State football returnsIt is an exciting weekend of football in Victoria. At North Port Oval today the Peter Jackson VFL state team will welcome the Carlton Draught WAFL
side to North Port Oval for the first time since 2007. The VFL is looking to break a three-game
state-football drought, but to our advantage is the fact the WAFL hasn’t won in Victoria for over
a century.
Congratulations go to all players and staff from both competitions selected to represent your
state league today. It is certainly an honour to be chosen from hundreds of talented players in
each competition and we hope you are able to use the opportunity to develop your game and
test yourself against the best players from another state.
State football has always provided the chance for players to be discovered, showcasing
their skills against quality opposition. History shows a long list of AFL draft ees who have
represented their competition at state-league level, with Casey Demon Tim Smith the most
recent example, draft ed to Melbourne last year aft er being a late addition to the 2016 VFL state
squad.
Smith joins a number of players that have represented the VFL since 2012 whose performances at
club and state level have sparked AFL interest. The likes of Dean Towers (North Ballarat/Sydney),
Kyle Hartigan (Werribee/Adelaide), Brett Goodes (Williamstown/Western Bulldogs), Sam Dwyer
(Port Melbourne/Collingwood), Sam Lloyd (Frankston/Richmond), Kane Lambert (Northern Blues
and Williamstown/Richmond) and Ben Ross (Werribee/Hawthorn) are just some of the names that
have made the most of their opportunities at state level to press their case in front of AFL recruiters.
Good luck to both teams today, and go the Big V!
In other matches, Richmond and Essendon continue their traditional VFL Dreamtime game, played at
Punt Road Oval as a ‘double-header’ with the MCG Dreamtime game. Footscray will face Sandringham
tonight under lights at VU Whitten Oval, so the VFL action will continue into the evening.
Next week in the Record we will focus on Indigenous Round across the VFL and TAC Cup, highlighting
the talent within both our competitions as the AFL celebrates Sir Doug Nicholls Round this weekend.

Plapp happy in state coach role
The coach of the Peter Jackson VFL for today’s state game against the WAFL may not be a native Victorian, but he certainly
knows what state football is all about.
Casey Demons mentor Justin Plapp played two state games for
Tasmania in 1996 and 2009 and is intent on instilling his
passion for the concept into the 2017 VFL squad.
4 www.vfl.com.au
The VFL hasn’t triumphed in a state game since defeating the Tasmanian State League by 108 points at Blundstone Arena in 2012, losing encounters with the WAFL by 17 points in 2013 and the SANFL twice – by 22 points in 2014 and by 19 points last year.
With the 2017 squad spending only three sessions together in the lead-up to the clash at North Port Oval, Plapp – with assistant coaches Nick Daff y (North Ballarat), Ben Patrick (Werribee), Ricky Petterd (Box Hill Hawks) and Danny Ryan (Casey) – has sought to unite a disparate group of players in a short space of time to return the competition to the winners list.
“We felt it was really important to sell the history of state footy and get the squad to really understand the importance it plays in Australia – and particularly in Victoria,” Plapp said. “To play in the Big V jumper is not something that’s given – it’s something that’s really earned.
“The characteristics we want are that they’re hungry and they want to come into a team and play a role. From week to week we’re all at war, but very quickly we’ve got to come together and be united.
“I’m not a Victorian myself, but I played state football on two occasions for Tasmania and I’ve got some unbelievably fond memories of what state football means to me.”
Plapp said he initially felt “uncomfortable” with the thought of leading the VFL given the reputation of some who have preceded him in the role, but the 2016 VFL Grand Final coach only had to look back on his own experiences in state football in order to happily accept it.
“You see these roles as belonging to blokes who
have been in the system a long time and are highly
respected in state footy like Andy Collins (state coach
in 2016), Gary Ayres (2012 and 2013) and Gerard
FitzGerald (2002, 2004, 2008 and 2010),” Plapp said.
“I’m a younger coach (39 years old) and I don’t hold
myself in that category of coach.
“It doesn’t mean that I doubt myself as a coach; it just
took me a while to get my head wrapped around the
idea.
“In the end, it was a pretty easy decision to do it
because I’m passionate about state footy, whether
that’s in my homeland or coaching in Victoria.”
Plapp said the VFL’s style of play will be “aggressive in
all areas” to match a WAFL team he expected would
be full of “smaller, high-intensity players that can
cover the ground really well”.
He pointed to VFL stars with a wide range of skills and
experiences as being key cogs to his plan for success.
“I see (Coburg ruckman) Tommy Goodwin as a really
pivotal person in our team, while (Williamstown
midfielder) Michael Gibbons is really passionate
about playing state footy,” Plapp said. “We don’t have
a lot of key-position players so (Port Melbourne tall
forward) Jordan Lisle is really pivotal, as are VFL club
leaders like (Richmond captain) Sam Darley.
“The key thing for me is that we have players
prepared to play roles and be selfless, and we think
we’re going to get that based on the character of guys
in our squad.”

