Art from the Heart free art workshops for breast cancer survivors facilitated by Pat Hayes, M.S., Art Therapy Fall 2013 Workshops Finding Treasure - Scrimshaw-style Yupo Engraving New! This one session explores an eco-friendly interpretation of the old New England whaler’s craft of scrimshaw using Yupo, a polypropylene paper, oil pastels and scratch tools to create an embellishment for a treasure box or a stand-alone piece. Limited to 12 participants. Held at the D’Amour Cancer Center in Springfield. One Session - Saturday, September 21 • 9:30-3:30 The Ol’ Switcheroo - Designing Fimo Switchplates In this one session we will learn a variety of fimo clay techniques to create a unique decorative switchplate to liven up any room. Taught by survivor Linda Jacque who sells her fimo switchplates at many craft shows and co- led by Pat Hayes. Held at the First Congregational Church in Sunderland. One Session - Saturday, October 5 • 9:30-3:30 Homage to the Masters - Creating Ceramic Tiles In this workshop we will take our inspiration from well-known works of art to create an interpretation on a ceramic tile. We’ll roll out the clay, carve it, emboss it, deboss it, build up layers and more. Taught by talented survivor Holly Murray, the ceramics professor at Springfield College. Held at the Visual Arts Center at Springfield College. Limited to 12 participants, preference to newcomers. Two Sessions - Saturday, October 19 and 26 • 9:30-3:30 Fat Chance - Exploring Surface Design Techniques New! In this one session we will create fat quarters on cotton fabrics using a variety of surface design techniques such as stamping, stenciling, printing and some resists that can be later used in a number of fabric projects. Limited to 12 participants. Held at the D’Amour Cancer Center in Springfield. One Session - Saturday, November 2 • 9:30-3:30 Picking Up the Pieces - No-sew Fabric Collage In this one session we will make a fabric collage wall hanging using a canvas back and a variety of cotton fabrics. Led by fiber artist and survivor Susan Boss and Pat Hayes. No sewing experience necessary. Limited to 12, preference to newcomers. Held at the D’Amour Cancer Center in Springfield. One Session - Saturday, November 9 • 9:30-3:30 Looking Behind You - Reverse Pastel Painting NEW! In this one workshop we will experiment with a variation of reverse glass painting using clear acetate, metallic foils, and oil pastels to create a shimmering painting. No painting experience necessary. Limited to 12. Held at the D’Amour Cancer Center in Springfield. One Session - Saturday, November 16 • 9:30-3:30 ’Tis the Season - Great Expressions of Holiday Cheer The best cards are the ones that come from the heart and are made by hand. We will make our own cards for all occasions using a variety of decorative papers, stencils, stamps, and more. These cards will rival anything you’d find in an upscale gallery. Held at the First Congregational Church in Florence.
