Selection ProceduresThe procedure for selecting the cooling duty and the powerabsorbed by the compressors of the AG HA units isindicated below.1. The tables Standard AG HA unit performance allow todetermine the cooling capacity, power absorbed by thecompressor motors with cooled water temperatures bet-

    ween +4

    C and +9

C, ambient air temperatures between +25C and +52C.

    2. Although the data can be interpolated, extrapolation is not

permitted. For conditions other than those shown in thetables, contact McQuay Product Group.

    3. The performance of the AG HA units refers to 5C of t ofchilled water. The increase or reduction of the flow rate ofchilled water produces a reduction and an increase in the

cooling performance which is negligible. To ensure thecorrect functioning of the exchanger, it is advisable tomaintain the waters t within 3C 6C.

    4. The performance figures are based on fouling factor of0.044 m2C/kW. In the event of different values, thecorrection coefficients indicated in Table 2 should be used.

    5. The performance is influenced by air density. Table 3gives the correction factors for the various altitudes abovesea level.

    6. The power absorbed values given in the standardperformance tables refer to the compressors only. Thecurrent absorbed by the fans is given in the electricalcharacteristics table.

    8. To obtain the flow resistance through the evaporator, usethe diagram on page 16.

Example of selection of an AG HA unitData:Cooling capacity required: 250 kWAmbient air temperature: +46CTemperature of cooled water: from 12 to 7CRefrigerant: HCFC22Fouling factor: 0.044 m2C/kWAltitude above sea level: 900 mGlycol content: none

    1. The cooling capacity correction coefficient for installation

at 900 m above sea level (Table 3) is 0.979.2. The corrected cooling capacity is

    250 kW/0.979 = 255,3 kW.

    3. The cooling unit to satisfy this capacity is AG HA 070.2ST 022. This unit will have the following operating data:

    Cooling capacity:260,1 kW x 0.979 = 254,6 kW

    Power absorbed by compressors:88,8 kW x 1.015 = 90,1 kW.

    Chilled water flow rate: 240,5 kW/4.186/(12-7) = 12,16 l/s.

Pressure drop indicated by the diagram with a cooled waterflow of 12,16 l/s on the straight line corresponding to the

unit AG HA 070.2 we find a pressure drop of 60 kPa.

Water content in cooling circuitsThe cooled water distribution circuits should have aminimum water content to avoid excessive intermittentoperation of the compressors. In fact, each time thecompressor starts up, an excessive quantity of oil goes from

the compressors sump and simultaneously there is a rise inthe temperature of the compressor motors stator due to theinrush current during the start-up. To prevent damage to thecompressors, McQuay has envisaged the application of adevice to limit frequent stops and restarts. During the spanof one hour there will be no more than 6 starts of thecompressor. The plant side should therefore ensure that theoverall water content allows a more constant functioning ofthe unit and consequently greater environmental comfort. The minimum installation water content envisaged shouldbe calculated with a certain approximation using this for-mula:

    (1) Q = P x p 25

where:Q = minimum content of the plant expressed in litres.P = cooling capacity of the plant expressed in Wp = minimum unloading capacity percentage

A plant with a 230 kW cooling capacity in which the coolingunit AG HA 070.2 ST 022 equipped with two compressors isapplied, should have a minimum content of water calculatedon the basis of the minimum cooling capacity, which for thistype of equipment is 25% of the nominal capacity.

    Q = 230,000 x 0.25 = 2300 l25

For a more accurate determination of the quantity of water,it is advisable to contact the designer of the plant. When thesum of the water content of the evaporator, the pipes of thehydraulic circuit and the terminals (coils, exchangers, etc.) islower than the value obtained, it would be better to opt for aAG HA McQuay cooling unit equipped with inertial tank(optional).

    Installation notes

HandlingAll moving and handling may damage the unit if someconditions are not scrupulously observed. The units shouldbe lifted with a crane using long ropes anchored to theholes on the frame of the units base and by using the upperspacer bars (see accessory 80) to prevent the ropes fromdamaging the condenser coils.

