After four years of waiting for that one section to finish, pizza that only some paid for, and illiterate articles, the senior editors of The Warrior are proud to present the crown jewel of our publication: the 2013 Senior Supplement. Within these pages you will find se-niors’ future plans, complete with statistics on our college atten-dance and future advice from our beloved teachers. To begin, our senior editors have the final word on life at Niskayuna High School.

As I near the end of my high school career I am in-creasingly met with hints of nostalgia for things I was relieved summer vacation liberated me from. While ecstatic about my coming years at college, it has oc-curred to me that never have I matured so much as within these walls, and for the reason that so much has been outgrown, I find myself wishing for for those out-of-date trends. My advice to you is to appreciate. Expe-rience the cliques that halt in the middle of the halls, the temperamental geothermal system, and the ran-dom silly band fads, and enjoy them (or at least don’t completely despise them). You’ll reminisce about these days later and be grateful you collected the memories. ~Junia George

High school goes by too fast, so don’t take anything for granted. Never stop working hard, and always strive to do the right thing. Live for yourself and don’t pretend to be someone you’re not. Be happy, be you, and be sure to make a difference. ~Olivia Jaquith

I have changed immensely throughout my high school years and I am blessed to have created life long rela-tionships with so many amazing people. As I look back in the years to come the things I will miss the most are the Friday night lights, the memories I have made with great friends and the way my life was before I went away to Oberlin. Life’s good. Do good, do well, and be happy. ~Christopher Herman

My time at Niskayuna is a time I know I will never for-get, because high school changed my life. It has taught me so many lessons about how to deal with people, both those who I love and those who I hate not to mention those who love and hate me. High school has also taught me that the nicer you are, the more you can eventually get away with. Not everyone will love you, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be nice. Life is long and first impressions aren’t always right. So never fear young’uns. Keep your head up and your minds open, and I promise you will get through your next couple of years here.

~Alex Whisenhunt

And now, The Warrior is proud to present the next chapter for the Class of 2013.

In high school, take pride in being a nerd or a misfit. Embrace your quirks, and others will embrace them too. Hopefully. ~Eunu Song

The memories and friendships you make in high school will last forever, so make the most of your time here.

~Swati Mehrotra

Stay classy. ~Alison Xu

Where are we going?

A Final LessonNiskayuna teachers offer some parting words of wisdom to the Class of 2013:

My best wish for you as you move on is to find your passion; whether it be a passion for school, work, sports, the arts. Whatever it may be, use your passion to guide and direct you. Passion makes school thrilling, work fun and joy inevitable! “Anything you do, Let it come from you, Then it will be new. Give us more to see.” –Stephen Sondheim —Mr. Hughes

Travel. Take a semester abroad. Heck - take a year off and backpack through . . . wherever. This is the best time to do it and it will change your life. Experience everything. Become part of the culture. (And please take me with you.) —Mrs. Salvin

Graduations, no matter the level, are celebra-tory moments, a time to not only acknowledge the individual accomplishments, but to reflect on rela-tionships with family, friends, teachers and institu-tions. It’s a time to take stock of who you are, to get excited about the many opportunities and freedoms awaiting you on the other side of the stage. The poet Robert Frost in his poem “Haec Fabula Docet” speaks of a blind man going alone – relying only on his cane. The moral Frost reminds us as he concludes is, “All those who try to go it sole alone,/Too proud be beholden for relief,/Are absolutely sure to come to grief.” Never forget those who helped you, always try to help others, stay connected to the family, the friends, the teachers, and the institutions which helped to get you to the other side of that stage. Congratulations and best wishes. —Mr. Bach

Celebrate, then get to work! Repeat as ap-propriate. For those of you attending college, engage and enjoy. They were the best four years. Best wishes to you all! —Mrs. Black

