How Long Does it Take to Complete the Lapbook?

Doing a study guide page and mini-booklet a day, a 2-folder lapbook takes 2- 3 weeks to complete. However, you can expand the study portion and make it last as long as you like! That’s the beauty of homeschooling! Do it YOUR way!

Lapbook Assembly Choices(see photos on how to fold and glue your folders together)

We recommend using Zip Dry Glue or Elmer's Extreme.

Choice #1 -Do not glue your folders together until you have completely finished both folders. It is easier to work with one folder instead of two or three glued together.

Choice #2 -Glue both folders together before beginning. Some children like to see the entire project as they work on it. It helps with keeping up with which folder you are supposed to be working in. The choices are completely up to you and your child!

Keep in mind that children of the same age can have very different academic and motor skills. Some children may have trouble writing in some of the smaller spaces of this lapbook. If this

describes your child, we encourage you to let your child dictate the answers and you write for him. A lapbook is to be a fun project, not stressful.

Glue your folders together by putting glue (or you may staple) on the inside of the flaps. Then press the newly glued flaps together with your hands until they get a good strong hold to each other. Follow this step to add as many folders as you need for your project. Most of our lapbooks have either 2 or 3 folders.

1. Label your tabs: Study Guide, Book Log, NICK, Biography Reports, Outlines (Copywork and Notebooking, if using these).

2. Make copies of NICK notes and outline forms and put them behind the tabs. Your child can use either the NICK notes form (easier) or the outline form (a bit harder) after any of the study guides. These serve as a good review of the material in the study guide.

3. Hole punch your study guide and mini-booklets sheets and place behind the Study Guide tab. You will read a page of a study guide. Behind the study guide are all of the booklets that go with that study guide.

4. Keeping your office supplies handy-Measure the bottom of a quart size zip-lock bag. Then measure out a strip of duct tape that length. Lay the zip-lock bag on the lower edge of the tape. Fold the other end of the tape down on the zip-lock bag. Your duct tape should be sticking out from the bag. Now, you can hole punch the duct tape strip. DO NOT HOLE PUNCH INTO THE BAG! Then put it into your 3-ring binder. Use this bag to store items you will be using for your lapbook. Glue, scissors, hole puncher, stapler and extra staples, crayons, pencils, brads, ribbon, and any unfinished work. Doing this one step keeps you from having to constantly gather supplies every time you want to work on your lapbook!

Geography and Climate

Africa is the second –largest continent in the world and has large deserts, tropical rainforests, and grasslands. The continent contains 54 separate and sovereign countries, each with their own independent governments.

Africa has a large variety of climates, from snowy high mountains and wet rainforests to wide grassy savannahs and dry deserts. North Africa is covered by the Sahara Desert, the largest sandy desert in the world. The area around the equator has dense tropical rainforests, while a large part of the southern and central countries are grassy savannahs.

The Sahara Desert is one of the driest places in the world, receiving only 3-5 inches of rain a year. The temperatures in the Sahara reach above 100 in the daytime, while dipping below freezing after the heat from the sun is gone at night. The world’s highest recorded temperature was 136deg, in Libya, a country in northern Africa. The desert contains great sand dunes and drifts, rocky mountains, gravel plains, and small areas of vegetation around oases. The Nile River is the longest river in the world. It runs from Lake Victoria in the south, over 4,000 miles through the Sahara Desert, finally dumping into the Mediterranean Sea. This is an important life-line for the farming areas around its banks.

The rainforests of Africa are centered around the equator and, like all rainforests, are some of the most important centers of biodiversity in the world, full of an amazing variety of animals and plants. Like most tropical areas, the African rainforests generally stay near 70 degrees all year, while receiving up to 80 inches of rain each year! The climate in the rainforest stays nearly the same all year long, with little or no discernible seasons. Many of the life forms in the rainforests have yet to be discovered, and may be extinct before we even find them. Large areas of rainforest are destroyed each year to clear land for farming and construction. In the western areas of Africa, the majority of the rainforest has already disappeared.

