"Affliction.... Worketh for Us"

"For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, workethfor us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; While we look not at the things which are seen, but at thethings which are not seen (2 Cor. 4:17-18):

It is easy to see be these words that Paul had a clear visionof God. Afflictions were something to which Paul was wellacquainted. Stripes, beatings, stoning, shipwrecks, perils ofrobbers, perils of his contemporaries, of heathen, perils inthe city, in the wilderness, in the sea, and among falsebrethren. In weariness, pain, hunger and thirst, and often inprison. Yes, Paul knew affliction, but more importantly heknew God. He did not merely know about him, but he knewHim.

It was Paul who let us know that allthings work together for good to themthat love God. Its okay to seeaffliction, who can help but see it inthis hour of trouble in which we live, but we need to as Isaiah did see alsothe Lord high and lifted up. It’s onlyby seeing him, and his sovereignty thatwe can do as Paul admonished us, andrejoice in affliction, rejoice intribulations, and see that all of thisworketh for us.

Out of Tribulation comes patience, which leads us toconfidence. Afflictions when compared to eternity, are seenworking for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight ofglory. Sorrows of the soul are working toward that perfectpeace of mind that means its transformation into perfectharmony with the mind of Christ.

G. Campbell Morgan well said, The Christian man must notsay what cannot be cured must be endured; but rather itmust endured, because it is the cure. Our afflictions, ourtroubles, our trials must be cheerfully borne, because theyhave the strange power to make us whole and make usstrong, and lead us in to victory and to glory.

Christianity is not a dour pessimism that submits, but acheerful optimism that cooperates because it sees that it isthrough suffering and weakness that joy and triumph mustcome. The Lords promise is your sorrow shall be turnedinto joy. Hebrews speaking of our Lord said. Who for thejoy that was set before him endured the cross, despising theshame. The Lord saw a deep valley of sorrow, but just

beyond that there was joy greatenough to cause him to endure thesorrow in order to reach the joy.

Be encouraged weary pilgrim anddont quit in the sorrow because joyawaits you just beyond the trial.Weeping may endure for a night, butjoy cometh in the morning.

We believe in God the Father Almighty. Maker of heavenand earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only begotten Son, who wasconceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the virgin Mary, sufferedunder Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried andarose on the third day according to the Scriptures, afterwardsascended into heaven where He is now seated at the right handof God the Father, from whence He is come again to judge thequick and dead.

We believe in Water Baptism and that it should beadministered to every believer according to the Scriptures givenby St. Matthew 3:17;28:19; St. Mark 16:15; Acts 8:36-38. Weteach that the Blood of Jesus Christ cleanseth from all sin, andsanctifies the believer, thus making him or her eligible to re-ceive the gift of the Holy Ghost which is given to them thatobey (Acts 5:32) and the evidence of such experience shall beaccording to Acts 2:4.

We believe in the resurrection of the dead and the Commu-nion of the saints, the Lords Supper and washing the saintsfeet. Hello folks! May God bless each andevery one of you. Oh, how thankful

I am to be a child of God. I can’t reallyexpress myself as to how glad I am to beHis child. I hope that my expressions andemotions are sufficient to show my lovefor God.

In Luke 10:1, we read that Jesus ap-pointed "other seventy" beside the twelvedisciples to help Him. He sent them outby two’s to heal the sick and fulfill thewill of Jesus. They went out, casting outdevils and doing a marvelous work. Theycame back and with rejoicing, said, "Lord, even the devils are subject to us throughthy name (vs. 17)." Jesus replied: "...Ibeheld Satan as lightning fall fromheaven. Behold, I give unto youpower to tread on serpents and scor-pions, and over all the power of theenemy: and nothing shall by anymeans hurt you (Lu 10:18)."

I personally don’t think that treading onserpents and scorpions should be takenliterally. The reason I feel this is becausethey never did literally tread upon scor-pions or serpents in the book of Acts. Tounderstand the Word of God , you mustunderstand that there are figures ofspeech that have a spiritual meaning. Forinstance, read Isaiah 9:18-21: "For wick-edness burneth as the fire: it shall de-vour the briers and thorns, and shallkindle in the thickets of the forest, andthey shall mount up like the lifting upof smoke.

