Basic Principles - Why Affordable Housing Matters:

Our current housing situation is not the result of a purely free market

We can and do affect the way our community develops

Quality, affordable housing is part of competing for new jobs.

Mixed-price/mixed income housing can desirable and attractive.

Quality affordable housing is needed for our citizens to succeed

Quality Development Is and Can Be Affordable!

Who is Affordable Housing For?

Quality affordable housing provides opportunities for people, regardless of capability or current income, to live in dignity in a safe, quality housing unit. This includes all types of workers, veterans, and people with disabilities.

Various types of housing and various levels of affordability are needed to meet the diverse needs of our community.

Biznet Village, A VBCDC Multifamily Development

•A licensed Intermediate Care Facility•Provides 24/7 care & housing to 24 adults with profound developmental disabilities•Collaborative effort with Virginia Beach Dept. of Human Services (DHS)•DHS provides 24/7 care to residents•VBCDC provides 24/7 property & maintenance service•Awarded 2008 Virginia Housing Award for “Best Housing Development”

Beach Park West, A VBCDC Multifamily Development•Provides permanent housing to 18 adults with mental illness disabilities •Collaborative effort with the Virginia Beach Dept. of Human Services•EarthCraft Certified; provides units that are 30% more efficient than similar code built units•Awarded the Virginia Housing Award for “Best Affordable Housing Energy Conservation Effort” in November, 2011

Cedar Grove, A VBCDC Multifamily Development•32 apartments to serve Homeless Disabled Veterans, singles or families• Construction will be EarthCraft certified, universally designed, & at least 25% of units will be fully accessible •A community room will be available for residents as well as a resident planned garden•Case management will be provided through the Hampton VA Medical Center•Residents will be linked to appropriate community resources & benefit programs• Estimated completion is December 2012

VBCDC’s Ocean Trace Homeownership Program•12 affordable 2 bedroom 2 full bath condo’s

•1 mile from the Virginia Beach Oceanfront

•Gated Community

•Amenities include newly renovated pool, lush landscaping, fitness center, grilling area, bike racks, playground, sand volleyball court, clubhouse, car wash area, business center, and more!

•1st phase of condos will be ready in September of 2011

The Schoolhouse at Kempes VillageA VBCDC Multifamily Development

•Will provide 73 apartments for workers including bank tellers, retail, and others•Targets households with income of 60% of Area Median Income and under•Preserves the historic character of the school & gym with adaptive reuse•Includes construction of a new connecting building •Estimated completion is spring 2014
