A Family Di scussion GuideAFTER THE

SERMON

April 12, 2020

Parents, in today’s sermon, Bro. Steve will teach your family about the resurrection of Jesus. Use the sermon and questions below to help strengthen the faith of your child(ren) on this Easter Sunday.

HAPPY EASTER!He i s r isen!

Jesus’ resurrection was predestined. Acts 2:22–24

Let’s talk about having a plan.

What are some important events we plan for as a family?(Vacations, school, travel to see relatives, birthdays, holidays, new baby, etc.)

Why is it important to plan? (We plan so our events take place as we desire.)

What might happen if we didn’t have a plan for important events in life?(Things may not go well; we may not enjoy our event as much.)

(Read Acts 2:23. If possible, have your child read the verse.)

Acts 2:23“This Man, delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of godless men and put Him to death.”

Verse 23 says that Jesus dying on the cross was a part of God’s plan. Why was this a good plan?(See verse 24—Jesus’ death paved the way for His victory over death and sin.)

Acts 2:24“But God raised Him up again, putting an end to the agony of death, since it was impossible for Him to be held in its power.”

What might happen to our world if God didn’t have a plan?(Evil would take over; no one would be in control; we would have no hope.)

Why should we be glad that God has a plan?(Allow child(ren) to answer. Then, share why you are glad God has a plan.)

happy EASTER!

Jesus’ resurrection was prophesied. Acts 2:25–35

Let’s talk about knowing the future.

I know about our future as a family—Lord willing, this year we will __________. (Fill in the blank with any birthdays you will celebrate, big family event or happenings, trips you have planned, holidays you will enjoy, etc.)

God knows all about our future as a family. What are some things God knows about our future?(He knows what we will do, where we will go, what plans He has for us.)

Jeremiah 29:11“‘For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope.’”

During the time the Bible was being written, God allowed certain people to know the future, they were called prophets. King David was one of those prophets.

Do you remember what Bro. Steve said God told David about the future?(God showed David that one day Jesus would be raised from the dead (David’s Psalm 16:8–11 is quoted in Acts 2:25–28). David was not afraid of death because of his relationship with the Lord. Since Jesus would be resurrected from the dead, David knew he would be delivered from death.)

What did Bro. Steve say happens when a Christian dies?(The power of Jesus’ resurrection says that even when we die, God will not let death destroy the fellowship we enjoy with the Lord. We have this faith because Jesus was raised from the dead and offers us eternal life with Him.)

Should our family be worried about the future?(No, the Bible tell us not to worry (Philippians 4:6) but instead to trust in the Lord (Proverbs 3:5–6). Jesus has a great plan for each of us and for our family.)

2.

happy EASTER!

Jesus’ resurrection is piercing. Acts 2:36–37

Let’s talk about what to do when we sin.

Peter was preaching to a huge crowd of Jewish people about what they had done wrong to Jesus.

What are the three ways the Jewish people responded according to verse 37?(They heard the truth from Peter, their hearts hurt for what they had done, and they asked what they could do to make it right.)

Acts 2:37“Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, ‘Brethren, what shall we do?’”

How do you know when you have done something you shouldn’t have done?(You have a bad feeling; you get an inner sense of guilt; the Holy Spirit convicts you of your sin.)

What should we do when we know we have done something wrong?(Repent (turn away from the bad we did), ask God and others to forgive us, and make it right with the person we sinned against.)

3.

Jesus’ resurrection is pardoning. Acts 2:38–41

Let’s talk about repentance.

In Acts 2:37, the Jewish people knew they had done wrong, and they asked the question, “What should we do?”

What was Peter’s answer in verse 38?(Parent(s) if appropriate, have your child read verse 38. The answer is to repent.)

Acts 2:38“Peter said to them, ‘Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.’”

What does Bro. Steve say it means to repent?(Bro. Steve likes to say that repentance is doing a “spiritual 180”—turning completely away from your sin and turning to Jesus.)

Peter’s answer for the Jewish people was to repent (verse 38) and be saved (verse 40).

Acts 2:40“And with many other words he solemnly testified and kept on exhorting them, saying, ‘Be saved from this perverse generation!’”

(Parent(s), share your salvation story with your family and excitedly talk about the hope you have in the plan God has for your future.)

(Then, invite any family member who is not a Christian to repent of their sins (Luke 13:3), believe that Jesus died on the cross for their sin and God raised Him from the dead (Acts 16:31), and receive Jesus as their Lord and Savior (John 1:12).)