Through the wrath of theLORD of hosts is the land darkened, and the people shall be as the fuel ofthe fire: no man shall spare his brother.

And he shall snatch on theright hand, and be hungry; and heshall eat on the left hand, and theyshall not be satisfied: they shall eatevery man the flesh of his own arm"Surely you don’t think that means burn-ing humans for fuel as you would burnwood! You don’t think that means eatinghumans arms and hands do you? Somuch for that, that will do for you snake-handling jerks, wherever you are!

Anyway, back to Luke 10. The LordJesus in a sense meant, hold it! Hold itthere! "Notwithstanding in this rejoicenot, that the spirits are subject untoyou; but rather rejoice, because yournames are written in heaven." Thisought to slow down you "oneness" mis-informed folks who teach you are notsaved till you have been baptized in wa-ter, filled with the Holy Ghost and speakin tongues. You might need to read Acts19, where the twelve believers were bap-tized after they were filled with the HolyGhost. In all of Acts and the New Testa-ment, everything we do or they did, wasin the name of Jesus.

We baptize as Jesus said to do in Mat-thew 28:19: "Go ye therefore, and teachall nations, baptizing them in the nameof the Father, and of the Son, and ofthe Holy Ghost:" Yet at the same timewe do all that do in Jesus name, meaningthat we do it under or by the authority ofJesus. In Luke 10:17, the disciples castout devils in Jesus name, meaning theyhad their authority from Jesus.

I don’t have the time to argue or fussabout it, for Jesus said to do it that way. Those seventy disciples had their namesin Heaven way before Pentecost, so don’twrite or call me to fuss with me about it.The "oneness" are not the gate-keepersto the eternal city of God.

Jesus is the Boss, yes, the eternal andeverlasting Boss! He said it, I believe it!My name is in the Book of Life and no

The best way to keep our kids out of hot water is to putsome dishes in it.

We spend the first twelve month’s of our children’s livesteaching them to walk and talk, and the next twelve yearstelling them to sit down and be quiet.

You know that your children are getting older when theyquit asking where they came from and don’t want you toknow where they are going.

"Affliction.... Worketh for Us"FROM PAGE ONE

The Lord never promised that being a Christian wouldalways be fun. He said in Matt. 16:24, "If any man willcome after me, let him deny himself take up his cross, andfollow me." Being a disciple is taking up the cross, beingfaithful, steadfast, immovable and enduring.

Many people serve God as long as they enjoy it. But whenthe fire is no longer falling they move on to greener pas-tures, searching for new thrills- as if serving God was anamusement park or some kind of a divine Disneyland. Jesuswept in the garden, great drops of sweat turning to blood, staining his blessed face. He held in his hands, the cup ofour sins. He groaned in his spirit, and cried to the father, ifit be possible let this cup pass from me. Theodore Cuylersaid that "God sometimes washes the eyes of His childrenwith tears in order that they may read aright His providenceand His commandments."

If Christ would have had to enjoy drinking that cup wewould have all been in hell. Who for the joy that was setbefore him. He was pressing through the dark valley ofsorrow to reach a joy that would compensate the trial ofdeath.

Afflictions worketh for us. We dont enjoy affliction, butwe endure hardness as a good soldier" and in "everythinggive thanks, because we know( although we dont alwaysunderstand how) that all things work for our good.

What a wonderful promise that no matter how bad it seems, ultimately it is for our good. God cannot lie, because hisword is a creative word. If it was not so before he said it,the moment he says it, it becomes truth. For instance, whenthe world was dark he said, "Let there be light: and therewas light." His word assures us, Satan meant it for evil, butGod meant it for good.

"Affliction... worketh for us." And "In all these things we aremore than conquerors..." These are the revelations of aclear vision of God, we worship in the trial, because weknow its for our good, and God is still in control.

Situations that lead others to distress and despair onlybecome the wings of hope and the inspiration of a song, when we see God clearly.

In this world of trouble, troublemakers, trials and tribulations, let us also see the Lord. George MacDonald said it right thatour afflictions are but the shadow of God’s wings.

Evangelist Mark LoweryMarion, AL

earthly man can take it out. As long as I keep faith in Him, Hewill keep me! Am I worthy? No, but He promised that Hewould keep me and I am trusting that promise. If you get savedand stay saved, you will always be saved.

