Chanel No 5 A e s t h e t i c s : The perfume package is a cuboid shape box. Its sides and top/bottom are narrower than the front and back. The main colour of the box is white, but the borders and text are black. It is a simple, sophisticated packaging and is an appropriate size and style to match the bottle.C o s t : The cost for the entire product, a fifty millilitre bottle is around £55.C l i e n t : The client for this perfume is women of any age, with a sophisticated taste. The product is designed well for this audience as the design is feminine, elegant and simple. The brand name ‘Chanel’ is enlarged and centralised, to draw attention to it, as Chanel is a trusted and popular brand which many women would tend to choose to purchase.

E n v i r o n m e n t : The packaging of this product is made of card, and can probably be recycled. The package fits the perfume bottle perfectly and is not bigger than it needs to be, therefore no packaging is wasted.Safety: The product is agreeably safe to use as the bottle has no sharp edges, nor does the packaging. However, the bottle is made from glass, so it breaking is a possible hazard.S i z e : The product, approximately 15x8cm, is a suitable size for the perfume bottle.F u n c t i o n : The product is designed to encase the perfume bottle and it does this task well as it is an appropriate shape, size, colour and style for the perfume bottle and also for the target client.M a t e r i a l s : The package is made from card, which is recyclable, and it is shiny on the outside as if it has been laminated. This adds to the sleek, stylish look of the perfume and package. This is a suitable material, as it is strong enough to hold the bottle but still light. It has been successfully mass produced all over the world since 1922.

Sans serif is a style of font such as Arial that is often used on web pages or in magazines as is simple and easy to read.

Serif is a style of font such as Century Schoolbook that is often used in books and newspapers as it is plain and legible and has more of a traditional feel.

Decorative fonts such as Jokerman which can often be

used for posters and logos as they are eye-catching and exciting.

Script fonts like Bradley Hand ITC which mimic handwriting

and gives a more personal and traditional feel.

This is my original logo design. I scanned it into Photoshop to edit it.

I then coloured it and removed parts that I didn’t like. I used the burn and dodge tools to give the flower and leaves a more 3D effect

I added the sun again in a different position and applied a glow effect. I added some text to complete the logo.

Original

I have taken a basic net design and changed it using TechSoft Design Tools to create these three different net designs. I used the grid lock tool so that the dimensions were easier to alter accurately, and then I moved around the lines to create different net shapes.

B a r c o d eBarcodes are used in shops, and are scanned by a cashier to register the price. Barcodes are usually placed on the back or bottom of packaging as they are not very attractive and can mess up the design.

R e c y c l e S y m b o lThe recycle symbol is used to indicate that the packaging is widely recycled, and is also placed out of sight on the back/bottom.

U s e B y S y m b o lThis symbol is used to indicate how long the product can be used for after being opened, before it turns bad. It is also placed on the back to keep from ruining the design.

F l a m m a b l e S y m b o lThis symbol is used to show that the product is flammable, and it is for the user’s safety. It will also be placed on the back to prevent it from distracting attention from the design.

‘ E ’ S y m b o lThe ‘e’ symbol is used to show that ‘The Average System of Weights and Measures’ is being used. It must be placed in the same field of vision as the quantity, which is usually on the front of the package, at the bottom. It must be at least 3mm in height.

T h e T i d y m a n L o g oThis symbol, known as ‘The Tidyman’ is the official logo of the Keep Britain Tidy campaign, aiming to reduce littering in Britain. It encourages the user to dispose of the packaging correctly. It is generally placed out of plain sight on the back of packaging.

This design was a royal, luxurious design, and the red-crimson colours suit the regal theme. The background is a Chinese silk pattern, so it has an Asian element in the design, along with the logo and the title font. However, I did not think that the design was sophisticated enough to fit the audience of the product.

This was my first design. I liked the colour scheme and the background image of the blossom tree has a very calm, stylish look. However, it did not tie in very well with the logo and the product name, so I decided not to use this design for my final product.

Page 11: Aftershave/Perfume Project

I chose this design to be my final design. I like the colour scheme and the images of the flowers and the Asian landscape tie in with the Asian theme and the natural, sophisticated style that I was trying to create. I changed the name of the product to fit in with the colour and the images.