The African Savannah is a large, mostly flat area of grasses and trees. These areas typically have two seasons during the year, based on the weather instead of the temperature. The rainy season occurs during the summer and brings up to 25 inches of rain a month. The dry season lasts over half the year and causes large herds of animals to migrate through these areas, searching for enough water and food. This is also an area where birds from Europe and Asia will live during the northern winter. The East African Rift Valley stretches from the Red Sea to Madagascar, and has a variety of interesting geological features, including many lakes and active volcanoes.

Regions

Africa has many different regions, divided by climate, geography, religion and culture. The southern part of Africa was colonized by Great Britain in the 18 th century, causing it to be the richest country on the continent. The southern areas of Africa are largely made up of savannahs and arid land, and it has the world’s largest concentration of giraffes, lions, zebras and elephants in a state-owned animal park.

The Sahara Desert contains several nomadic people groups, who wander the desert herding sheep and goats or driving camel caravans. Many of these people live in much the same way as they always have, while others live in modern cities.

Egypt is a fascinating land of pyramids, ancient temples, and the sparkling Nile River. This country is in North Africa, on the edge of the Sahara Desert. Unlike the other Saharan countries, Egypt has been prosperous for thousands of years. The annual flooding of the Nile was the key to a thriving agricultural society. Using a system of interconnected ditches and advanced irrigation methods, the Egyptians were able to grow many crops in the middle of the desert. When the Egyptians built a dam in the Nile they controlled the flooding and many areas suffered droughts.

The southern Nile was not so advantageous, and the eastern countries in Africa are still among the poorest in the world. Frequent droughts and famines have caused hundreds of thousands of people to starve in these areas. The eastern countries of Africa have many areas that haven’t changed much in the last few hundred years.

The rainforests of western and central Africa are being rapidly destroyed to make room for new development and agriculture. These poor countries are struggling between increasing their economy by destroying the forests, and saving their heritage and culture. A huge variety of plants and animals are found here, more than anywhere else on the continent. However, while fragile and irreplaceable, the rainforests do little to help the struggling economy.

Many of the countries in this area of Africa have had years of civil war, sending hundreds of people to neighboring countries as refugees. These people are destitute and homeless, with nothing but the clothes on their backs and what they can carry. Millions more have been killed, mostly men, but also women and children. These areas are some of the poorest in the world.

Southern Africa is situated on the largest gold and diamond reserves in the world. This discovery led to a flood of immigrants, hoping to make their fortune. These foreigners clashed with the natives, who resented their intrusion and arrogant ways. Years of racial fighting caused divisions in South Africa, which have only recently lessened.

Animals

Far from being a barren land, Antarctica is thriving with hardy animals. Because the sea is actually warmer than the frozen land, most animals live in the ocean all or part of the time. However, the only land animals native to the continent itself are invertebrates such as earthworms and spiders. The warmer outlying islands are home to just a few native land animals, such as freshwater ducks.

One of the only mammals to live on both water and land, Antarctic seals are covered with blubber and fur which insulates them from the cold. Clumsy on land, seals are really water animals at heart. Once a seal slips into the ocean it becomes a beautiful, graceful creature, almost dancing through the water. Seals make a living in the water, hunting fish. Leopard seals also eat penguins and other seals. Some seals give birth on the ice, while the fur and elephant seals live in northern areas and have their babies on the rocky coasts. Seals have one baby at a time. After the baby has grown enough, it follows its parents into its real home, the sea.

Although they are the most well-known animals on the Antarctic continent, penguins are also found in Australia, Africa, South America, and islands throughout the southern hemisphere. Penguins are shaped like torpedoes, and use their wings as flippers to ‘fly’ through the water. These are water birds, and there is no kind of penguin that can fly in the air. Two species of penguins live in Antarctica, the Emperor and Adelie penguins. Three other species use one area as a nesting ground only.

The Emperor Penguin is the most commonly known. This bird lives most of its life in the ocean, but a migration inland occurs each year when it is time for egg-laying. The penguin lays a single egg which is placed on the father’s feet for incubation. After the eggs hatch, another migration to the sea begins. By the time the baby penguins arrive at the ocean, they are ready to take their first swim.

