The “Friday Night Stars” featured both the FEI Grand Prix Freestyle also presented by Havensafe Farm. Laura Graves (USA) rode Verdades to a score of 84.535% to win the freestyle and to secure their third qualifying score for the FEI Dressage World Cup™ Final. “I don’t count anything until it’s for certain,” said Graves. “Once I went down centerline, I thought, ‘Ok, hopefully this is my ticket to Sweden.’ “Honestly I started thinking about this venue and the sponsors that mean so much to me,” commented Graves on how she felt during her ride on Friday night. “This is my last freestyle here this year. That was what went through my mind, not anything through the test. I wasn’t hardly thinking about that, I was thinking more about all of what has happened in six years here for me. It was different perspective for me.” Kasey Perry-Glass (USA) and Goerklintgaards Dublet took second place in the freestyle with a score of 83.875%, their second highest score ever. “He had a lot of energy. I wasn’t expecting that,” commented Perry-Glass on the 16-year-old Danish Warmblood gelding by Diamond Hit owned by Diane Perry. “Coming off of a show last week I thought he was going to be a little more tired, but he was actually more lit than I’ve felt him in a while. We had little bucks and switches. It’s a good thing for him.” Adrienne Lyle (USA) and Salvino came in third with a score of 80.160%, also their second- highest score together. “What I was happy with is that he really just pulled it all together when we went down centerline,” said Lyle of the 12-year-old Hanoverian gelding by Sandro Hit owned by Betsy Juliano LLC. “He really let me keep my leg on and push him into the bridle better and get a little bit more consistent power throughout the test.” Judge at C, Irina Maknami commented, “For me, it was really a pleasure to judge these fantastically talented ladies with their amazing horses. It’s really a special feeling when you see them and think, ‘I’m so lucky to be a judge,’ to be able to enjoy this. I think they’re just great. There was so much progress, and I wish them the best of luck at the World Cup Finals.” Betsy Juliano of Havensafe Farm said, “It was breathtaking for me. The point of being here year after year and why we value being here at this wonderful facility is to watch and promote the horse’s training. One of the great joys, in addition to knowing these three women – who are all very dear to me – is watching their horses improve year after year. I was so thrilled to stand there with these three who I love so much and to see them do so well. It doesn’t get better than that.” The seventh annual Florida International Youth Dressage Championships (FIYDC) were held during AGDF 8 and featured young riders in five divisions competing in FEI competition for top honors. The 2019 FIYDC offered competition for riders in the Under 25, Young Rider, Junior Rider, Children and Pony divisions, offering them a chance to compete on the big stage in the Global International Arena at AGDF and showcase their talent at one of the world’s largest and most high-profile dressage competitions. This year there were 13 horse and rider pairs in the FEI U25 division, 11 entries in the FEI Young Rider division, six in the FEI Junior Rider Division, one in the FEI Children division, and three in the FEI Pony Rider division. The riders represented four countries, including Canada, Germany, Spain, and the United States. Natalia Bacariza Danguillecourt (ESP), a 17-year-old from Madrid, Spain, was the division winner in both the FEI Young Rider and FEI Junior Rider divisions. Danguillecourt rode Dhannie Ymas, a 12-year-old Hanoverian gelding by Don Crusador owned by Yeguada de Ymas in the Young Rider division. The pair earned a score of 72.843% in the FEI Young Rider Team test on Friday, a score of 72.500% in the FEI Young Rider Individual test on Saturday, and a score of 74.742% in the FEI Young Rider Freestyle on Sunday. Bacariza rode Romantico Ymas, a nine-year-old Hanoverian gelding by Bellissimo owned by Yeguada de Ymas, in the FEI Junior Rider division. The pair earned a score of 69.596% in the FEI Junior Rider Team test on Friday, a score of 70.882% in the FEI Junior Rider Individual test on Saturday, and a score of 76.458% in the FEI Junior Rider Freestyle on Sunday. Bacariza won the overall champion title at FIYDC for the second year in a row, after winning all six of the classes that she competed in with her two different mounts. “They are completely different,” said Bacariza of her two horses. “Dhannie is more with you and he loves being the center of attention. When he goes in the ring he’s like ‘I’m a star’. “I’m not as confident with Romantico yet because this is my first year competing him, and he hasn’t done CDI before,” continued Bacariza. “It’s a learning process together, but I’m super happy with how it’s going. I’m so happy with the way it turned out. To have the highest overall mark, I was also very, very happy.” Natalie Pai (USA), a 21-year- old from Wellington, FL, and Unlimited won the Under 25 division, presented by Diamante Farms. The pair earned a score of 68.590% in the FEI Grand Prix on Friday morning and a 71.208% in the FEI Grand Prix Freestyle on Sunday. The ninth week of the AGDF featured Para-Equestrian CPEDI 3* competition presented by Mission Control, Adequan®, Nutrena, and Fair Sky Farm. In the final day of competition, riders performed their Freestyle tests for the judges.