Broadbridge aiming to break drought for Black SwansBy Steve Tuohey
Carlton Draught WAFL State coach Michael Broadbridge will be aiming to break one of the most significant droughts in WA football history when he leads the WAFL into this year’s State Game against Victoria at North Port Oval. The former Claremont head coach and AFL assistant at West Coast, Fremantle and Collingwood, will attempt to coach the first WA win against Victoria in Melbourne – a drought that extends 113 years.
The two states have played 23 times in Melbourne since the first clash in 1904, the most recent seeing Victoria claim a 119-point win at Port Melbourne 10 years ago.
The last clash between the two States was played in WA in 2013 at Northam, with WA claiming its first win over Victoria in 22 years aft er kicking 10 goals to three in the second half to run out 17.16 (118) to 15.11 (101) winners.
Since then, a state football resurgence has seen WA win interstate matches against the NEAFL, South Australia and Tasmania to make it four consecutive State Game victories.
Broadbridge, who broke one West Australian football drought when he was part of the historic 1985 Teal Cup team that won the State’s first national under-18s title, said he was looking forward to the chance of creating another piece of WA football history.
“We are all really committed and looking forward to the challenge,” he said.
“We’re obviously expecting a certain style of play from the VFL on that ground so we’ve taken the approach of selecting players in the roles we’re likely to need,” Broadbridge said.
“We’ve been out watching players at the WAFL each week and all of the senior coaches have been very supportive and given us great feedback on which players are in form in the roles we need and who is most worthy of consideration.
“Overall, with the size of the ground at North Port, the opposition, and the chance it could be a bit slippery, means we’ve selected players with bigger bodies who are strong over the ball and strong at the contest, which we’ll look to compliment with a bit of flair.
“We’ve also looked at players who we think can adapt
well, have some experience playing in the conditions against similar opposition and are mentally strong.”
The 27 players selected in the WA squad include 18 with previous State Game experience and 14 who have been AFL-listed, including Leroy Jetta who played 93 games for Essendon.
Aaron Black (West Perth) and Jye Bolton (Claremont) are Sandover Medallists and Kyle Anderson (East Perth), Ryan Cook (South Fremantle) and Kyal Horsley (Subiaco), are all WAFL club captains.
West Perth Football Club stalwart Andrew Strijk (198 games) is set to play his sixth State game.
Broadbridge will be supported by assistant coaches Paul Johnson, Steve Malaxos, Clay McLernon and Garry Moss, who provide a blend of youth and experience.
“I’ve tried to get a balanced panel with good pedigree and strong ambition,” he said.
“Paul Johnson has been one of the best WAFL and State players in recent years, Garry Moss is a former AFL and WAFL player looking to enhance his coaching credentials, Clay McLernon is a WAFL Premiership player doing a fantastic job with the East Fremantle Colts and Steve Malaxos really balances it out well with his experience as a WAFL coach and as a player at State level.
“Overall, we believe we have put together a really strong group of players and coaches for this contest.”

