Seeing God in All the Right Places

By Rabbi Susan Grossman

I knew I was in trouble when my car started making an unusual whirring sound one Thursday. I was running between meetings and appointments and didn’t really have time to deal with my

car. But David and I had to drive up to New York right after Shabbat for a family wedding so I took my car to the dealer. When I heard the mechanic’s report, my exasperation turned to appreciation – to God. The alternator was almost gone. The radiator was seriously leaking. I faced some hard choices about what to do with our faithful car that had carried us on so many adventures for more than a decade. However, if I had not heard that whirring, if I had not taken it into the shop, the car probably would have seized up on our trip to New York, perhaps in traffic on 95. I had a lot to be thankful for, to thank God for! It wasn’t a miracle on the scale of the splitting of the Red Sea but the timing was certainly fortuitous for keeping me and my family safe and sound. Sometimes God’s hand can be seen in the great miracles that surround us, the birth of a child, the rebirth of a forest after a fire, an eclipse or a flaming sunset that reminds us of the glory of Creation. Sometimes God’s hand can be seen in those miracles that appear as happy coincidences. Terrible things do happen to good people, mostly because we live in a broken and imperfect world. But a lot of good things happen too. Whenever they do, I thank God, the source of all that is good.

May summer bring us all a little slower pace to our lives. May we be better able to make the time to open ourselves to the good that surrounds and sustains us. And may we, thus, come to see God in all the right places, in all the good that happens, even if it is sometimes cloaked in the inconvenient or downright difficult more often than we would wish.

Have a safe and meaningful summer!

Summer Shabbat Soirees 2017

Beth Shalom's 2017 Summer Shabbat Soirees are ready to roll! Beginning July 14th, we will once again be getting together in the homes of congregants on Friday nights for potluck (kosher dairy/pareve) dinner-and-a-service activities, our synagogue’s delightful laid-back summer celebrations to welcome Shabbat.

Hosts will be announced in the e-Scroll two to three weeks before each Soiree. (For those who don’t receive the e-Scroll, consider signing up, or check with the synagogue office periodically.) Guests must then contact EACH host to sign up in advance (no later than the Tuesday of that

week) and work out what they will bring.

For guests who don’t keep kosher (and/or cook), there are plenty of tasty commercially-prepared foods that are kosher, even in ordinary supermarkets. If you want to cook, we have developed FAQs on how (and suggestions on what) to prepare kosher dairy and pareve foods in a non-kosher kitchen. It is easier than you might think – but, as there are different standards for keeping kosher, hosts have final say about what may or may not be brought into their homes.

For those who want only the Shabbat service, you are welcome to join the Soirees after dinner because there will not be a service at the synagogue on the nights we hold Soirees. Please contact the hosts so they can make sure they have enough chairs and books.

A message from the Presidents

Fellow congregants, as I write my final Presidential message, I would like to highlight some of the ways in which our community has strengthened our roots during a year filled with growth, change and positive momentum. At the conclusion of last year’s Annual Meeting, the Board began to outline what we would be doing this year. You listened carefully to our plea last year regarding the financial challenges our congregation has been facing and came through with such generosity and support for our Annual Appeal. Moreover, we increased the number of givers to the campaign. It is this fact that speaks loudest of all because it communicates your increasing confidence in this institution and in its leaders.

When I began my 3rd and final term as President, I envisioned a continued era, a time filled with mutual trust, open dialogue and staff congeniality; a period where an increasing band of committed congregants would once again bond together with our lay leaders, our magnificent clergy, our inspired staff and teachers. And that fellow congregants is exactly what has happened.

In many respects, it’s all about connections: connections to the Jewish people, connections to a Jewish Community, to our beloved congregation, and to Eretz Yisrael – the Land of Israel. Our job as a synagogue is to help you and others make these connections.

This is your synagogue. This is your community. Beth Shalom can be a dynamic place when energized people want to make things happen. I encourage all of you to step forward to become more involved, even if it’s only one more thing than you did last year. And of course, I encourage you to support next year’s Annual Appeal campaign. If each of us gave…gave just a little bit more than this year our financial stability as a congregation would increase exponentially.

