Congressman Mark Amodei will speak.

JW Marriott Indianapolis BIENNIEL
Indianapolis, Indiana CONVENTION
Our Host City Welcome to Indianapolis (friends call it Indy!) A city known for fast cars and some blockbuster events, Indianapolis also
boasts a flourishing culinary scene, thriving cultural institutions, great neighborhoods and so much more.
From the moment you land at the airport, which has received high ratings for everything from security lines to baggage
claim, you will find a city that knows how to show its guests a good time.
A 15 minute cab ride from the airport will get you downtown, and one of the first sites that might catch your eye is the
stunning blue glass of the JW Marriott Indianapolis – our host hotel for the convention. The JW Indianapolis is located in
the heart of this vibrant and walkable city.
Urban explorers can stroll to a collection of monuments and memorials rivaled only by Washington, D.C. Be sure to get a
photo at Monument Circle, the physical and spiritual heart of the city, and take your children or grandchildren to the
Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, the largest children’s museum in the world.
No visit to the city would be complete without a visit to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The Indianapolis 500 is the
world’s largest single day sporting event. In 1909, 3.2 million bricks were laid to create the track, giving it its name – “The
Brickyard.” The track is so large that Churchill Downs, Yankee Stadium, the Rose Bowl, the Roman Coliseum and Vatican
City all can fit inside the iconic oval.
Enjoy your visit and remember, if you ever need help, just find a local. Hoosier Hospitality is what they are known for,
and the citizens of Indianapolis are always eager to share the best of their city with you.
Our Convention The convention will be one of the largest Republican gatherings this year and one of the first Republican events of the 2020 election season. Convention attendees will have the opportunity to: Hear from Republican elected officials and leaders Receive valuable training to make them more effective leaders and campaigners Network with other Republicans from across the nation

AMERICANISM
June, 2019. Not much was made of it, but this is a banner year for we women voters. 100 years ago, in June of 1919, the 19th Amendment to the U. S. Constitution was passed, reading: “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.” I mean, zowie. I’ll bet you are unaware that prior to the Revolutionary War, and for a few years afterward, women were allowed to vote, and then that right was, state by state, revoked, so that by 1807, no suffrage for women
was allowed anywhere.
I’ll also bet that you might recall that Wyoming gets the credit for being the first state after the revocation to allow women’s unrestricted suffrage, but really, Kentucky deserves some of the glory. In 1838, 31 years PRIOR to Wyoming, it granted those of the fairer sex who were heads of households voting privileges.
A few other obscure figures don’t get much notice, either. Take Senator Aaron A. Sargent, Republican, from California, for instance. He, brave soul, first introduced (1878) a federal amendment to allow women into the voting booth. His action followed much ado and a Su-preme Court ruling that the previously passed 14th Amendment did not and could not count where females were concerned. Everyone else, yes. But heaven forbid that WOMEN should vote. It is his amendment that wended its way through debate and debacle and defeat for more than 40 years before the U. S. Congress became “enlightened” enough to realize women deserved to participate in this Democratic Republic as well.
Another Republican woman, about whom you undoubtedly know very little if anything, a feisty, determined, ambitious, very civic minded woman named Jeannette Rankin had a great deal to do with that final victory. She happened to be working in Washington State when the question of women’s suffrage arose and she spearheaded the suffragist strate-gies to see that a yes vote carried the day. She then went home to Montana, worked her po-litical magic there and also got that state to vote to allow women to vote, and then got her-self elected to the U. S. House of Representatives.
Rankin was the very FIRST woman to be elected to congress EVER. Not that she was what we all might consider a “perfect” candidate: she was a “progressive,” and an extreme paci-fist, and is also famous for being the ONLY person in congress to ever have voted against both WWI and WWII (when she was serving her 2nd term from 1940 to 1942!). And, mind you, her first term was in 1916 and ended two years later, but not before the Committee on Wom-an Suffrage that she headed up issued a report endorsing the proposed Constitutional Amendment on women’s right to vote.
“How shall we answer the challenge, gentlemen?” Rankin asked the room full of men. “How shall we explain to them the meaning of democracy if the same Congress that voted to make the world safe for democracy refuses to give this small measure of democracy to the wom-en of our country?”
Jeannette Rankin stands out as a tireless fighter for what she saw as what was right. She broke boundaries for women and we owe her our thanks.