Ballard’s options open
It was a win-win situation for Jacob Ballard. The Richmond midfielder would either represent the Peter Jackson VFL in Saturday’s state game or the Tigers in the annual VFL Dreamtime match.
Photo: Kadek Thatcher
7www.taccup.com.au
The 23-year-old was named alongside his captain Sam Darley in the initial 42-player state squad for the VFL’s clash with the WAFL at North Port Oval but was left out of the reduced 27-player training squad last week.
However, Ballard’s silver lining is that he gets to take to Punt Road Oval as Richmond faces Essendon’s VFL team before Saturday night’s Dreamtime at the ‘G AFL clash between the two clubs.
In his first year with the VFL Tigers in 2016 aft er two seasons on Fremantle’s rookie list, the Warrandyte product experienced the “good crowd and atmo-sphere” at Punt Road for the VFL Dreamtime match in which Richmond lost to the Bombers by 23 points.
But as a key contributor to the competition’s second-highest-scoring team, Ballard is hoping a potent Tigers forward line can turn the tables in 2017.
“I think it’s quite a versatile forward line; we’ve got a few diff erent players that can go through there,” Ballard said recently on 94.1FM 3WBC’s Monday night VFL Rewind program.
“I’m really enjoying playing as an inside midfielder and spending a bit more time up forward this year, with our new structures and game plans giving some of our bigger-bodied midfielders a chance to rest up as our deepest forward rather than going to the bench.”
189cm Ballard has booted five goals in six games in 2017 as well as averaging 23 disposals, 11 contested possessions, five tackles and four clearances per game to illustrate why he was included in the initial state squad.
Having missed out at the draft s as an 18-year-old at the Northern Knights in 2012, the tough on-baller was surprised to be selected by Fremantle with pick no.47 in the 2013 Rookie Draft aft er a season with the Northern Blues. He went on to play one AFL game for

My mum’s roast dinner on a Sunday night.
If you could do anything, what would be your dream job?
I’ll keep it simple and say an AFL player.

I had stress fractures in my lower back as a bottom-age TAC Cup player.
If you could be on any TV series, which series would it be?
‘The Bachelor’ is probably the easy option.
Which teammate would you not want to be stranded on a desert island with and why?
Definitely Jake Aarts. He just doesn’t shut up and is very annoying.
the Dockers in the final round of the 2015 season.
“I played OK (at the Blues) but didn’t think I did anything too spectacular and got a surprise call-up in the Rookie Draft by Fremantle,” Ballard said. “I loved my time there but unfortunately got delisted aft er two seasons.
“It was a pretty easy decision to come back home to Melbourne and have that support circle and be close to family and friends.
“You never want to say (the AFL dream) is over. I enjoy playing at the highest level possible so I was always going to keep playing at VFL level for a while aft er be-ing delisted, but it does keep my options open if the chance was to come up to get re-draft ed.”
Whether it was the state game or one of the VFL’s biggest home-and-away events, Ballard was always going to have a chance to put himself front of mind for VFL watchers this weekend.

