HELP FOR ORPHANS IN CAPE TOWNCape Town, South Africa
Love working with children? Then this is the project for you. Many of the areas you’ll be volunteering at are located in underprivileged, under-resourced communities so any help and all contributions are gratefully received. You’ll assist teachers by providing love, care and support for infants aged from newborn to seven years-old. Many will be awaiting adoption, having been abandoned or lost their families. Others may have been removed from abusive home lives.
Days will be spent storytelling, playing simple games with babies and assisting with feeding and afternoon nap times. Other practical activities include helping with cooking, laundry and gardening.
Living in a shared volunteer house you’ll soon be forming new friendships and sharing stories. At the weekend, enjoy Cape Town’s beautiful beaches, top-notch restaurants and vibrant nightlife. You will also receive a free Cape Peninsula day tour and 2 hr surf lesson.

Located at Gansbaai – the best place in the world to see Great White sharks – you will help with vital marine research in this unique environment at the tip of Africa.Shark populations worldwide are increasingly threatened and there’s still a lot of research that is needed to understand and interpret the behaviour of these awesome predators. The knowledge and skills acquired by participating in this project are unparalleled.
Most of your time at sea will be spent aboard a shark cage diving vessel as a crew member, helping out with cage diving operations, shark observation and collecting data. There will be the opportunity to take the plunge and cage dive yourself. And don’t be surprised to also spot whales, dolphins, seals and penguins, all of which inhabit these waters.
Back on land, you may attend lectures on ocean conservation, basic seamanship and shark biology. To get the most out of your experience and have more time cage-diving, consider staying longer; anywhere from 2 to 12 weeks.

Based at a 25,000-hectare multi-purpose centre that’s home to the largest concentration of ‘Big Five’ animals (lion, elephant, rhino, leopard and buffalo) in the Eastern Cape, it’s little wonder this safari and game reserve has been voted a world leader.
As a volunteer on this unique placement, you will work 8am-5pm Monday to Friday, conserving, researching and protecting the ‘Big Five’ and other flora and fauna. Assist in efforts such as animal tracking and monitoring, reserve rehabilitation and eco-education. Weekly tasks may include taking local communities through environmental and social awareness work and helping in the care and nursing of animals at the Animal Rehabilitation Centre and Born Free Big Cat Sanctuaries. The dedication and efforts of volunteers will make a positive impact on creating environmental, social and financial stability of this special habitat, and champion the preservation of its animals for future generations to come.

This project caters for schools that lack the resources to provide students with any physical education. While the focus is on sport, the priority is to develop life skills among underprivileged South African children. This helps bridge social divides, keeps children off the streets, encourages teamwork and builds their confidence.
Visiting several schools each day aboard a dedicated mini-bus, you will work as part of a team of approximately 12 volunteers plus full-time coaching staff. During school holidays, you will coach at activity camps and run tournaments which may include team sports such as football, cricket and basketball. There are also opportunities to introduce non-sporting activities, like arts and field trips. A township tour and fantastic bush camp dinner under the stars are included and you can also visit Kragga Kama game reserve, the surfing mecca of Jeffreys Bay and Bloukrans Bungee (if you dare!) at your own expense.

Highlights• Work with and care for large predators • Volunteer in a ‘Big 5’ reserve• Meet the Lion Whisperer himself
Kevin Richardson (also known as the ‘Lion Whisperer’) is a high-profile conservationist who runs The Lion Whisperer Wildlife Sanctuary. This project is devoted to caring and enriching the lives of the animals that live there, including lions, spotted and striped hyenas, black leopards, wildebeest and giraffes.
Volunteers will play an integral part in restoring Welgedacht Game Reserve back to its former glory. The reserve will be the first free-roaming Big Five of its kind in Gauteng. As most of the reserve was previously farmland, there are challenges in returning the land to its ideal condition.
The project will also involve maintaining, caring and managing the animals on the 45,000-hectare farm. Volunteer activities are varied and will include preparing food, game counts, anti-poaching walks and enclosure cleaning.
