013/14 brings more changes as the Development Squad will now play in the Lancashire Football league enabling them to meet a higher standard of opposition and Richard Spychalski is to take over as U19 Manager, assisted by John Pettinger, Johnny Townend and Gavin Atherton.

The big news of the close season, however is the announcement that AFC Emley are one of 5 non-league clubs chosen to enter into an informal partnership with League 1 side Sheffield United. Emley will benefit from players joining them from Sheffield United's Academy while there will also be opportunities for AFC Emley's coaching staff to observe and learn from their counterparts at Bramall Lane.