The Round 9 AFL encounter between Geelong and the Western Bulldogs produced
an amazing 238 total tackles and the 208-tackle tally in the clash between the VFL Cats and Footscray the next day wasn’t far off that. Geelong weathered 116 tackles from the Bulldogs to prevail by 12 points, also laying 92 of its own.
208
The Northern Blues are the VFL’s top team for kicks and marks per game and Sandringham failed to
stop them monopolising the ball when it fell to a 38-point defeat in Round 6. The Blues enjoyed 59 more kicks and 62 more marks than the Zebras, with Simon White (20 kicks) and Liam Jones (15 marks) leading the way in each category.
62
Werribee has won four straight games and just held on to beat North Ballarat by five points in
Round 6. A big factor in their recent success is the emergence of young VFL-listed talent such as 21-year-old Ryley Barrack, who posted game-highs of 21 kicks and nine inside-50s against the Roosters.
21
Casey’s next generationThis year’s Casey Demons outfit isn’t producing the same football as in 2016 when it reached the Peter Jackson VFL Grand Final, but opportunities given to diff erent players may be starting to pay off .
Aft er enduring a 1-4 start to 2017, the Demons’ 43-point defeat of previously unbeaten Port Melbourne at Casey Fields in Round 6 indicates senior coach Justin Plapp’s troops may be rediscovering their mojo.
Last year, Casey was easily the competition’s top-ranked team for handballs and uncontested possessions per game during the H&A season. Second only to Williamstown in average contested possessions and clearances, the Demons won the ball in close and flicked it out of congestion by hand to those outside the contest.
This frenetic ball movement created plenty of space for Casey’s runners to drive the ball forward and resulted in the club being the VFL’s best for inside-50s and points scored per game.
How things have changed though.
Prime movers from 2016 such as Jack Grimes, Viv Michie and Ben Newton were delisted from aligned AFL club Melbourne, while talented young ball-winner Clayton Oliver has graduated to regular elite-level football.
Reduced midfield depth means the 2017 Demons are ranked only ninth for disposals per game and eighth for uncontested possessions, while also falling to 11th for inside-50s and 10th for points scored. The majority of the engine-room load has fallen on Ben Kennedy (averaging 24 disposals and four inside-50s), Jack Trengove (24 disposals and four clearances) and returned VFL-lister Mitch Gent (19 disposals and five tackles).
It’s diff icult to replace the core of professional footballers Casey has lost, but chances are being given to young VFL-listed talent such as state-squad member Bayley Fritsch (all six games), Angus Scott (six) and Aloysio Ferreira (five).
Those players along with the likes of Dylan Collis, Dylan Gordon and Sean Dwyer were part of the victory over Port Melbourne, while Ed Morris – who unluckily missed out on the 2016 Grand Final team – booted three crucial goals in the final quarter.
As Plapp turns his focus to coaching the VFL state team this week, he’ll be feeling better in the knowledge his players are grasping those opportunities he’s had to give them.

to sit down in the past and have hard conversations so that wasn’t something I was worried about having to do.”
Hetherington relinquished the coaching position to Carlton forward coach Scott Gowans late in 2016. In the week leading up to her beloved team’s Round 1 clash with Seaford, Hetherington was named as co-captain alongside Steph Chiocci.
“To have Scott – who had just come to the club – think that I was captain material was an honour, but to me, ‘captain’ is just a title. We have so many quality leaders at the club and everyone has an important role to play.”
607 days aft er her ACL injury, she ran out for Round 1 and everything came flooding back. Aft er being a relentless test for so long, she had rediscovered the spark that made footy fun again – “I’ll probably cry when I kick my first goal.”
So the tears will fall, again. But Tanya Hetherington has made those tears sing a diff erent tune.
Hetherington’s playing returnBy Callum O’Connor
On August 20, 2016, Diamond Creek coach Tanya Hetherington stood arm-in-arm with her team in the middle of Box Hill City Oval and cried.
Diamond Creek had just fallen to the Eastern Devils in the final match of the home-and-away season. Not that it mattered, as it had been a dead rubber. In her first season as a Swisse Wellness VFL Women’s coach, Hetherington’s side had missed the finals - aft er playing off for the previous four premierships - thanks to an injury run so horrific that one half-expected Quentin Tarantino to turn up and roll the cameras.
It was a sad end to what had been the most chal-lenging 12 months of Hetherington’s career. She had ruptured her left ACL in Diamond Creek’s 2015 preliminary-final win over Melbourne Uni and decided to take the position of senior coach vacated by Brad Lederman at season’s end. The football gods conspired against her and her team, with injuries and the unavailability of their home ground of Plenty Park denying the Creekers any stability and, ultimately, a VFLW finals appearance. In October, she was over-looked in the inaugural AFL Women’s draft .
It was a hand of bad luck that could have broken Hetherington’s spirit. Instead, she has absorbed every harsh lesson, every stolen chance and every setback to help claw her way back.
“My mantra was to keep positive,” Hetherington said. “I’d thought about taking up coaching somewhere down the track once I’d finished playing but it wasn’t something I’d planned to do so soon.”
Hetherington joined Diamond Creek in 2008. The team she would coach, train and inevitably discipline was the same one with which she had shared the blood, sweat and tears of a changeroom for nearly a decade. The question remained: Would the first-season coach be able to put aside her friendships with old teammates when she took the reins?
“I had spoken to a fair few people about whether I should do it,” admitted Hetherington, who turned to former Richmond coach Jeff Gieschen for counsel throughout the season. “The girls said that I had their respect and that they would support me.