Since this is the last opportunity I’ll have to address the entire congregation, I want to publicly thank all of you for the opportunity you have given me to serve as your president. The personal reward and satisfaction it has given me has been beyond what I could have ever imagined. What I have enjoyed the most is the warmth and genuine friendship from so many of you. Though my days as President are winding down I will continue to work hard at the wonderful opportunity you have given me to help make Beth Shalom the very best synagogue we can be.

I wish to thank my fellow officers: Barbara Block, Tammy Lawrence, Eric Gorny, Steven Camassar and Jill Oletsky. You all have truly given me a memorable year. I also want to thank all members of the board for their hard work and dedication. I know Beth Shalom is in good hands. I welcome Irva Nachlas-Gabin as our new incoming President and know she will be exceptional. I also want to thank Rabbi Grossman for her incredible guidance and assistance these past three years. Working closely with the Rabbi has strengthened my respect and friendship for her. I also want to thank Cantor Walters for his support, ruah and friendship. I also want to welcome

Jessica Schultz to her new position as Synagogue Administrator and I know she will be awesome. Lastly, I want to thank my beautiful wife, Mary Okada, for her support during the past 3 years. I quite literally could not have performed my duties as President without her. She is my everything!! She is also quite happy about having her husband back in her life. Shalom and thanks. Alan Zeman, Immediate Past President, Beth Shalom Congregation

**************************

And from incoming President, Irva Nachlas-Gabin

Our Congregation is looking forward to a positive and productive year.

As in-coming President, I want to take a moment to thank the many people who make Beth Shalom the Congregation what it is. To all who of you who volunteered your time, talents, energy, and enthusiasm during the past year – Thank You. To the members of the Beth Shalom Board, whether you are continuing in your position, taking on a new position, or retiring – Thank You. To our Clergy, Staff, and Religious School teachers, who demonstrate their dedication to our congregation every day – Thank You. To those who have supported Beth Shalom through the Annual Appeal and your donations – Thank You.

And mostly – to Alan Zeman, our out-going president, who has been kind, open-minded, and inspirational – Thank You.

I am happy to be coming in as President at this time. We are starting the year strong, with a new Synagogue Administrator, Jessica Schultz, a second year of our revised Religious School under Dr. Louis Nagel’s tutelage, and a new Youth and Family Coordinator, Tracey Pyser. There is also the anticipation of the new wing on the building, and a creative and enthusiastic team of leaders on the Board ready to move Beth Shalom forward and upward. As always, we encourage our Congregants to take part: bring your new ideas and talents to the fore, and participate to perpetuate the Beth Shalom programs that serve our community, and create new projects that will further our mission as a Conservative congregation and a Family. Let me hear from you. You can email me at [email protected], or call on my home phone. Irva Nachlas-Gabin, President, Beth Shalom Congregation

Education by Dr. Louis Nagel Contact Dr. Nagel at [email protected] or call (410) 531-5115 x322

Onward and Upward I recently facilitated a discussion with the board of directors of the Conservative movement’s education professionals’ organization. The subject was the purpose of Jewish education. Colleagues spoke of teaching “knowledge and skills,” creating Jewish

experiences, making “being Jewish… personal(ly) meaningful,” and facilitating “Jewish continuity.” In my closing comments, I referenced a quote from one of our colleagues, who wrote, “For Jewish learning to be both meaningful and relevant it must empower Jews (and fellow travelers) to thrive – in their personal success and happiness, in being more socially connected to each other and their communities - and better equipped to make the world a better place” (David Bryfman). I welcome your thoughts on the subject. For me, I chose this statement because it articulates the reason I took up this profession and defines the goal toward which I strive.

At this writing, I am at the in-between of wrapping up one school year and preparing for the next one. I reflect on a year of abundant highlights and successes for our school. Some of those standouts: the Upper School New York trip, Hanukkah Extravaganza (and the encore musical performance of the 3rd-5th graders at Harmony Hall), the 6th and 7th grade Shabbatons, the 1st and 2nd grade family education programs and Kindergarten Consecration. Those were just the bigger, more public events. The mortar holding them together were the wonderful children, parents and teachers who made documents and program plans burst with constructive energy. I look forward to building on our learning community’s achievements in the year ahead.

