Cebu is an elongated island located in the main island group of the Visayaswith the island of Negros to its west and the islands of Leyte and Bohol to its east. Strategically located in Central Philippines, Cebu has been inhabited by Hindus and Muslims and had been a flourishing trading center even before the arrival of Ferdinand Magellan and the Spanish expedition. Upon his arrival in Cebu in 1521, Magellan persuaded the natives of Cebu to pledge allegiance to the King of Spain and converted Rajah Humabon, the king of Cebu, his wife and hundreds of followers to Christianity.

After baptizing the king and queen and giving them their Christian names, Carlos and Juana, Magellan presented the statue of the Santo Niño (Holy Child) to the queen. Magellan then erected a large wooden cross on the shores of Cebu and converted hundreds of islanders to Christianity. Magellan turned his attention to the ruler of nearby Mactan Island, Datu Lapu-lapu. Lapu-lapu was not willing to pledge his allegiance to the King of Spain, which led to the Battle of Mactan. Lapu-lapuand his warriors repelled the Spanish forces of Magellan and killed Magellan in the process.

The Cebu Metropolitan Area is composed of the cities of Cebu, Danao, Mandaue, Lapu-lapu and Talisay as well as 8 other towns and municipalities. Considered as the largest metropolitan area outside of Metro Manila, Metro Cebu has a population of around 2.7 million people in 2010. Its major industries include tourism, business process outsourcing, furniture-making and ship-building.

The city of Lapu-lapu and the Mactan-Cebu International Airport-MCIA-are both located in the island of Mactan, which is connected to the main island of Cebu by two bridges.

The Philippines has several international airports, thetwo busiest of which are the Ninoy AquinoInternational Airport (NAIA) in Metro Manila and theMactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) in MetroCebu. The country’s flag carrier, Philippine Airlines(PAL), services several international and domesticroutes together with other low-cost carriers likeCebu Pacific, PAL Express, Air Asia Zest and TigerAirways. Almost every major international airlinethat services Asia has services to and from Manilawhile several international airlines fly to and fromCebu. Booking several months in advance mayallow you to avail of the different low-farepromotions of these airlines. As of this writing, flights from Hong Kong, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur,Kota Kinabalu, Busan, Seoul, Bangkok, Tokyo, Taipeiand Qatar fly directly to Cebu.

Passengers coming in through Manilashould be able to get connecting flightsto Cebu as multiple domestic flightsbetween Manila and Cebu are offered byseveral airlines. However, please takenote that most international flightscoming into Manila (with the exception ofPhilippine-based airlines like PAL and CebuPacific as well as selected foreign airlineswhich will transfer to NAIA 3 by mid-2014 use the NAIA Terminal 1 while allthe domestic flights fly out of NAIATerminal 2, NAIA Terminal 3 or the oldManila Domestic Airport. Transferringbetween these terminals entail exiting theterminal and taking a shuttle or publictransportation to the other terminals.

Cebu has two kinds of taxis: the yellowtaxis, which transport passengersexclusively from the airport to the cityand back, and the white taxis, theregular taxis which can take you to anypoint of Metro Cebu. Yellow taxis aregenerally safer since their trips aremonitored, readily available but moreexpensive than white taxis. Yellow taxisare located right outside the arrival areaof the MCIA. The white taxis arecheaper than the yellow taxis but itsavailability varies according to the timeof your arrival. White taxis are parkedin front of the Domestic Departure Areaof the MCIA.

To get to the Domestic DepartureArea, one must go through the ArrivalArea and take the elevator up to theDeparture Area and exit the terminalthrough the Domestic Departure Areaexit doors. Both taxis are metered somake sure that the meter is flaggeddown at the start of your trip.Getting to the heart of Cebu City fromthe MCIA takes around 30-60 minutes, depending on the traffic.

The main mode of public transportationaround Cebu City is the colorful jeepney,a mini-truck-like passenger vehicle inwhich commuters sit on a pair of bench-like seats at the back. While taking thejeepney might be quite an experienceand would be the cheaper alternative, itsvaried routes may be confusing to first-time visitors and the commuters’ lack ofpersonal space inside it might provedisconcerting to some people. The basicfare of the jeepney in Metro Cebu isPh₱8 and this increases depending on thedistance of the trip. It is advisable toprepare a small bill denomination forjeepney payment.

In the smaller streets of Cebu’scomponent cities, one would see athree-wheeled vehicle made up ofa motorcycle and a coveredsidecar full of people and goods orluggage. This public transportationis called the tricycle and peopleuse these to access areas withnarrower streets or streets notserviced by jeepneys. The basicfare is Ph₱8, which is then addedonto depending on the distance ofthe trip.

White taxis are readily availablearound Cebu City during most of theday, getting one during rush hour0600-0900hr, 1100-1300hr and 1600-2000hr) might be difficult. Getting ataxi at the different hotels and mallsare advisable as taxi attendantsusually take down the taxi franchisename and license plate number andgive you a transport slip with contactnumbers of the relevant governmentagencies. The flag-down rate for taxisis Ph₱40 for the first kilometer, Ph₱3.50for the next 500 meters and Ph₱3.50for every 300 meters thereafter.

There are taxi drivers who will try tohaggle on the trip fare with youinstead of using the taxi meter. Useof the taxi meter is required by lawso always insist on using the taximeter. Also, prepare Ph₱20, Ph₱50 orPh₱100 bills for your fare as somedrivers might not have enough changefor large bills. Getting around CebuCity usually takes between 30-50minutes and between Ph₱100- Ph₱300,depending on the traffic. A tip ofPh₱10 - Ph₱20 is usually acceptable butyou can always give more if the driveris especially helpful.

Self-drive and chauffeur-drivencar rentals are also available inCebu City. A self-driven mid-sized 4-door sedan has anaverage rental of Ph₱2,500 -Ph₱3,000 for eight hours.Chauffeur-driven rentals will costsignificantly more.