Copyright : The copyright logo is used to show that the product is copyright and cannot be copied by anyone else. If somebody has used a design, logo or name similar to the one I have used, I could not use it if it had been copyrighted as it was not originally my idea. I would incorporate the logo into my design so that nobody else could my ideas.

Environmental issues : As my package is made from card, it uses trees. Designers should take care to use trees from sustainable forests, or use materials that have already been recycled. The ink and solvents that have been used for printing and gluing etc. Should be disposed of properly so that it is ensured the environment is not harmed.

Google images: When using images from Google, it should be taken into consideration whether or not the images used are appropriate, or are they property of somebody else, are they copyrighted? Images should only be used if they are un-copyrighted and are appropriate for the public.

Cultural/religious issues: Designers need to be sensitive to the fact that some images/ themes could be offensive to people from specific religions or cultures. Images that are used for products that will be viewed by the public need to be suitable for everyone so that they do not cause offence to certain people.

Page 13: Aftershave/Perfume Project

My perfume box was cut precisely and accurately, however during the 2D net design process, I made the net incorrectly so it would not fold. It should have mirrored the flap at the top. The flap at the bottom was too large, as during the design process I made my net smaller but I forgot to resize theflap. Also, the top and bottom flaps were too long and so the box would not close. As I made a few errors on the 2D design, I had to amend these by hand by sketching over my net and cutting it to the correct size with a craft knife. Now, however, the recycle and the use by logo at the bottom are not visible on the physical product as the sizes had to be changed and they became part of the flap that is folded in.

This is my finished product. It fits together quite well since I fixed the net design, however it is slightly wonky and the toplid does not stay closed for very long. The recycle logos and theuse by logo cannot be seen on the finished product. When I physically altered the net, the top and bottom flaps were toolong and I had to shorten them by measuring and cutting them to the right size, though when I did this, the logos became placed onbeneath the fold line and so they were folded under.

If I were to re-do this process, I would ensure that my 2D netdesign was in proportion and there were no size errors. Also,I would have chosen my first design as I believe it would havelooked more effective and I prefer the logo. I feel like the product title on this design is too faded and does not stand out enough to catch the eye of a customer.

Page 14: Aftershave/Perfume Project

Peer Evaluation• I would make the name of the perfume more prominent on the box. And the

text in general.• I like the background on it, it makes it look very professional.• You have used the symbols effectively.• It is relevant to the theme.Evaluated by Calum Hughes.• The packaging is unique and looks extremely professional. It follows the

Asian theme very well.• Your logo is very effective and would be easily recognised.• You have included the ingredients and other information but I think the

writing could be a bit clearer and it is quite blury on the package not making it stand out as much as it could. This could be the printers fault though!

• You have not incorporated all the possible signs and symbols but the bar code is placed nicely on the bottom of the packaging so it would be easy to scan!

The box fits together perfectly and is very well designed, well done!Evaluated by Emily Stevenson.

Page 15: Aftershave/Perfume Project

ComparisonSimilarities:•The boxes are of a similar shape and size.•The position of the text is also similar.•The logos are simple an are placed near the top and they draw the eye of the customer.•The customer that the products are aimed at would most likely be young women that can afford the perfumes.•The package is made from the same recyclable cardboard material. They are both suitable for recycling and are environmentally friendly.•Both of the products have the same function, and they are both suitable for this.•Both products are made from cardboard, so they are not of a dangerous glass/plastic material, so sharp edges are unlikely, however, paper cuts may be a problem...

Differences:•The colour schemes are very different, so they could suit people with different kinds of personalities: for example, the Giorgio perfume box may appeal more to happy, bright, fun people whereas my perfume box may be more to the taste of more sophisticated, demure audiences.•The cost to make the Giorgio box would be higher, as the logo and the title are embossed and are shiny and gold. My box is just plain cardboard and all effects are just printed onto the card.•My net had a few errors, so the Giorgio box may be stronger and therefore more suitable for the function of holding perfume.•The Giorgio box looks more professional as it is simple but effective and the colour scheme and logo make it a distinctive look which will stand out and the brand will be noticed. My box has quite a fussy background image and the brand name and the logo don’t stand out much compared to the Giorgio box.