Kate Shoemaker (USA) and Solitaer 40 rode to their third win of the week in the FEI Para Freestyle Grade IV - CPEDI 3* with a score of 75.208%. Grade IV is for riders who are impaired in one or two limbs or have some visual impairment.

“I think today our highlight was in our shoulder-in. Maybe not because they were the best part of our test, but because they were the most improved and he was really, really solid in them today: staying on the line, keeping the bend, and staying uphill,” said Shoemaker of her 12-year-old Hanoverian gelding by Sandro Hit. “I was really happy that both days he’s actually been able to score eights in the shoulder-in, which is actually something we’ve been working so hard on this last year.”

Shoemaker’s freestyle test was actually a bit of a challenge

at first for her. “That choreography was actually about 18 months in the making. However, when I was first working on it, we couldn’t do it. It was way too challenging for both Soli and I,” commented Shoemaker. “We kept at it and then last summer before our U.S. Team Invitational Event before WEG, we rode this choreography for the first time and it came out really well,” concluded Shoemaker.

In the FEI Para Freestyle Grade III - CPEDI 3*, Rebecca Hart (USA) and Fortune 500 won with a score of 73.000%. Grade III is for riders who have severe impairments in both lower limbs with minimal or no impairment of the trunk or moderate impairments of the upper and lower limbs and trunk. Some riders in Grade III may use a wheelchair.

“I loved that I was able to get the walk the way that I wanted it with him,” said Hart of the nine-year-old Oldenburg gelding owned by Rowan O’Riley. “His trot work is always elastic and fluid, and I just wanted to feel the walk a little more in there and get it a little more consistent and clear.

“We were able to do that, so that was super. It was a nice feeling. I just wanted to be able to give him the trip that he deserved,” continued Hart. “His best quality is probably how hard he tries. Once he figures out what you want, he’s a very honest horse.”

AGDF 9 Highlights - Friday through Sunday

The ninth week of AGDF started on Friday, March 8, with a win for Roxanne Trunnell (USA) and Dolton, a seven-year-old Hanoverian gelding by Danone I owned by Karin Flint, in the FEI Para Team Test Grade I – CPEDI 3* with a score of 75.060%. “I’ve had him [Unlimited] for two years now, and this is my third year doing the U25 youth championships. We’ve come such a long way,” said Pai of her partnership with the 18-year-old KWPN gelding by Jazz x Clairudith owned by Melanie Pai. “It’s always a fun thing to come here and do the championships, and to be able to win is awesome. This was a long week and for him to come out there every single day and just give me everything, that’s amazing. Especially on the very last day when it was really hot, that was great. I’m really proud of him.”

Justine Boyer (USA), a 12-year-old from Wellington, FL, and Lentisco XVIII were the winners in the FEI Children division presented by Alessandro Albanese. The pair rode to a score of 63.538% on Saturday in the FEI Children Team test and a score of 61.071% in the FEI Children Individual test on Sunday.

“We both enjoy showing. He’s very sweet and very strong,” said Boyer of the 18-year-old P.R.E stallion owned by Hampton Green Farm. “My strongest test

was today because it was better than yesterday, and we got more forward. Long term I hope to work up to the juniors.”