Beth Shalom and the Religious School is a blessed synagogue community. There is exceptional leadership from the Religious School Committee, chaired by Marcia Vilk. The Youth Committee, chaired by Stephanie Caplan, facilitated many of our successes this year starting with High Holy Days programming and closing with our End-of-the-Year outdoor activities. Sisterhood and Men’s Club are both highly supportive of our program. Sisterhood underwriting enabled us to expand our cultural arts programs (art and drama classes) as well as funding the siddurim presented to our third graders. Men’s Club offered technology funds, teacher support, and a hands-on presence working with our 7th graders to prepare the Holocaust candles for distribution and the grillwork for our June 4th barbecue.

We are also blessed with a Rabbi who is highly engaged in the life of the Religious School. She has an unparalleled

appreciation, understanding and vision for the role the educational program plays in the congregation and in the Jewish future. Her interactions with students at all age and grade levels, greeting children as they arrive for class, and her ongoing programs demonstrate that extraordinary commitment. I also look forward to the year ahead with the partnership of my fellow staff members, Jessica Schultz, Ruthann Klem, Laynie Tell and Nayeli Ruiz.

The Talmud says, “A person must either climb up or climb down.” The same holds for collective efforts. I am confident that our education program is on an upward trajectory, an agent for empowerment and making the world a better place.

Join us once a month during the summer for our Watermelon Wednesdays and cool down with some delicious watermelon,

story time, and some songs at Beth Shalom! No registration required, no fee - Just watermelon, stories, songs, and smiles! (In case of inclement weather we will meet inside

the building) 4:30 PM on the front lawn

Sisterhood and Men’s Club News

Sisterhood News

A synagogue can sometimes feel like a big place, and it can be hard to find your niche and feel like a

vital member of the community. Each of us has been in that position at some point in our relationship with Beth Shalom. We want to be able to walk in, see people we know, and feel engaged and energized.

We think about attending something, but then worry that we won’t know anyone or we won’t feel comfortable. How do you bring about that sense of belonging? It happens with every hello, every encounter, every person you sit next to. Attend an event. Come hear a speaker. Introduce yourself to someone in the next seat. Help out with a program. You will soon be able to walk into the building at any time and see people you know. And you will feel at home.

Sisterhood would love your input and help in shaping our upcoming program year. We are moving to a team model, and our board is becoming a steering committee. We have two fall events we left open for planning so that new people can help shape the programming. Come join us in this venture. Attend a steering committee meeting. Come to the open house and vote on a trip destination. If you have ideas or would like to get involved with planning, we would love to hear from you. Contact us at: [email protected]

Have you heard that Sisterhood is retiring from Kiddushes?

No! Really? Will we still have Kiddushes and Onegs?

Absolutely. We will continue to enjoy noshes together after Shabbat services and holidays.

You haven’t advertised for a house elf. So who will prepare the Kiddushes and Onegs?

We hope everyone will pitch in. We are forming a Hospitality Crew that will oversee the planning and be the backbone of the preparation team. Additionally, if every congregant volunteers to help even just once a year, we will easily be able to fulfill the need. Our wonderful office staff will continue to play a major role as well.

My child has a Bat/Bar Mitzvah coming up. Should I be worried?

Rest assured that you will still be able to have a full luncheon or nosh Kiddush.

If Sisterhood won’t be sponsoring the food anymore, will we just have bread and water?

Challah on Shabbat is a delight. But you will also see a variety of other food similar to what we’ve always enjoyed.

Food doesn’t grow on trees (well, maybe it does). But seriously, where will the money come from to pay for all that delightful food?

It will come from celebrations and commemorations of birthdays, anniversaries, yahrzeits, graduations, and other special events. It will come from sharing and generosity and from the goodness of our hearts. In other words, we’ll be looking for sponsors.

Will sponsors have to buy and prepare the food too?

No. Sponsors will donate the money, but the Hospitality Crew will do the shopping and preparation. Of course, sponsors are welcome to pitch in if they’d like.

How can I sponsor?

Stay tuned. Details will be forthcoming. But if you already know of a date you’d like to sponsor, let the office know.

If preparing Kiddushes is so rewarding, why is Sisterhood retiring from it?

Sisterhood, in its capacity as a group, would like to focus its energies in other ways. However, you will still see lots of Sisterhood members helping out with the Hospitality Crew. The group is retiring, but its members will still be helping out as individuals . . . because it IS rewarding.

Calling all volunteers

Join our new Hospitality Crew. We are looking for volunteers to:

Communicate with B’nai Mitzvah families about their Kiddush choices

Make shopping lists