Whales can be found throughout the oceans around Antarctica in the summer. Whales migrate throughout the year. They travel towards the tropics in the winter, and the whale calves are born in these warmer waters. They then return to the southern sea to feast on the abundant fish and plankton during the summer, following the receding ice shelf as it melts.

Birds are abundant in the sea around Antarctica, but only a few birds nest on the continent, such as the petrel, penguins, and skuas. The islands around Antarctica are nesting grounds for a higher variety of seabirds.

Geography and ClimateFrom dry deserts in the west to rainforests in the east, freezing cold mountains in the north to sunny tropics in the south, Asia has every imaginable climate. Asia is the largest of the 7 continents, and the western border is shared with Europe.

Humid rainforests cover most of the southern areas of Asia. From the large country of India to the islands of Indonesia, the climate is tropical. Hot all year long, with seasons determined more by the amount of rainfall then the temperature; rainforests are home to a huge diversity of plant and animal life. Even the Amazonian and African rainforests do not compare in biological diversity. The southeast Asian rainforests are being destroyed faster than those of the rest of the world, and many of the species could be extinct before they are even discovered.

Much of China and Russia are mountainous and cold, and the highest mountain chain in the world is located in northern India, southern china, and Nepal. The Himalayan Mountains are rugged and unbelievably high, with over 100 mountains stretching more than 23,000 feet into the sky. These rocky peaks are uninhabitable, but many adventurous, brave souls attempt to climb them every year. The lower mountain ranges cover much of China, Mongolia, Russia, and the Middle Eastern countries. These areas are mostly temperate, with four seasons, and include forests and high deserts.

Most of Russia is blanketed in thick, cold coniferous forests. Hundreds of acres of trees surround isolated towns and farmland. These forests are bitterly cold in the winter, with heaps of snow and icy wind blowing down from the north. The deepest lake in the world, Lake Baikal, is found in southern Russia. It is nearly one mile deep!

Further north, the vast tundra stretches up to the polar ice cap. The tundra is characterized by ‘permafrost’, which is when the ground never thaws in the summer. The top of the soil thaws and the melting snow cannot soak into the frozen subsoil, so large shallow lakes form. The frozen ground cannot support trees and most plants are in the form of low ground cover and lichen. Short, cool summers and long dark winters are the predominant seasons in the tundra, and very few people live here.

There are many desert areas in Asia, as well. The large Arabian desert is found in the Middle East and covers most of the Arabian peninsula with shifting sand, barren mountains, and rocky plains. Much of the area between the edge of Africa and India is covered with some form of desert or semi-arid land. Even though this area is sub-tropical, the dry desert air causes winters to be cold and summers scorching. Large temperature differences occur, even between day and night.

Regions

Asia is a vast continent, the largest on the planet. From the Pacific Ocean in the east to Europe in the west, this huge area is covered with hundreds of different regions ~ truly a land of contrasts. From the rich to the poor, from frozen shepherd huts to breezy tropical fishing villages, there is more cultural and climatic diversity here than any other continent.

The southwestern deserts of Asia are war-torn countries with dry scrubby mountains and poor villages. These countries sit on the largest oil reserves that the world has discovered, giving them an important economic advantage. The poor live in small huts and some of the worst conditions on earth. The rich live in extravagant mansions. These countries are mostly ruled by Islamic law, and living conditions here can be very hard. Dictators and terrorist groups have controlled the region for years, and, although human rights groups are active in these areas, many people still suffer.

The south-central and southeastern areas of Asia are humid, covered with jungles. India is considered a sub-continent because it is on its own continental plate. The northern part of the plate forms the tallest mountain range in the world, the Himalayas. India is a beautiful land of rich tradition, a rich history, and rich natural wonders.

Southeastern Asia is wet and tropical, full of high, rocky mountain ranges and tiny islands. This area is beautiful, blanketed by thick jungles and surrounded with tropical beaches. For years, the governments of southeastern Asia isolated the people from the rest of the world. Many of these countries are poor, and the people are struggling to find their place in a global society.

China and central Asia are diverse areas, tropical in the south and cold in the north. The central plains are dry with extreme temperature differences. Large cities are over-filled and the people of China are still under strict government controls. Thousands of small rural villages live in poor conditions and still follow many of the customs that have been in place for hundreds of years.

