Nelson Mandela was the first black President of South Africa

He campaigned to end Apartheid – a former social system in South Africa in which black people and people from other racial groups did not have the same political and economic rights as white people and were forced to live separately from white people.

HIV/AIDS is a disease which is very common in parts of Africa

AIDS is a very serious disease that is caused by a tiny germ called a virus. When you are healthy, your body can fight off diseases, like Superman fighting the bad guys.

Even if you do get sick, your body can fight the germs and make you well again. But when you have AIDS, your body cannot protect you. That’s why people with AIDS get very sick and can die.

Mums and Dads with AIDS sometimes die without anyone to care for their children.

Siyabuswa is north-east of the city of Pretoria

This lady is called Anna, and she lives in a rural township called Siyabuswa, in Gauteng Province.

Anna’s husband died of AIDS; she has four children to care for.

WorldShare helped Anna to get a job and for her children to go to a good school.

WorldShare helped start a school in 2003, for children orphaned by

HIV/AIDS

Lunga was one of Grace School’s first pupils. Because of WorldShare’s support, he has been able to go to university and get a good job in engineering!

You can help change the lives of children in South Africa, by joining in WorldShare’s Cookie Challenge!