AFL Vic News
In partnership with VicHealth and the Richmond Football Club, AFL Victoria’s Boorimul Program has been designed to identify and nurture talented Indigenous female players into the elite AFL pathway.
Drawing on similarities from the highly-successful Laguntas program for males, the Boorimul Program will support talented young female Indigenous athletes aged 16-20 to not only maximise their football potential but develop them as culturally aff irmed and resilient community members.
In addition to enhancing on-field talent, the new program will also provide opportunities for Indigenous females to engage with Australian Football through umpiring, coaching and administrative work in the AFL.
AFL Victoria Indigenous Programs Manager Aaron Davey said the program would be a key factor in increasing the diversity in our game.
“In partnership with VicHealth and the Richmond Football Club, AFL Victoria is excited to develop the Boorimul program which will use football as a vehicle to help increase participation opportunities for young Indigenous women,” Davey said.
“As of 2017, only five per cent of the total playing pool in the AFLW league is of Indigenous background, so we hope that through the introduction of the Boorimul program we can see that number become even greater in the near future.”
Complementing the work undertaken by its Korin
Gamadji Institute (KGI) and Next Generation
Academy program, Richmond chief executive
Brendon Gale said the Boorimul program supports
the Club’s commitment to the Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander community and growing female
participation.
“As a provisional licence holder in AFLW, we have
made a commitment to driving participation
outcomes and we are well placed to deliver this
program having previously established the highly-
successful Laguntas program, in partnership with AFL
Victoria and VicHealth,” Gale said.
“This announcement comes off the back of the
alignment the Club recently established with the
Bendigo Thunder women’s team, a partnership that
also aims to promote participation and develop top-
end talent.”
Overseen by AFL Victoria Programs Coordinator
Lily Graham and Korin Gamadji Institute Programs
Manager Thara Brown, the program will be
developed during the first half of the 2017 season
with commencement to occur in the back half of the
season.
For more information on the Boorimul program visit

11. JYE BOLTON
Had a brilliant 2016 with Claremont aft er crossing from the VFL. Took all before him winning last year’s State game Simpson Medal, the Sandover Medal and his club’s fairest and best award. A tireless worker who racks up big midfield numbers. His VFL experience will be crucial to the WAFL’s hopes.
12. KODY MANNING
An attacking player well known for imposing himself on the contest and the opposition. He also is a terrific runner and has good kicking skills. Will be an important player for the WAFL in what will be his second appearance for his State.
13. LUKE MEADOWS
Had a breakout season with West Perth in 2016 as an attacking half-back. Played for WA and was on the radar of AFL clubs. Has now gone into the middle in 2017 as a big-bodied midfielder with great kicking skills. Has worked a treat with him averaging 25.4 disposals and kicking six goals.
2. SHANE NELSON
Having yet another remarkable season in the midfield for West Perth averaging 32.4 disposals a game. Has been remarkably consistent over a 104-game career now averaging 29.3 touches. Is a dual fairest and best winner and deserves to earn a third state jumper.
3. AARON BLACK
Continues to be remarkably consistent with his work rate, ability to run all day and rack up possessions whether playing on the wing or as an inside midfielder. Despite being only 24, is a 138-game player, Sandover Medallist, fairest and best winner and set for a fourth time playing for WA.
4. HAIDEN SCHLOITHE
Had a brilliant 2014 season in his first year off Fremantle’s list before injury hindered him the past two years. He is back to his best in 2017 in the midfield where he’s a prolific ball winner, goal kicker, good user and can be a physical presence. Set for his second appearance representing WA.
5. WILL MAGINNESS
The former Eagle had his AFL career cut short through injury but East Perth showed faith in him and he is repaying them this season both at half-forward and through the midfield. Showing quality averaging 21.2 touches a game and kicking 12 goals.
6. LEIGH KITCHIN
Former Frankston VFL midfielder will know the ground well as he continues to be an outstanding recruit for Subiaco. Is in his third WAFL season, will play for WA for a third time already, has taken part in two grand finals the past two years and continues to be a prolific inside midfielder.
23www.taccup.com.au

