Agawa Canyon 4-Day Tour Coming soon! September 25-25, 2018

CRAZY FOR CHRISTMAS tells the story of a newlywed couple who couldn't be more different when it comes to dealing with the holidays. This

warm and wacky show is full of laughs, cheer, classic Christmas carols and festive original songs! Between laughs and carols, guests will also enjoy our festive meal. Just like your family's holiday dinner, our meal is served family-style so be sure to help yourself to seconds, eh!

COME FROM AWAY is the breathtaking new musical that Toronto embraced with open arms and had audiences leaving the theatre night after night claiming they were “proud to be Canadian!” It’s been called the “edge of the world.” The weather is wild, but the locals never lack for

warmth. And it’s here, in Newfoundland, where a remote town became the epicenter of a remarkable true story filled with unusual characters, unexpected camaraderie and uncommon generosity.

Join your RWTO friends for a leisurely luncheon cruise on the Niagara Belle. This paddle wheeler will depart from Queenston Heights to cruise the lower Niagara River, a

unique way to enjoy the beauty and history of the area. Shopping time will follow in delightful Niagara on the Lake with some surprise stops. Pricing and details to follow.

Based on a true story, The King and I traces the blossoming romance between an English governess and the King of 19th Century Siam. Part love story and part culture clash comedy, the show contains some of musical theatre's greatest numbers, from Shall We Dance to

Getting to Know You, to I Whistle a Happy Tune.

A LOVE STORY WITH TWISTS AND TUNES. A charming but fraudulent salesman arrives in River City to work his usual scam – only to find that a bill of goods can be the real deal. With melodies that include the rousing “Seventy-Six

Trombones,” this musical-comedy classic will delight the whole family.

Look forward, as well, to an opportunity to join a four-day colour tour to Northern Ontario and the Agawa Canyon.

Artists presented include Pete Seeger, Ian and Sylvia, Bob Dylan, Gordon Lightfoot, Joan Baez, The Kingston Trio and more.”

ALLERGIES AND DIET RESTRICTIONS: If you have food allergies or dietary restrictions, it is important that we know about these so that accommodations can be made for you. We need to have the information BEFORE the luncheon. Please call Shelley Goodman at 416-491-1683 or e-mail her at [email protected] to let her know about these allergies or restrictions. She will confirm the change with you once you have advised her. If fruit for dessert is the only change you require, then you will not have to inform her every month. This will be done automatically. Please keep Shelley informed if there are changes during the year. We want to ensure that you enjoy each and every lunch!

NOTE: Please try to pay, in advance, for the next luncheon at the previous luncheon. If for some reason you are unable to attend, your cheque will be held for a future luncheon. This will enable us to establish a more accurate number of attendees and the Estate will be better able to accommodate your special needs. Shelley

CAN YOU HELP....... Doctors and Pharmacists in rural communities in developing countries do not have prescription pill bottles to give a patient when he receives medication from the doctor. The patient is given his pills, which are wrapped in newsprint or put in a paper envelope. By the time he has walked the mile or two or more, the pills are lost or have started to disintegrate in the heat. If you have empty pill bottles, we will be collecting them in January and February. These pill bottles will be taken to the developing countries by travelers who support their clinics and/or facilities. Please remove the labels from the bottles. Carol

It is very important that your cheques for the luncheons are received well in advance. We are required, by The Estate Banquet Centre, to give them the number of meals required a week in advance so they are able to accommodate everyone. This often does happen! If your cheque is late or you decide, at the last minute, to

attend, the Estate has not prepared a lunch for you. In order to avoid putting The Estate and our Branch Executives in a difficult position, please ensure that Susan Urie is aware of your attendance by receiving your cheque in advance. Many thanks to those who honour this. RWTO Executive

Thank you to our many talented members for sharing your crafts with us.

Heritage Train Trip All Aboard--The York Durham Heritage Railway! "All aboard!" The 'Train on the Moraine's' dining room car was filled to capacity, as the RWTO group boarded in Uxbridge. Window tables for four, were occupied as we vigorously rubbed our hands together, waiting for the train car to warm up. Only one brave soul, removed her jacket. All others kept bundled up on the train, which slowly rattled along the tracks to Lincolnville. The journey began with steamy cups of coffee and tea, followed by a pork tenderloin lunch. A guided coach car tour of the surroundings, was enjoyed by the passengers as they took in the sights and were greeted by a few blazing, red sumacs!

Carol Everitt counted the passengers as they came "all aboard", once again. The coach bus took us to Main Street, Uxbridge, for a short shopping trip. A circle around town to round up all of our passengers and "all aboard", onto Leaskdale. Our final stop, was the manse and the historic Presbyterian Church, where Reverend

Page 7: After the Bell - RWTO/OERO · 2017. 11. 28. · Wind’, ‘This Land’, ‘Four Strong Winds’, and ‘Five Hundred Miles’. Artists presented include Pete Seeger, Ian and Sylvia,

Ewan McDonald and Lucy Maud Montgomery made their home for over 15 years. Before the tour, we gathered at the church for a quick pick-me-up of hot tea and scones. Our large group was divided into three and we toured the church, the grounds and the manse. L.M.M., in addition to writing, was very active in the community. Did you know that L.M.M. was called 'Maud', and not Lucy? Her inspiration for 11 of the 22 novels came from this lovely, rural area, north of Uxbridge. Maud cared for her grandmother in PEI and was secretly engaged for 6 years during this time. Upon her grandmother's death, Maud came to join and marry Ewan, at the age of 36. Two sons, were born to the couple; Chester and Stuart. This amazing woman, already famous by the time she arrived in Leaskdale, continued to flourish, write, and care for her husband, who suffered from 'religious melancholia' and give back to the community. L.M.M. died in Toronto at the age of 63 years. A very enjoyable day ended with a final, "All Aboard!" the bus. We once again,

headed towards Kennedy Commons, saturated with knowledge and content to be returning to our homes...until the next RWTO outing?

NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS A New Year's resolution is a tradition, most common in the Western Hemisphere but also found in the Eastern Hemisphere, in which a person resolves to change an undesired trait or behavior, to accomplish a personal goal or otherwise improve their life.

Top 10 New Year’s Resolutions For Seniors

1. Exercise for 10 minutes every day 2. Explore new volunteer opportunities 3. Revive an old friendship 4. Spend more time with the grandkids 5. Make healthier dessert decisions 6. Revisit an old pastime 7. Challenge your brain regularly 8. Be conscious about your overall health

The ancient Babylonians made the first New Year’s resolutions.

Who started the tradition of making New Year’s resolutions?

Possibly the ancient Babylonians, about 4,000 years ago.

The tradition continued in ancient Rome.

Writing your New Year’s resolutions? Thank a Protestant! The practice of making New Year’s resolutions was more

common in countries with a strong Protestant influence. For

example, in 1951, New Year’s resolutions were thought of as a

“tradition” in countries like Australia, England, Wales, Scotland,

Northern Ireland and South Africa. Meanwhile, Latin American,

Scandinavian, Asian and Eastern European countries didn’t

recognize the tradition.

Culture affects New Year’s resolutions.

The Amish kids tended to focus on activities that would help

them achieve their goals. The middle-class American kids

tended to focus on results.

New Year’s resolutions vary around the world.

Health-related resolutions dominated in the US and Egypt. Visitors from Australia and Japan were looking for love. In Russia, meanwhile, education was the top priority. And in India, career goals were king.

Highland Creek Public School is fortunate to be part of a vibrant community and we are gearing up to celebrate 100 wonderful years. We invite you to join our 100th Anniversary celebrations which will be taking place on Friday April 27 & Saturday April 28, 2018.
