PUB NIGHT
Age Care Harmony Court Estate MAY 2017
Recreation News
The month of May is here and we are celebrating Mothers and much more!
We started our gardening early this year during the last week of April, but we won’t
stop there. We still have the Friendship Garden across for the Garden Room and some
extra pots to add to the Magnolia Courtyard. Please let the Recreation Department
know if you’d like to join us in the garden or volunteer to help us with weekly care.
We will be hosting a New Resident Tea with Colleen Durdon May 5th
. Come on
down to welcome the new faces at Harmony Court.
All are invited to attend our Mother’s Day Tea with John Parsons May 12th
to give
recognition to all the mothers and grandmothers able to make it. We will be serving
up delicious desserts and fruit with tea and coffee while we enjoy some live
entertainment.
For Mother’s Day, May 14th
, the kitchen will be serving a pancake brunch with
strawberry campote and bacon. As always, you are welcome to invite family or
friends to dine with you. Please just let reception know ahead of time.
As always we will celebrate our birthdays for the month on the 3rd
Friday, May 19th
.
Old Friends, a favorite group of many will be in to perform. Bring your dancing
shoes.
Our Pub Night and Cocktail hour was a big hit in April. Let’s get you all back for our
Pub Night on May 9th
with Steve Hillis, and cross your fingers to win the 50/50
jackpot at the end. We almost ran out of spots and beer for the last cocktail hour.
Make sure you get a spot for a drink on us May 26th
. There is always chips and good
company to go with it.
We just received news that our new bus is arriving Friday, May 12th at 10AM. Come
on out to the front parking lot to welcome our new bus and celebrate. Before the new
bus arrives we have two final trips with “old wheels.” The first, to visit a Burnaby
Local’s topiary garden with lunch at Yan’s Garden Chinese May 8th
. The second, a
shopping outing to Lougheed Mall May 11th
. The new bus will be going on its first
trip May 15th
to Queen Elizabeth Park to tour the Bloedel Garden. Be one of the first
to ride it! The second trip will be to Value Village for a shopping outing and lunch at
Tim Hortons. Every Tuesday Value Village offers a 30% discount for seniors. The
last trip of the month, May 29th
, we will visit Rocky Point Park to eat some fish and
chips at the famous Pajo’s. We will have our fingers crossed for warm weather as we
will be eating under cover outside.
Wishing you all the best,
Jessica Lemire

CHAPLAIN'S CORNER
The center of the universe is my conclusion after all these years. Who am I talking about? Mothers of
course. This month we celebrate mothers and celebrate we surely should. My own dear mother has
been in heaven 6 years come this July. How I miss her strong love and beautiful spirit. The reason I
say mothers are the center of the universe is because God made them the center of the family – His
Holy design.
As chaplain for the past 28 years, I’ve been introduced to many beautiful mothers. They all seem to
have the same quality characteristics: strong drive, unstoppable tenacity to serve their families, and
they can bounce back from almost every conceivable hardship or difficulty with a smile. I recently
conducted a memorial service for a dear man and there were multiple 3rd
generation mothers tending
to 4th
generation children in the service (great grandchildren). The mothers were sharp and keen and
truly beautiful.
“Thank you Lord for mothers
How could we ever say,
Just how much they mean to us
Day after day after day.”
Bless them all now, and long after they leave this world. Amen.
Have a good May.
Your Chaplain, Dan

Screened Out In our modern world, more and more things are being digitized, and more and more people are spending time in front of screens: televisions, cell phones, computers, tablets, even cars and refrigerators are now being made with interactive screens. Some consider these computerized screens to be harmful enough to declare the first week in May Digital Detox Week, a week spent free of the influence of these screens in our lives. Is “screen time” truly harmful? Some scientists have found screen time to have greater negative influences on kids. One study showed that kids separated from their screens for a week did a better job of reading emotions on other people’s faces than those who spent their days watching TV or playing computer games. This shows that too much screen time perhaps reduces childrens’ abilities to empathize with each other. Kids are not the only ones under the influence of screens. Adults who are on their computers or cell phones before they fall asleep have been shown to suffer through the night. The light from the screen disrupts the brain’s sleep-wake cycle, causing insomnia-like symptoms and sleep deprivation. We must accept that computers and media such as television and games are a fact of modern living. But how do we strike a healthy balance with these digital devices? One researcher advises that if the sun is shining, then screen time should be limited. There is no digital substitute for a walk outdoors or a visit to the playground. Another suggestion is to strike a balance between the more passive, consumptive nature of sitting in front of screens with active creativity. For every minute spent in front of the TV or a computer game, balance that with cooking, knitting, building a fort, doing a puzzle, or creating an art project. In our digital world, where our every whim seems catered to, it is important to stay engaged and curious with the world beyond our electronic screens.
Gemini
May 21st
– June 20th
They are quick to grasp the
meaning of a situation and act on it,
often with positive effects. They tend
to have a duality to their nature, and
can sometimes be tough to predict
how they will react.
They can turn from hot to cold and
may be prone to noticeable mood
swings. However, they are generous
signs with tendencies of being affectionate, and imaginative.
Taurus
April 20th
- May 20th
Stubborn by nature, the Taurus will
stand his/her ground to the bitter
end (sometimes even irrationally so).
But that's okay because the Taurus
is also a loving, sympathetic and
appreciative sign. The Taurus is very
understanding and when we need
someone to unburden ourselves to;
we often share our deepest fears
with the Taurians of the zodiac.
Taurians are very patient, practical
and efficient; they are excellent in
matters of business and are also
wonderful instructors/teachers.

Hearing loss is the number one disability in the world, affecting 500 million people both young and old. Hearing decreases as we age, and more people living longer means more people suffer from hearing loss. However, the main culprit of hearing loss is too much noise. This May 31, Save Your Hearing Day, follow these tips to give your ears a rest. In many cases, our ears’ worst enemies are everyday appliances that make our lives easier: hair dryers, lawn mowers, and portable music players. Work-related noise is also a culprit. So how do we fight hearing loss? Search out peace and quiet for one. And don’t be afraid to protect your ears with earplugs or other types of ear protection. Other methods to save hearing may surprise you. Some doctors stress a diet rich in nutrients that slow the aging process. Exercise is just as important. It stimulates circulation, which is greatly beneficial to a healthy auditory system. This is advice worth listening to.

12 PRINCIPLES OF MOTHERHOOD
1. If motherhood were going to be easy, it never would have started with something called
labor!
2. Shouting to make your children obey is like using the horn to steer your car. And you
get about the same results.
3. The smartest advice on raising children is to enjoy them while they are still on your
side.
4. Avenge yourself—live long enough to be a problem to your children.
5. The best way to keep kids at home is to make the home a pleasant atmosphere—and to
let the air out of the tires.
6. Life's golden age is when the kids are too old to need babysitters and too young to
borrow the family car.
7. You will save yourself a lot of grief if you think of a curfew as just a general time to
shoot for.
8. There are three ways to get something done: do it yourself, hire someone to do it, or
forbid your children to do it.
9. Cleaning your house while your kids are at home is like trying to shovel the driveway
during a snowstorm.
10. The hardest people to convince they're at the retirement age are children at bedtime.
11. There are only two things a child will share willingly: communicable diseases and his
mother's age.
12. The only people in this world who are always sure about the proper way to raise
children are those who never had any.