My friend John Brewer Jr. who is the pastor of Oneta Holi-ness Church, here in Oklahoma, talked to a black preacher inWichita, KS, who rode a bicycle to the hospital for visitation.Bro. Jr. asked him, "Reverend, How do you admit membersinto your church?" That black brother replied, "Well Rever-end, the way we see it, God puts you in and sin puts you out."Simple isn’t it, folks! God puts you in and sin puts you out.Thank you, Reverend-on-the-bicycle, for that information!

Some years ago the world watched as three gray whales, icebound off Point Barrow, Alaska, floated battered and

bloody, gasping for breath at a single hole in the ice. Theironly hope: somehow to be transported five miles past the icepack to open sea. Rescuers began cutting a string of breath-ing holes about twenty five yards apart in the six-inch-thick-ice.

For eight days they coaxed the whales from one hole to thenext, mile after mile. Along the way, one vanished and waspresumed dead. But finally, with the help of Russian ice-breakers, the whales they had named Putu and Siku swamto freedom.

Faithful church attendance is as needful for the soul as wasthat string of breathing holes for the whales. The fellowshipwith other saints, the hearing of the Word, worship and theoperation of the Holy Ghost, reinvigorates the soul that itmay face the wear and tear of the world. The true saint ofGod looks with anticipation to the next breathing hole(church service) knowing they need the life it brings. Theoft’ neglected midweek service is a great help in getting usto heaven!

s the Napoleonic wars drew to a close and the Industrial Revolutionswept Britain, the British Isles became in-creasingly dependant on merchant ship-ping for imports of the raw materialsneeded to support her thriving industry.Manufactured goods replaced ballaststones on ships departing for the far-flungoutposts of the British Empire. There were few guarantees in the earlydays of the merchant marine. Crowds ofwell-wishers, owners, family and inves-tors, cheered the departure of ships loadedwith valuable cargoes. After the mast-topsfaded below the horizon little or nothingwould be heard of these ships for months. There were no undersea telegraph cables,no shipboard radios to signal the fate of as h i p a n d h e r c r e w . T h e l a s t w o r d o n m a n y fine ships and men, was a posting atLloyds - "missing, presumed lost" - theirfates unknown. The numbers of ship-wrecks for these merchant ships wereunusually high. The greatest reason for thiswas

overloading the ships with too muchfreight. Then when they encountered highseas the ships could not withstand thestrain. By81836 public concern about theloss of ships and crews reached the pointwhere Parliament was forced to appoint acommittee to investigate the growing num-ber of shipwrecks. In81850, legislation waspassed to create the Marine Departmento f t h e B o a r d o f T r a d e , t o e n f o r c e a p p l i c a - tion of laws governing manning, crewcompetence, and operation of merchant

vessels.In81870 Samuel Plimsoll, a member ofParliament, demanded creation of a safetylimit, a load line to limit the weight ofcargo loaded aboard ships. Plimsoll ex-

posed what he described as coffin shipscreated by overloading, and drafted a billto improve conditions aboard merchant

vessels. The government formed a RoyalCommission to investigate merchant ma-rine practices and conditions and exposed

many malpractices committed by badowners. Public awareness ofshoddy practices and abuse had

become widespread however, and in81876 the first load lineregulations were made into

law. Since then every mer-chant ship afloat carriesthe signature of

Samuel Plimsoll. A markis placed on the side ofa ship and that ship can

not be overloaded tocause the ship to settlein the water past that

mark. That mark iscalled the "Plimsoll Line."Let's draw a lesson fromthe "Plimsoll Line." It was not bad things

or illegal freight that was causing the ship-wrecks. It was good and legal freight; therewas just too much of it. There is truth to

the old saying, "Too much of a good thing."Sin is not only the use of bad things butalso the

abuse of good things.

