African Climate and
Development Initiative
WHO WE ARE
• Launched in 2011 by the VC as a strategic initiative, to “facilitate and substantially extend climate change research and education at UCT”.
• Achieved institute status in 2018.
• UCT’s collective response to the challenge of climate change.
• We co-ordinate and centralise resources to enable inter- and transdisciplinary research, teaching and learning in the areas of climate change and sustainable development.
• Also now the ARUA Centre of Excellence for Climate Change and Development in Africa
The ACDI is a university-wide initiative at the University of Cape Town which supports collaborative research and training in climate change and development.
WHO WE ARE
Our Vision
• Our vision is of a developing world that has transitioned onto an equitable, sustainable, low carbon development trajectory.
Our Mission
• We aim to contribute to achieving this vision through innovative research, training, knowledge generation and transfer, and advice that supports and triggers this transformation.
WHO WE ARE
Our Goals
• Goal 1: To enable and facilitate innovative inter- and transdisciplinary research on issues at the nexus of climate change and development across UCT, South Africa, Africa, and globally.
• Goal 2: To develop capacity of a new generation of African researchers and practitioners with the knowledge, experience and competencies to function effectively towards addressing complex climate change challenge at multiple scales, and in multiple contexts.