LocationThe AG HA units are produced for outside installation onroofs, floors or below ground level on condition that the areais free from obstacles for the passage of the condensationair. The unit should be positioned on solid foundations andperfectly level; in the case of installation on roofs or floors, itmay be advisable to arrange the use of suitable weightdistribution beams. When the units are installed on theground, a concrete base at least 250 mm wider and longerthan the units footprint should be laid. Furthermore, thisbase should be sufficiently robust to withstand the unitweight mentioned in the technical data table. When theunits are positioned in areas which are easily accessible bypersons or animals, it is advisable to fit guards to protectthe condenser coil guards (see accessory 32) and, whennecessary, also guards to protect the compressor (seeaccessory 33).

Space requirementsThe AG HA units are air-cooled, hence it is important toobserve the minimum distances which guarantee the bestventilation of the condenser coils. Limitations of space re-

ducing the air flow could cause significant reductions incooling capacity, an increase in electricity consumption and,in some cases, the unit may stop functioning as a result ofthe high condensation pressure. The fans do not allow theuse of ducts which have high flow resistance, hence isshould be ensured that the output air cannot recycle itself

inside the condenser coils. The units should be positionedsuch that there is sufficient distance between the coils andany obstacles to improve ventilation and also to facilitate in-spection. When two or more units are positioned side byside it is recommended that the condenser coils are at least3000 mm distance from one another. Smaller distancescould cause the recirculation of hot air. If the units arepositioned in places surrounded by walls or obstacles of thesame height as the units, the units should be at least 3000mm from said obstacles. For other installation solutions, consult McQuay technicians.

Acoustic protectionThe low noise levels of the AG HA units means that theymeet most of the most restrictive regulations, thanks to the

availability of two versions with different sound levels: thestandard version (ST), the version with sound proofing cabi-net on compressors (CN). When the noise level must meetspecial requirements it will be necessary to pay themaximum attention to ensure the perfect insulation of theunit from the support base by applying appropriate vibration-dampening devices (see accessories 84 and 85), applyingvibration-dampening mounts on the water pipes and on theelectrical connections.

We reserve the right to make changes in design and construction at any time without notice, thus the cover picture is not binding.

To supply and install, where specified in the project n ..... unit(s)aircooled water chiller with cooling capacity of ..... kW, to cool .....m3/sec. of water from ..... C to ..... working with ..... C ambienttemperature. The unit should work with electricity at ..... V. 3ph.50Hz. The electrical power absorbed should not overcome ..... kW.The units COP will be at least ..... at the working conditions of the

project. Part load COP will be at least ..... at the working conditionsof the project. For the units with 2 compressors the chillers wll ha-ve 2 indipendent refrigerant circuits, with the respective electronicmicroprocessor will alow the starting of the compressors. Each chil-ler will be factory assembled on a robust baseframe made of zinccoated steel, with zinc coated panels, protected by an epoxy coa-ted paint. The painting of the chillers to conform to the 500 hourssalt spray test method 6061 (no. 141 STD) The unit will be testedat full load in the factory at the nominal working conditions and wa-ter temperatures. Before shipment a full test will be held to avoidany losses, and the units will be filled with oil and 134a refrigerant.Units will have the following components:General- All units are designed and manufactured in accordancewith applicable selections of the following which are equivalent toAmerican Air-conditioning industry applicable codes:

Rating of chillers: UNI 9018Construction of pressure vessel: TV Standards (optional)Electrical codes: IEC 204-1 CEI 44-5 Elect. & Safety CodesSafety Codes: CEI-EN 60204-1 CodesManufacturing Quality Stds: ISO 9001Compressors- Will incorporate the scroll compressors to achievea high volumetric efficiency, due to constant contact with the sidesof the scroll spirals and the total absence of discharge and suctionvalves. Each compressor will be equipped with a check valve onthe discharge to mantain the pump-down condition and henceavoid the migration of the refrigerating gas from the condenser tothe evaporator. Will incorporate semi-hermetic reciprocating com-pressors consisting of multiple cylinders with suction and dischargevalves. The forced lubrication of the crankshaft bearings and of thebig end bearings will be achieved by using a gear pump which isindependent of the compressors direction of rotation. Thecrankshaft of each compressor will be statically and dynamicallybalanced. In addition, each compressor will be fitted with oildifferential pressure switch. Each scroll or reciprocating compres-sor will be charged with the necessary quantity of lubricant andsupplied with the following accessories as standard: sump heater, electric motor protection module, discharge and suction shut-offvalves (optional for reciprocating).Evaporator - the units will be supplied with (1) direct expansionevaporator with refrigerant inside the tubes and water outside,(shell side) with carbon steel tube sheets, with straight copper tu-bes that are spirally wound internally for higher efficiencies, expan-ded on the tube plates. Each evaporator will have two refrigerantcircuits one for each compressor. Testing and operation pressure, refrig. side working pressure 15 Bar and water side 10 Bar.Condenser coil - the condenser coils are constructed with inter-nally enchanced seamless copper tubes having a "V" and "W" con-figuration and arranged in a staggered row pattern and mechani-cally expanded into lanced and rippled aluminium fins with full fincollars for higher efficiencies. The spacing between the fins are gi-ven by a collar that will increase the surface area in connectionwith the tubes, protecting them from ambient corrosion. The coilswill have an integral sybcooler circuit which provides sufficient sub-cooling to effectively eliminate the possibility of liquid flashing andincrease the units efficiency of +5 -7% without an increase in powerabsorbed, and the surface area will be dimensioned in a way to