Northern Asia is covered with the enormous country of Russia. From western Europe, Russia stretches across 11 time zones, nearly to Alaska! Long under socialist and communist governments, many areas of Russia are poverty-stricken and destitute. Russia has experienced many wars, including World Wars I and II, the Cold War with the United States, and conflict against the Middle East.

How do I know where to place each template in the folder?

How Long Does it Take to Complete the Lapbook?

Doing a study guide page and mini-booklet a day, a 2-folder lapbook takes about 2-3 weeks to complete. However, you can expand the study portion and make it last as long as you like! That’s the beauty of homeschooling! Do it YOUR way!

Lapbook Assembly Choices(see photos on how to fold and glue your folders together)

We recommend using Zip Dry Glue or Elmer's Extreme.

Choice #1 -Do not glue your folders together until you have completely finished all three folders. It is easier to work with one folder instead of two or three glued together.

Choice #2 -Glue all of your folders together before beginning.

Gather the number of folders required for the project. Fold them flat as seen here.

Original fold line

For each folder, fold the left and right sides inward toward the original line to create two flaps. Crease so that the highest part of each flap is touching the original line. It is important not to let the two flaps overlap. You may want

to take a ruler and run it down each crease to

make it sharper.

GLUE

Glue your folders together by putting glue (or you may staple) on the inside of the flaps. Then press the newly glued flaps together with your hands until they get a good strong hold to each other. Follow this step to add as many folders as you need for your project. Most of our lapbooks have either 2 or 3 folders.

Australia is the name for both a country and a continent, though many people now call the continent “Oceania”. One large landmass, an ‘island continent”, Australia is surrounded by many large and small islands. This entire area is considered the continent of Australia.

The mainland, as the country of Australia is often called by local people, covers the whole continent, except for the outlying islands. This area is about the same size as the United States, without Alaska. The climate is mostly dry and warm.

The central part of Australia is a vast, hot desert. Some areas are sandy, and some are rocky. Small areas have dry grassland or shrubby bushes. Few people live here and there are sometimes long droughts which make farming difficult. Australia has the largest single rock in the world, called Ayers Rock. It rises like a great red mountain out of the desert.

The southern and eastern parts of Australia are not as dry, and the Snowy Mountains are in this region. These mountainous areas are pretty much the only places in Australia’s mainland that get snow. The rainfall occurs throughout the year, and the temperatures are much cooler. These areas have farmland and the biggest cities in Australia.

Northern areas are more humid and tropical, and sometimes have hurricanes, which the Aboriginal natives call “willy-willies”. Tropical rainforests are found along the north-eastern coasts. The Great Coral reef is in the ocean off of the north-eastern coast of Australia. This is the largest reef in the world and the only living organism that can be seen from space!

The large island of Tasmania has mountains in the middle with coastal areas around them. The upper mountains are snowy in the winter, and some areas get a lot of rain, up to 100 inches. Summers on Tasmania are mild, with very few hot days.

The Islands of New Zealand have mountains in the west and plains in the east, and cooler weather than the mainland. Some areas of New Zealand are very rugged and isolated. The weather on these islands changes quickly with the storms that pass through the southern Pacific Ocean.

The thousands of islands, atolls, and volcanoes in Oceania are generally warm, tropical and wet. These islands are covered with beautiful rainforests and surrounded by sandy beaches and clear warm water.

It is interesting to remember that seasons south of the equator are opposite those on the north, so summer on some of these islands happens at the same time as winter on others. The mainland of Australia has winter in June, July and August.

Mainland Australia is mostly covered with deserts and dry scrubby grassland. Large ranches can be found here, but these dusty, rocky plains are mostly unwelcoming to humans. However, Aboriginal people have survived the scorching weather and unpredictable droughts for hundreds of years.

Around the southern and eastern edges are the towns and cities that the British colonists founded in the 17th century. This is still the area where most of the population makes lives. Sydney, one of the most well-known cities in Australia, is in the south-eastern corner, as well as most of the farmland.

