News Items and Global Link (page 1 of 2)The AFS Wiki’s news items index appears in a volunteer’s Global Link home page (bottom left).

Unless it’s a minor edit, best practice is to create a new page as a news item.

Click Edit tab at the top, then above the most recent item, follow exactly the formatting below.

Choose a strong headline.

At bottom, click Save page button.

Click your new link (should be red.)

CTN formatting policy: over 200 words requires a Wiki page.

Let’s assume you already have an item written, and all image/file(s) selected.

When in doubt, remember…

CREATE: How to build the page, upload files, display them on the page.

TINKER: Adjust formatting for readability.

NARROW: Shorten original item to a blurb with link to AFS Wiki.

Put everything onto the Wiki. You can adjust and modify later!

Make a new page as a News Item. Click your new link, and click the Edit tab.

Paste in all of your text.

Open a New Tab, open the AFS Wiki again, and go to upload page.

Upload: https://www.afswiki.org/index.php/Special:Upload

These file types are the only approved types for upload to the Wiki. png, jpg, gif, eps, pdf, doc, wmv (video!), mp3 (sound!), xls, ppt, odt ,ods

Check Ignore Any Warnings box, then click Upload file button (far right).

When new page appears, copy the name of your files, and paste into your new Wiki page (bottom center). File:Nameoffile.format

Note: size limits (max: 4MB) are rigid.

You have already pasted the file name(s) you copied from the Upload page(s). Now modify:

Image/Graphic: [[File:File.png|200px|thumb|left|alt text]] px is short for “pixels,” or image size; alt text is space to write in a caption.

To get the vertical line symbol, hold SHIFT + press BACKSLASH (above ENTER key).

You lose bold, italics, and bullets when you make a wiki page, but let’s get them back!Highlight text to format, and press Bold or Italics buttons.

Open Advanced drop-down for additional features.Click Show preview or Save page button(s).

Wiki Tables: How to build a table within Wiki

Bottom line: time-consuming but possible.You cannot copy and paste a table/chart, unless you take a screenshot (Print Scrn key, next to F12 key) of an Excel file, and upload that image to the AFS wiki.

In Edit mode, click Advanced button, then press the Table icon (1, to the left) to create a blank table.Adjust to your liking (# of rows, columns,

sortable) and click Insert button (2, bottom left).A blank table will appear in your page. Replace

Header text with column titles; replace Cell text with cell data.

Wiki Tables: An Easy Method for Complex Charts

Open a new browser tab, and follow this link: http://excel2wiki.net/wikipedia.php

Open an excel spreadsheet.

Copy any cells that you’ll want displayed as a table in the Wiki.

Paste into link below, and press Submit Query button.

Copy result and paste into your wiki page (must be in Edit mode).

Save or preview your page.