Goodbyes are hard. As someone who’s been lucky enough to have almost half of you in class, I’ll find that harder than ever this year. Of course, you will have it even harder, saying goodbye to your home to go to college. The only thing that makes goodbyes bearable is the hellos. You will meet such wonderful people in the coming year! There will be new friends, room-mates and teachers at college. As you say these hellos, remember that first impressions count for more than any others. A bad first impression is almost impossible to overcome and can last for years. So, when you meet new people, try to present your best self. Remember there are no real do-overs in life, and these people are going to be important to you. I promise you that the hellos will make up for the goodbyes. —Mr. Edgar

My best advice to you, as you, like all the great heroes before you, embark on the perilous journey of life, is this: endeavor to be as curious and unflinching about life as Thoreau, as willing to give of your heart as Baby Suggs, and as patient and ac-cepting of human frailty as Atticus. Choose “being over not being,” and love over hate, like all the great heroes who came before you. —Dr. Moore

We have truly enjoyed knowing you and working with you these past four years. As you pre-pare to leave Niskayuna High School, please remem-ber the many teachers and staff who cared about you and strived to help you during your time here. Aris-totle stated that “happiness depends upon ourselves.” Therefore, it is time for you to find what you love to do, devote yourself to it and surely you will find the fulfillment you seek. I know I speak on behalf of the entire Foreign Language Department when I say we wish you all the best! —Mr. Alston

At the risk of offending my colleagues who teach Latin, I’d like to thank the War-rior seniors for asking me for this valedictory as we both leave Niskayuna High School. I came here twelve years ago, just as they were entering the grade school, little antici-pating where their wayward steps would take them, some even to my classrooms, poor souls. Now we step into a new mystery on the road of “What’s next?” While retirement and graduation are both endings, they clearly mark beginnings that we have earned and prepared for, occasionally with sagacity. So, as we leave these rambling halls behind we know we have been shaped by the lives and relationships we came to know here. Though we cannot all quote Gatsby or Shakespeare, we too can row against the current or strut our hours on the stage and store it in fond memory. Farewell.

—Russell McDowell

Mr. McDowell is one of those teachers that teaches you more than the required curriculum. He teaches life les-sons that resonate far beyond the classroom. I, along with countless other students, will miss him for all we’ve learned in his class. —James Chalermkraivuth

Mr. McDowell is a venerable, sagacious teacher who has inspired his students to step out of their comfort zone, and to not take any element of literature for granted. His teach-ings extend beyond the classroom, and I will carry them with me for the rest of my life. —Matt Terwilliger

Mr. McDowell never failed to make his classes interesting and funny. He will always be my favorite English teacher.

—Reshmi Kurup

Mr. McDowell made class fun and enjoyable. I learned so much that will stick with me in the future. I use McVocab in my papers still. —Andi Reich

He’s the bomb diggity. —Kina Zhou

You can’t beat that wizard shirt, you just can’t. Sir Russell McDaddy is the king. —Mandy Borges

A Gregarious Goodbye to Mr. McDowellAfter countless years at Niskayuna, English teacher Russell McDowell is retiring. He will be sorely missed not only by his students, but by those who have had the honor of working with him as he served as an advisor for The Warrior. Mr. McDowell is the teacher everyone has wanted to have, so Niskayuna is fortunate to have had him around for so long. Thank you so much for everything, Mr. McDowell. We owe you. We’ll miss you more than any of your vocabulary words could possibly de-scribe, and we hope we’ve made you proud.

On this page, Mr. McDowell leaves a parting note for the Class of 2013, followed by words from graduating seniors who remember what they will always remember him for.

Mr. McDowell is a teacher who really cares about teaching. His classes are always interesting and he makes coming to class enjoyable. —Liz Farley

Mr. McDowell is a very engaging and thoughtful teach-er. He was able to teach the ability to search for and find meaning in a book rather than just memorizing plot which helped me get a lot more out of them.

—Christopher Downing

Mr. McDowell was a wonderful teacher and I am beyond grateful to have been in his AP English class. His pas-sion for learning is present in every lesson and he will be greatly missed by all.

—Mary Kate Moran

In and out of the classroom, Mr. McDowell is an amazing man who is a pleasure to talk to. His thoughts on not only English class but life in general are very insightful and meaningful. NHS is losing a great educator and a great man. —Joe Nuqui