The rainforests of northern Australia are unique in the world. These areas are mostly uninhabited and many are public parks, wildlife preserves, and other protected areas. Monsoon rainforests are lowland areas with seasonal wet and dry periods. Temperate rainforests on the southeastern side of Australia and Tasmania have cool winters and warm summers.

New Zealand is a country with two large islands and many tiny ones covered with mountains, volcanoes, glaciers, rainforests, and ringed by sandy beaches. The Lord of the Rings trilogy was filmed here, on New Zealand’s rugged mountains.

The islands of Micronesia are north of the equator. They’re tropical islands covered with warm rainforests, lined with miles of gorgeous beaches, and surrounded by warm, sparkly water. These islands are still home to the tribal natives who have lived there for hundreds of years, and have very few modern cities.

Papua New Guinea is the eastern half of a very large island just north of the Australian mainland. This area is very primitive, with few cities and even fewer roads. Native peoples still live in small isolated groups.

The Solomon Islands are just off the coast of Papua New Guinea, and were the site of some of the bloodiest battles in World War II. Further north, the Marshall Islands also saw much of the fighting, and the clear waters around the island chains are littered with sunken ships. A few of the isolated Marshall Islands were used for testing nuclear weapons by the United States. To the east, the Fiji Islands are one of the most popular vacation areas in Oceania, and the majority of the islands have been set apart as uninhabited nature preserves.

Thousands of other small islands dot Oceania, many still governed by European countries, Australia, or the United States. Others have gained their independence and are sovereign countries with their own governments.

Government

Mainland Australia was colonized by British explorers around 1788. The country was first used as a convict colony, where criminals convicted of petty crimes were sent to live. Later when gold was discovered, more free men and families decided to make it their new home.

Australia became an independent state in 1901, and ended its last constitutional ties with the United Kingdom in 1986. New Zealand became independent in 1907.The Australian and New Zealand governments, along with the Cook and Solomon Islands, are considered a parliamentary democracy. Queen Elizabeth II remains the chief of state, while an appointed Governor General heads the government. The prime minister is generally elected. Laws are determined by a House of Representatives, also called “Parliament”. Some of these people are elected and some are chosen from party lists.

During World War II, the Japanese took control of many of the islands scattered through the Southern Pacific Ocean. Later, after the end of the war, the United Nations divided the islands up between several member countries as Trust Territories. These trusteeships were designed to lead the Islands into developing democratic governments, and most of these areas are now independent countries. France, Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain, and the United States all received large groups of islands to govern.

The French Polynesian Islands and New Caledonia are both considered a collectivity (territory) of France. They remain under the control of the French president, with an assigned representative. For French Polynesia, local heads of government are elected, and the islands maintain their own elected legislation to create laws. New Caledonia is under the legislature of France.

The islands of the Federated States of Micronesia and the Marshall Islands are both independent countries with a constitutional government, in association with the United States. The government is headed by a president, who is elected every four years by the legislature (people who create the laws). The legislature is elected by the people. Both countries gained independence from the United States in 1986, but still receive a lot of aid from the US.

The United States also owns several island territories which are now considered wildlife refuges. No people live on these islands, except for extended visits by scientists. Access is granted only by special permits from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services.

Europe is actually the western portion of the huge landmass known as “Eurasia”. This area has been divided into two continents because of both geographic and cultural differences. The western areas, called Europe, have different ethnic groups, lifestyles, and dominant religions. The weather is also very different from Asia.

Europe and Asia are separated geographically by the Ural Mountains and the Caspian and Black Seas. The Ural Mountains run north and south through Russia and split the Asian side of Russia from European Russia, though it is all one big country. The Caspian and Black Seas sit just north of the Middle East.

Europe is one of the smallest continents; only Australia is smaller. Regardless of its size, Europe still has 47 countries. Many of these are tiny but have been independent in some form or another for centuries. The most influential countries of the last 500 years are found in Europe. England, Spain, France, Germany, and Holland have all had huge roles in spreading Western philosophy, civilization, and Christianity throughout the world. Colonization and exploration started in Europe, and these countries still impact the rest of the world today.