There arethings that we may enjoy but their indul-gence becomes a sin. Jesus warns us inLu 21:34: "And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overchargedwith surfeiting, and drunkenness, and caresof this life, and so that day come upony o u u n a w a r e s . " Note that Christ says thatour hearts may be overcharged (or loadedto heavy) with the cares of this life. Caresof this life are not sins, but just concernswe have with our existence. He warnedus that too much of a necessary thing maybring about spiritual ruin. You see, not every choice we make is be-tween right and wrong. There are somechoices that we must make between that

which is good and that which is right. Inother words some choices are betweenw h a t i s a l l o w a b l e a n d w h a t i s r i g h t . Jesus told a story in Luke 14, of a manwho made a supper and invited the guests."And they all with one consent began tomake excuse. The first said unto him, Ihave bought a piece of ground, and I mustneeds go and see it: I pray thee have meexcused. And another said, I have bought five yokeof oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray

thee have me excused.A n d a n o t h e r s a i d , I h a v e m a r -ried a wife, and therefore Icannot come (Luke 14:18-20)."I notice that the sin ofthese guest were notbad things in them-selves. What is wrongwith going to try out anew team of oxen, go-ing to see a new pieceof property or goingon a honeymoon withyour new bride? It wasthe abuse of thesethings that causedthem to be a sin. They displaced their ob-ligation to God with these things that werenot sins in themselves; therefore they be-came sin by taking priority over God.One thing that youth put great emphasison is their personal appearance. That isgood, if not overdone. Don't get mewrong. I think you can dress youthful andstylish and still stay within God's Word. The Bible teaches modesty as well as mod-eration. When we become so consumedwith clothes that we spend an unreason-able amount of money on our personal ap-pearance and other obligations go unmet,we have made clothing our person a sin.I think that we need to evaluate our livesand make sure that we do not allow any-thing that is legal to become wrong throughits abuse. Remember the "Plimsoll Line."Too many shipwrecks come through justoverloading something that would be goodif it was kept in moderation.Bill Parks

That’s a strange title for asermon. Yeah! That’s what Ithought until I gave it somethought and now I’m askingyou to do the same. When Iwas a boy growing up inNewport, KY, parkingmeters were found almosteverywhere; not onlydowntown, but on the sidestreets as well. They usedthese small gadgets to raiserevenue for the city. Youwere afraid to leave yourcar parked without deposit-ing some small change, infear you would receive a

parking ticket for elapsed time on the meter. The thrill of thetrip to town was finding a parking space where some timewas left on the meter. You could take care of your needs ina hurry while someone else paid your parking. Did you everdrive around looking for a meter with time left on it? It usedto be more common when money was little bit tighter than itis today. We called it, "Parking on someone else’s nickel."

Now that mind-set is quite alright and acceptable whenhunting for a place to park; however, that attitude is certainlynot acceptable when it comes to the service of the Lord. This principle "Parking on someone else’s nickel" is beingapplied by many that attend our churches today! Did youknow that statistics prove that in almost in every church, almost one-third of the people who claim membershipcontribute absolutely nothing towards its support. Oh, theywant the church there when its time for the children to getmarried. They want the church there for funerals, whensomeone in the family dies. Also, they want the church (andthe pastor) when they’re sick, for they want to be visited inthe hospital. There are a dozen other reasons, they expectservices rendered from the church; however, they hardlyever feel or share in the financial responsibilities of thechurch. They enjoy "Parking on someone else’s nickel." Insome of my studies, I have found that 20% of the people inmost churches account for 80% of the giving.

Many churches today, rarely, if ever talk about money. Mostpastors feel intimidated to even mention tithing, for fear oftheir motives being misunderstood. Pastors do their congre-gations an injustice when they don’t challenge them andthemselves to give financially. Giving is an integral part ofour discipleship to God. To not offer that challenge is to roball of us of the joy of giving.

Stewardship... How long has it been since I’ve heard anentire sermon on that subject? Just exactly what is steward-ship? It is enumerating the ways in which God has blessedyou, then asking yourself how you might respond. Begin withthe fact that God allowed His only begotten Son to die on thecross, so you and I might have life in all its fullness. Then, move on to home, food, clothing, work, family and friends. We soon find that virtually all that is good about life is a giftfrom God. Then we need to ask... "What would be anappropriate measure of my response to God’s goodness?"That’s stewardship! Anything less is a matter of "Parking onsomeone else’s nickel."

Churches with financial problems experience more sustainedanxiety and pressure than churches without monetarytroubles. Our present generation of church members haslearned how to make more money, but we haven’t learned tomanage it. Many young couples have become so financiallystrapped they aren’t able to give. They spent money forthings they didn’t have for things they really didn’t need. Icall it "Buying Silk When You Owe For Milk".

