GIN GAMETHE
Laughter on the 23rd Floor
“An unhappy game of romantic follow-the-leader explodes into murder one weekend at the home of Sir Henry and Lucy Angkatell, arguably Christie’s finest comic grande dame. Dr. Cristow, the wealthy lothario, is at the center of the trouble when, assembled in one place, we find his dull but devoted wife Gerda, his mistress and prominent sculptor Henrietta and his former lover, Hollywood film star Veronica… As the list of romantic associations grow so does the list of potential suspects… Nearly everyone has a motive, but only one of them did the deed.” AgathaChristie.com
“ A genuine crowd pleaser and a worthwhile evening of entertainment.” Leah D. Frank, New York Times
September 7 – October 7, 2018
40thSeason
“The play’s brilliance lies in its simplicity and economy. The metaphor of a common card game
played by two people raises universal issues… This will become one of the great classics of the American theater.” Thomas E. Luddy, review of The Gin Game in Library Journal.
Winner of Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1978, nominated for four Tony Awards
January 18 – February 17, 2019
“In 1925, a heedless Kentucky spelunker, Floyd Collins, got trapped
underground while searching for a cave big enough to turn into a tourist attraction. The rescue effort gained national attention with reporters being sent from all over to cover the story, becoming
the first media circus, everyone looking to cash in on Floyd’s misfortune.”
Variety. Filled with colorful townsfolk, song and dance, all based on a true event.
A Lucille Lortel Award Winner for Best Musical.

ByNeil Simon
“Laughter on the 23rd Floor – a fictionalized look at the backstage
chaos involved in producing one of the landmarks of television’s golden age. Inspired by Simon’s own early career experience as a junior writer for Your Show of Shows, Laughter focuses on the temperamental star, modeled after Sid Caesar, and the writers of the TV comedy-variety show in the 1950s, ‘Regarded as one of Simon’s funniest plays!’ ”

THEHOLLOW
Agatha Christie
By Michael ParkerAn American farce
The new American Ambassador to Britain, tells his family he’s off to Scotland to play golf, his wife and daughter announce weekend plans of their own. Perkins, the butler, watches stoically as each leaves and as each secretly returns to a seemingly empty house. Enter Harry’s secretary plus the Captain of Marine Corps Embassy Security in the wake of a bomb threat, and the embassy is sealed. Even the imperturbable Perkins is drawn into the shenanigans.“Hilarious – will keep you in constant laughter”
(Corpus Christi Caller Times).“The funniest two hours of stage comedy in recent memory.” -Midland Reporter / Telegram
Nov. 9 – Dec. 9, 2018
“Time Flies when we are having Fun“
As we begin our fortieth season, in cooperation with the City of Newport Beach Parks, Beaches and Recreation Department, that phrase certainly applies to us, and to our loyal season ticket holders and other
supporting patrons. Our first production was in 1980, even though it was the 1979-80 season. We couldn’t get going enough to put up the first two scheduled shows in the 1979 part of that season. It was all so new to us.
The challenges haven’t changed, we’ve just gotten used to them. We still struggle to get rights to produce the plays and hope good actors will audition. Most of us have been volunteers in this endeavor, including all the performers you see on stage. Talk about loving theater! Please join us again in celebrating this milestone. If you don’t have an audience, you don’t have a show!
With greatest appreciation and affection,
Rae Cohen, President of Friends of Newport Theatre Arts Center