The southern countries of Europe are situated on the border of the Mediterranean Sea, and experience hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The summers in countries like Italy, Spain, and Greece frequently have little or no rain. Many tourists flock to these areas to enjoy the perfect weather. Winters are cool but not cold, and rain is more common. Many ancient crops are grown here, like olives and grapes. Fresh vegetables can be found year-round.

Temperate forests covered most of central Europe for thousands of years. Now, most of these forests have been destroyed to build cities, towns, and farms, but the weather is still the same. With warm summers, cold winters, an abundance of rainfall, Europe is known for cloudy, foggy weather and an abundance of green vegetation year-round. Central Europe gets quite a bit of snow in the winter, and the mountains can be snowy all year. Some areas in Eastern Europe can get hot and dryer in the summer, where the central plains are located. The island countries of Ireland and England have weather similar to the rest of Central Europe, but because they are surrounded by the ocean, they tend to be even milder and wetter.

Northern Europe reaches up into the Arctic Circle where the summers are light and the winters long and dark. Norwegian countries like Sweden and Norway are generally very cold in the winter with huge amounts of snow and ice. Summers don’t get very hot in northern Europe and are only a few months long.

RegionsThere are three main regions in Europe. The Southern area around the Mediterranean sea, the central area, and northern Europe. Culturally, there are also differences between Eastern Europe and the areas farther west and south.

The southern areas of Europe are known as the Mediterranean countries, because they are located around the shores of that large sea. Known for their mild, pleasant summers and the banquet of exotic locations to visit, these areas are popular vacation destinations. Greece was the foundation of one of the oldest and longest lasting ancient civilizations. Much of our modern western world finds its origins in ancient Greece. Many ideas about government and philosophy began in these areas along the shores of the Mediterranean. The city-state of Athens established what many historians believe was the first democratic government.

As the ancient Greek civilization faded, it was replaced by another Mediterranean super-power. The Roman Empire started about 800 years before Jesus was born, and lasted as a large empire for over 1000 years. Though the Roman civilization was democratic for hundreds of years, by the time of Christ it had become a huge empire with a series of kings, some corrupt, some insane, and some excellent leaders. Most of the western way of life came from either the Greeks or the Romans.

Central Europe is home to many tiny countries. These countries contain descendants of the original tribal people as well as the Romans. Through hundreds of years of invasion and occupation, Romans, Vikings, and other people from many different empires moved in and out of the land. The introduction of Christianity by the Roman Catholic Church brought even more changes.

The island country of England was once home to tribal people known as the Druids. Today, England is the homeland of a huge chunk of the world’s countries. The United States, Canada, Australia, and many smaller countries and territories were colonized by the English. Most of these countries are still a part of the European Commonwealth, though they have their own governments.

Northern Europe is made up of the Scandinavian countries- Sweden, Norway, and Finland, as well as western Russia. These areas are bitterly cold in the winter, and most places were once covered with dense coniferous (evergreen) forests. The people from Scandinavia were once known as the Vikings, and they were sea people who left their homes in great ships to raid and plunder other countries. Later, they also spread to Iceland and Greenland. People in these countries today are descended from the Vikings, as well as the people in places that they raided and conquered, such as northern France.

GovernmentThe Mediterranean countries in southern Italy were the location of some of the oldest world empires on earth. The ancient Greeks formed what may have been the first completely democratic government. Other ancient governments include monarchies with emperors or kings, republics, dictatorships, and more. These ancient governments often slipped from one form of government to another through the years. Many of our modern governments are based on principles from ancient Greece and Rome.

Most of the central countries in Europe have had some form of monarchy for hundreds of years. The idea that God gave the gift of ruling to a certain family or person was a common belief during much of the philosophy of the dark ages. While most modern monarchies are not founded on the principles of God-given superiority, the idea of a ruling family stuck around. In most constitutional monarchies, the government is headed by a prime minister or president and his cabinet of advisors, while the head of state is the king or queen. The laws are created by a legislature or parliament. This parliament is usually elected, all or in part, by the people. The United Kingdom (England, Scotland, and Wales), Norway, Sweden, Spain, and the Netherlands are all constitutional monarchies.

