ThE AGA KhAN FoUNDATIoN (AKF) in Afghanistan continues to deliver an integrated multi-input development pro-gramme in seven of the country’s 34 provinces, in central and northern Afghanistan. In 53 districts, AKF focuses on community development and governance, civil society, market development, natural resource management, infrastructure, education and health. These efforts include the establishment of more than 1,500 Community Development Councils through the Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Develop-ment’s National Solidarity Programme and, in partnership with the Ministry of Education, support to 216 government schools, 70 early childhood development centres and nearly 300 community-based education classes. These programmes have reached 30,000 primary and secondary school students. Over 2,700 community-based sav-ings groups with an overall membership of nearly 40,000 have been established. Rural development activities include livestock development, water use associations and tourism promotion. To date, more than 30 infrastructure projects have been completed in 25 districts that have directly or indirectly benefited nearly two million people. In addition, more than 80 projects are under construction.
ThE AGA KhAN DEvELopmENT NETworK (AKDN)’s activities in Afghanistan include large-scale rural development; health, education and civil society programmes; microfinance services; the rehabilitation of historic neighbourhoods in Kabul and Herat; a rapidly grow-ing mobile phone network that now reaches all provinces and services over two million customers; and the renovation of a five-star hotel in Kabul. With the support of its donors and partners, more than US$ 700 million has been channelled through the AKDN for Afghanistan’s reconstruction.