There was a perfect marriageBut for a feminine flaw;

He was quick on the deposit,But she was faster on the draw.

Unwise spending ties your hands from doing what God wantsand commands you to do. Apart of the verse in Ephesians4:28, reads: "...working withhis hands the thing which isgood, that he may have togive to him that needeth."Too many times we ask Godto bless the things we wantor what we want to do, yetthe best way is to do what wealready know God has prom-ised to bless. Look at Malachi3:10-11: "Bring ye all thetithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me nowherewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open youthe windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, thatthere shall not be room enough to receive it.And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shallnot destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall yourvine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith theLORD of hosts".

The biblical standard of the tithe is the best way to start man-

aging our monies and our lives. Some say they can’t afford totithe (10%) so they give nothing! My advice is to start system-atically giving with something even if it is less that 10%. Whynot trust God with a small amount and work your way up.Grow from wherever you are now to the next step where Godwants you to be. Most people move upward by gradual steps.Tithing gives you greater control over the rest of your resources.Don’t be guilty of sitting in church and "Parking on someoneelse’s nickel".

In Mark 12:41, Jesus beheld... "How" the people cast moneyinto the treasury. Many that were rich cast in much. However, the same story recorded by Luke in chapter 21:1 teaches usthat Jesus saw "what" the rich were casting into the treasury. In both accounts, the writer points us to "a poor widow" withonly two mites who Christ said, "Cast in more than all". Justbecause she went to church with the rich, didn’t stop her fromdoing her part. She would not be guilty of my text.

One more thing, this Holiness Messenger, the one you areholding right now, I trust you are not "Reading on someoneelse’s nickel." Please check your personal subscription or asksomeone in your church, "We do support the Holiness Mes-senger adequately, don’t we?" Printing and postage have goneup in recent years, we could use a little more help. Also it hascome to my attention that the HM is needing a new Fax Ma-chine. How about just dropping them a little extra in the offer-ing towards the purchase of this needed piece of equipment.God Bless you all!

In AD 303 the Roman Emperor Diocletian issued an edictto destroy Christians and their Bibles. The persecution thatfollowed was brutal. He built a monument on which he wrotethese triumphant words: "Extinctonomene Christianorum" (the nameChristian is extinguished). Hefashioned a medal with the en-graving, "The Christian religion isdestroyed and the worship of godsis destroyed."

25 years later Doicletianwas dead and Constatine cameto power. He offered a sizable re-ward to anyone who could pro-duce a copy of the scriptures. Bythe next day he was offered 50copies. Christianity was alive!

The French philosopher Voltaire (1694-1778) declared:"100 years from my day, there will not be a Bible in the earthexcept one that is looked upon by an antiquarian curiosityseeker." 100 years later Voltaire was dead and his own house

and press were being used to printand store Bibles by the GenevaBible Society.

Robert Ingersoll, an Americanagnostic, for instance, once held upa copy of the Bible and arrogantlyasserted, "In fifteen years I willhave this book in the morgue."After the death of Ingersoll, a manby the name of Robert Garry satand wrote Bible lessons at he verydesk at which Ingersoll had workedto try to discredit the Bible.

Last eve I paused beside a blacksmith’s door,And heard the anvil ring the vesper chime;

Then looking I saw upon the floor,Old hammers worn with beating years of time.

"How many anvils have you had," said I,"To wear and batter all these hammers so?"

"Just one," said he and then with twinkling eye,"The anvil wears the hammers out, you know."

"And so," I thought, "The anvil of God’s Word,For ages skeptic blows have beat upon,

Yet, though the noise of falling blows was heard,The anvil is unchanged, the hammers gone."

There is much varied thought concerning thesecond coming of Jesus Christ and sadly thedoctrine has become divisive and controver-sial. Consequently, the very important doctrinehas not been taught and preached as it shouldbe. The nature of this conference is not to de-bate the doctrine but to emphasize the impor-tance of these last days. While even the speak-ers may differ in belief in some details, the uni-fied message will be the soon return of Christand how the events of these last days correlatewith Bible prophecy.