It used to be said that the sun never sat on Great Britain. This is because so much of the world was colonized by England. The United States, Canada, Australia, South Africa, and India are just some of the large countries that were once owned by Great Britain. The United States is the only country to have ever gained independence from England through war, but many of the other territories and colonies are now independent while still being a part of the British Commonwealth. In this aspect, Great Britain may still be the land on which the sun never sets.

Unlike many other European countries, France and several of the central and eastern countries do not have a monarchy. France is a republic with a democratically elected president and prime minister. Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Poland, and Finland are all republics, or a similar type of government.

Italy is the home of both the ancient Roman Empire and the Roman Catholic Church. Today Italy is a republic, with elected leaders. The Vatican City is an independent state with its own government, planted right in the middle of Rome and surrounded by a high wall. The Roman Catholic Church is directed from the Vatican City.

The European Union is an intergovernmental organization established in 1951, and now has 27 member countries. These are all still independent countries, but the European Union does have the power to make and enforce some laws and has its own flag and currency.

Lapbook Assembly Choices(see photos on how to fold and glue your folders together)

We recommend using Zip Dry Glue.

Choice #1 -Do not glue your folders together until you have completely finished both folders. It is easier to work with one folder instead of two or three glued together.

Choice #2 -Glue your folders together before beginning. Some children like to see the entire project as they work on it. It helps with keeping up with which folder you are supposed to be working in. The choices are completely up to you and your child!

How Long Does it Take to Complete the Lapbook?

Doing a study guide page and mini-booklet a day, a 2-folder lapbook takes about two weeks to complete. However, you can expand the study portion and make it last as long as you like!

Keep in mind that children of the same age can have very different academic and motor skills. Some children may have trouble writing in some of the smaller spaces of this lapbook. If this

North America is a land full of forests and grassland, stretching from the Arctic Circle in the north to the tropic Caribbean. The two largest countries, Canada and the United States, cover nearly the entire continent, but there are 23 countries all together.

The northern tundra is cold all year long, covering parts of Canada, the United States and Greenland. Summer thaws leave the land wet and boggy. Quick-growing plants struggle through short summers before the blankets of snow and ice again cover the land. No trees grow in these places, and very few people live here.

The northern forests of Canada and the United States cover thousands of acres. Lakes and rivers dot the Canadian wilderness, and abundant rain causes many different kinds of plants to be found there. These forests are covered with deep snow all winter, and temperatures can be below freezing for months, while the summers are warm and humid.

The central part of North America is flat and grassy, stretched out like a giant bowl between mountain ranges. This area is called the plains, or prairie. Violent thunderstorms form quickly in the summertime, and these areas get more tornadoes than any other part of the world. The southern plains are sweltering in the summer, with temperatures over 100° Fahrenheit and very high humidity. Northern plains get bitterly cold in the winter, and often have dangerous blizzards.

The Rocky Mountains rise in the west, covered with temperate (an area with four seasons) forests and very high granite peaks. This is one of the longest mountain ranges in the world, stretching all the way down the continent from the Arctic Circle to Central America. Many large mountain areas are still uninhabited by humans.

The southwestern area of North America is covered by dry deserts, mostly mountains and canyons which receive less than 10 inches of rain a year. The dry air in the deserts causes temperatures to soar in the daytime, but drop very quickly at night. Higher elevations have cold winters and hot summers, while deserts nearer the equator don’t have seasons.

The subtropical rainforest is found near the equator in Central America, and on little islands throughout the turquoise Caribbean Sea. These areas don’t have obvious seasons, and stay warm and humid all year with heavy daily rainfall. More plants grow in each square mile than in any other biome, and it can be so crowded with plants that it is almost impossible to walk!

Folding a Lapbook Base

Gather the number of folders required for the project. Fold them flat as seen here.

Original fold line

For each folder, fold the left and right sides inward toward the original line to create two flaps. Crease so that the highest part of each flap is touching the original line. It is important not to let the two flaps overlap. You may want

to take a ruler and run it down each crease to

make it sharper.