15. ANDREW STRIJK
The 198-game veteran remains one of the best and most damaging players in the league on his powerful right foot. Can be equally eff ective playing as an attacking running defender or dangerous half-forward. Kicked career-best five goals last weekend. Will be his sixth time representing WA.
16. JONATHON MARSH
Has returned to East Fremantle from a stint at Collingwood and is filling a role as a big-bodied midfielder. Has been doing the job racking up 29.1 possessions a game. His big body and Victorian experience will be important in State game.
17. LACHLAN DELAHUNTY
Continued to play very well as a makeshift ruckman for Subiaco, is outstanding at ground level and a big factor in the Lions reaching the grand final the past three years. Knows the VFL well and will represent the WAFL for the second time.
18. COREY ADAMSON
The former baseballer developed well in two years on West Coast’s list before joining Subiaco in 2017. Aft er a slow start through injury, is settling in nicely and with his hardness and ball-winning ability, will be perfectly suited to the small confines of North Port Oval.
19. MATT RIGGIO
Been an outstanding servant for Swan Districts since arriving from North Melbourne in 2010. Is a premiership player, fairest and best winner and remains a prolific ball winner averaging 23 touches a game this season. Big body perfectly suited to what will be his second State game appearance.
20. CLANCY WHEELER
The versatile big man continues to be outstanding in whatever role he’s asked to play. Spends most of his time at centre half-back but can be more than eff ective with stints in the ruck. A dual premiership, 127-game player now who has previously played twice for WA.
21. JORDAN LOCKYER
One of the more unheralded members of a dominant Subiaco outfit but continues to play a tremendous role at centre half-back both defensively, shutting down some quality opponents, but also taking intercept marks and setting up play. Played in last two grand finals aft er leaving Sydney.
22. TALLAN AMES

23. KYLE ANDERSON
The East Perth co-captain has struggled through injury to have only played 96 games since making his debut in 2009. When on the field there has been no better lockdown defender in the competition. Rarely beaten in one-on-one contests and a terrific leader to boot ahead of his state debut.
24. BEN SAUNDERS
Is the perennial leading goalkicker in the WAFL since joining South Fremantle from Claremont in 2012. Has kicked 244 goals in 86 games for the Bulldogs and won three Bernie Naylor Medals. Has kicked five goals in each of his previous two games representing WA.
25. BLAINE JOHNSON
Dangerous forward has become an important part of South Fremantle’s resurgence the past 18 months since returning from Carlton. Can take a good mark and kick well, but it’s his tackling pressure and ability to do the mercurial that make him a standout. Has kicked 20 goals this season.
26. MITCH ANDREWS
The 30-year-old is in career-best form continuing to do a power of work in the ruck for Claremont. Originally came to West Perth from Queensland in 2009 but has made his mark with the Tigers playing in two premierships. State debut now to come aft er 125 WAFL appearances.
28. TONY NOTTE
Former West Coast key position player has carved out an outstanding career. Perhaps has played his best football at centre half-back where he reads the play tremendously well. Can also go forward to take a mark and kick goals, and play in the ruck. Now a 187-game player who has played three times previously for WA.