Scarlett Hansen (CAN), a 14-year-old from Quebec, Canada, and Reve De Glatigny were the division winners in the FEI Pony Division. The pair earned scores of 66.571% in the FEI Pony Rider Team test, 67.207% in the FEI Pony Rider Individual test, and 68.792% in the FEI Pony Rider Freestyle.

“My relationship with my pony is really strong. We love to play together, and he loves treats because he is a pony,” said Hansen of her 14-year-old German Riding Pony by Viersen K. “My pony was born at home, and I trained him myself, so I’m really proud of him. I think we did really good, and I’m really happy.”

This is the fourth consecutive year that Just World International has teamed up with Dressage4Kids to participate in FIYDC. This year the top three in the divisions will decide together where to donate their prize money.

Introducing the Gauntlet - February v5b.indd 1 1/30/2019 11:40:24 AM

Can you tell us about yourself and what you compete in with your pony?

I’m competing in the FEI pony division with my 12-year-old German Riding Pony, Cinderella, who I’ve had for 3 years now.

How long have you been coming to AGDF for and what do you get out of your experience here?

This is my first year at AGDF, and Week 8 was my second CDI week. I want to build a partnership with my pony that we can keep

when we go into the show ring, and I want to meet more junior riders like myself.

Who do you look up to the most in the dressage world?

Kasey Perry-Glass is my inspiration as a rider and as a person. I love how she rides, and she’s just such a nice, genuine person to everyone she meets. I started following her story after the 2018 WEG, and really enjoyed her ride in the Week 8 freestyle. Competing and being here [at AGDF] all the time and seeing how she interacts strengthened my view of her.

What does the rest of the season look like for you?

I have one more competition, and I’m just really going to work on building a better relationship with my pony and improving our scores by improving our partnership.

Can you tell us about your pony freestyle with Cinderella?

With a pony, it’s hard to make a freestyle that’s both powerful and light. I love Disney, and every time Ella hears the music she perks up. I worked with Anne Miller of Manestream Musicals to create the choreography and put together the music. I love the final centerline because Ella’s trot lengthening is a highlight, she knows that it’s the final moment to give it her all. The music gets so powerful, and it’s fun for both of us.

Where can we find you when you’re not riding and competing?

Sleeping, haha. I like to cook, and I’m also a calligraphy artist.

Christoph Koschel (GER) started off Friday evening at AGDF 8 by defending his title and for the third time winning the Palm Beach Derby presented by Havensafe Farm, picking up an $3,000 check as his portion of the $8,000 prize money on offer. Koschel rode Action Ace, a 14-year-old Danish Warmblood gelding by Ijsselmeer owned by Janice Murdoch, and the new pair earned a score of 72.316% in the final round of the Derby.

“It’s great to win the third time in a row,” said Koschel of his success. “It’s really challenging. I think that is what we all enjoy as professional riders, to get a horse that we don’t know and find in four to five minutes the right buttons. To get to know the horse a little bit and then try to ride a test.”

Karen Lipp (USA) also rode Action Ace in the final round and took second place with a score of 68.713%. Adrienne Lyle (USA) and Karen Pavicic (CRO) tied for third place after being “knocked out” by Koschel and Lipp in the initial round of competition. Lyle and Flash Dancer IM 1175, a 16-year-old Hanoverian gelding by Londonderry

owned by Patricia Koschel, earned a score of 67.999%. Pavicic and Leuchtfeuer DE, a 14-year-old Swedish Warmblood stallion by Dion Romantica owned by Dressage Grand Ducal, earned a score of 67.705%.

Juliano shared, “This class has been a historical aspect of the [Palm Beach Dressage Derby] for many years, and it is fantastic that we keep it going. I was really thrilled to be a part of it. You [the riders] put yourself out there to learn how to ride these different horses in a very fast period of time, and you all did a really fantastic job. It’s really a credit to you as professionals. It was wonderful.”

Director of Dressage at AGDF, Thomas Baur said, “It’s the Palm Beach Derby Week, and when I came here first there was no derby in the derby, and I said, ‘We need to change that.’ Then I remembered about the Munich Derby and how they did it there, and so I copied the format to bring it here.”
