All of these definitions of a soil are correct in their own sense.

But, in this Lesson, let us define and understand a soil in the perspective of growing crops in the interest of a farmer.





Upper most crust of the earth is called soil.

Soil is a natural body made by nature and not by man.

Soil is a living organism. With proper management, the soil thrives, breathes, and drinks in the falling rain.

This natural resource supports plant life and thereby all living beings on this earth.





Soil functions to:

• Sustain plant and animal productivity;

• Regulate water flow through the environment;

• Oppose (buffer) environmental changes in air quality, water quality and global climate;

• Support human health and habitation.