Supplies Need:

½ inch three-ring binder

5 tabs (if you are using our copywork and/or notebooking pages, you will need to have 7 tabs. Label with copywork and notebooking)

Geography and Climate

South America is a continent located mostly in the southern hemisphere, south of North America. The two continents are connected by a small strip of land called Central America and are bordered by the Pacific and Atlantic oceans on each side. South America is a tear-drop shaped continent, with the large rounded end at the north, near the equator, and the long end pointing south.

The northern area of South America is all tropical, and the equator intersects it near the northern edge. Most of this region is tropical rainforest. The Amazon river system is the longest in the world, and it is surrounded by the Amazon rainforest. This area is one of the largest rainforests. It is full of plant and animal species found nowhere else in the world. Columbia and the other northern countries in South America are also mostly rainforest areas. The weather is always hot and wet here, with temperatures normally from 70 to 90 degrees and up to 350 inches of rain a year. There are also some areas of drier land in the tropical north. Grassland and desert in southern Brazil experience wet and dry seasons with similar temperatures in winter and summer.

The longest mountain range in the world is located in South America, and it is also one of the tallest. The Andes Mountains lay on the west side of the continent, all the way from Columbia in the north, to the frozen southern tip. These mountains are warmer in the north near the equator, and in central South America they have a moderate temperature. The southern Andes and the highest elevations along the whole range are considered alpine areas. Alpine areas are cool in the summer and cold in the winter, with mostly small plants, grasses, and mosses.

On the east side of the mountains are found large areas of dry deserts and scrubland. Because the rain from the ocean storms falls on the Andes, very little moisture is found on the far side of the mountains. The Patagonian Desert in Argentina and Chile is the largest desert in the Americas. It includes both arid (very dry) and semi-arid (less dry) scrubland and grassland. The driest place in the world is in Chile, on the western side of the Andes. This is in the Atacama Desert, which is mostly made up of rock, sand, and salt lakes. This area receives less than one tenth of an inch of rain a year!

The southern tip of South America extends southward towards Antarctica in a long point. This area is very cold at the southern end, and the people who live here have developed ways to survive the extreme year-round cold. The southern tip of South America is only 600 miles from Antarctica!

Every seven years or so, the currents in the southern Pacific Ocean change. This is called El Nińo and La Nińa, and causes drought and heat in some areas, and heavy rainfall in other areas. This effects South America and areas of North America.

Regions

South America is only the fourth-largest continent in the world, but it has many record-setting features. The Amazon is the largest rainforest on earth, and contains over half of the world’s rainforest. More animals and plants live in rainforests then in any other biome (habitat). The Amazon forest covers much of Brazil, but it also covers parts of other countries. Most of Colombia and Venezuela are covered with rainforest, although only some of it is the Amazon.

The rainforest in South America is losing ground because people “slash and burn” the forest to build towns and farms. It is a complicated problem, because the rainforest is part of the entire world’s ecosystem, producing a huge amount of the oxygen we need. However, in the relatively poor countries where the rainforests are located, they are not really considered a natural resource because they don’t help the people make any money. Local people need the land, while the world needs the forest.

The Amazon River basin is the largest and longest in the world, and the Amazon River system with its tributaries dumps more water into the ocean than any other river system. This isn’t surprising, considering it rains 200 days out of the year in the rainforest! The Amazon is home to a wide variety of unique animals and tribes of native people.

Running along the western side of the continent, the Andes is the longest mountain range in the world, and one of the tallest with many peaks over 20,000 feet. The oxygen levels are very low in high altitudes, and some people live as high as 17,000 feet above sea level. The people groups who have lived in these high mountains have developed interesting adaptations in their cells which allow them to cope with the thin air. Mine workers in the mountains near the Atacama desert have lived temporarily up to 19,000 feet!

Argentina covers a large area of southern and central South America. Most of Argentina is dry scrubland and desert. Many huge cattle ranches sprawl across Argentina, and being a cowboy is just as normal here as in the western United States. In South America, a cowboy is called a “guacho”. Like in the United States, the habits and lifestyles of the cowboys used to be considered poor manners, and people with more 'class' looked down on them. Now, in both South and North America, the way of the cowboy is considered a part of national history and a source of pride. Many people now want to be cowboys and guachos!