permit an air velocity not greater than 2,5 m/sec. Leak tested at 10Bar and pressure tested at 30 Bar.Condenser fans - the fans are used in conjunction with the con-denser coils, they are of the impeller type with aerofoil polypropyle-ne blades for higher efficiencies and lower noise. The air dischargeis vertical and each fan will be coupled to the electrical motor, with

the casing made in aluminium and supplied as standard totalyenclosed with 6 poles and capable to work to ambient temperaturesof -40C to +55C. Each fan will be controlled by the condensingpressure of the relevent cooling circuit. There is also an accidentprotection within the motors. Condenser motors with Class F mo-tors. Cast aluminium condenser fan blades will be supplied asoption.Thermostatic expansion valve - each refrigerant circuit will beequipped with all the necessary components in order to ensure theworkings and service (dehydration filter, liquid sight glass, shut offvalve, load connection and pressure switch etc). Thermostatic ex-pansion valve regulates the injection of refrigerant liquid intoevaporators. Injection is controlled by the refrigerant superheat.Control panel- field power connection, control interlock terminals, and unit control system shall be centrally located in a weatherproof

cabinet accessible through a key locked door. Power and startingcontrols shall be separate from safety and operating controls in dif-ferent compartments of the same panel.Power and starting com-partment shall be protected by a plastic cover. Power and startingcontrols shall include fuses and contactors for each compressorwinding and fan motors. Operating and safety controls shall includeenergy saving control; emergency stop switch; solid-state protec-tion for compressor motor; differential oil pressure safety switch (foreach compressor); high and low pressure cut-out switch (for eachrefrigerant circuit); anti-freeze thermostat; compressor lead-lagswitch; cut-out switch for each compressor; operating hour meter(for each compressor).Regulation of cooling capacity - each unit will have a controllerfor the control and operation of the unit with 4, 6 or 8 steps of capa-city control depending on the number of compressors. All of the in-formation regarding the unit will be reported on the controller dis-play with 32 characters and with the internal built in calender andclock this will switch the unit ON/OFF during day time all year long. The microprocessor permits a "soft start" function throughout an ex-ternal signal will allow a load reduction of the unit when there arepeaks of absorbed current. In addition a connection to a BMSsystem can be made via an "open protocol" or an interface via amodem to a personnal computer. All general alarms can be memo-rised by an easy analysis of the faults and their causes.High and low temperature function - the units will be providedwith an automatic control for condensing pressure which ensuresthe working at low external temperatures down to +5C, because ofthe working cycle of the condenser fans, in respect to the conden-sing pressure. The unit needs to be able to work with high external

    ambient temperatures up to 52

C and capable of starting at 46

C atfully loaded condition. Low temperature starting with fantrol (stan-dard) will be less than 0C and with speedtrol (option) this will be-18 CRefrigerant piping- refrigerant circuit shall include a factory insu-lated suction line, manual liquid line shut-off valve with chargingconnection; refrigerant filter drier with replaceable core; liquid sightglass/moisture indicator; liquid line solenoid valve; thermostatic ex-pansion valve, and 27 bar relief valve. Records for the refrigerantpressure manometer and oil will be placed inside the control cabi-net. Flexible refrigerant piping hot gas muffler, though not required, can also be offered as option.
