Age Health and Prostate Cancer Treatment
Prostate cancer is a serious disease but most men diagnosed with prostate cancer do not die from it
In fact more than 25 million men in the United States who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer at
some point are still alive today
Whether to aggressively treat prostate cancer or monitor it carefully through active surveillance
(watchful waiting) is a complicated decision One thing that needs to be considered is life
expectancy Studies have shown that in many cases when men live for less than 10 years after their
prostate cancer diagnosis its because they have died of something else That means they would have
been unlikely to benefit from prostate cancer treatment And they would have suffered needlessly from
any unpleasant side effects of treatment
Of course people dont know in advance how long theyre going to live So researchers conducted a
study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology to help doctors and patients figure out when it
makes sense to aggressively treat prostate cancer They studied almost 20000 men 66 years of age
and older who had prostate cancer that had not spread These men received no surgery or radiation
for at least 6 months after diagnosis The researchers concluded that few men with cancer that is found
only in the prostate when they are more than 65 years old will actually die of prostate cancer within 10
years
Men who also had other health problems such as heart disease diabetes or other cancers were more
likely to die of something other than prostate cancer This study and others like it suggest that older
men may reasonably decide to hold off on active treatment and instead to monitor their prostate cancer
with active surveillance This usually means getting regular PSA tests rectal exams ultrasounds

users to set quit dates track financial goals schedule reminders and more

Want to quit smoking Theres an app for that
Help to quit smoking may be as close as your cell phone A systematic review of scientific studies has
found that supportive messages delivered over mobile phones almost doubled the success rates of
smokers trying to quit
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) has been texting smokers with round-the-clock encouragement and
advice for the past 2 years to help them stop smoking Now its rolled out a smartphone app that allows
users to set quit dates track financial goals schedule reminders and more
The NCI quit-smoking programs and app are free of charge and are based on research and scientific
testing Visit smokefreegov to download the app or search ldquoQuitPalrdquo in the iTunes App Store It is
available for iPhone iPod Touch and iPad Sign up for quit-smoking texts by texting ldquoQUITrdquo to iQUIT
(47848) and selecting a date to stop smoking
About half of all people who smoke and continue to smoke will end up dying from a tobacco-related
disease Tobacco use causes more than a dozen types of cancer as well as heart disease
emphysema and stroke In the US tobacco use is responsible for nearly 1 in 5 deaths

Get More Exercise Walking Your Dog
Dog owners know that daily walks are important for canine health but its also a great way to make
exercise a part of your own daily routine If you dont already regularly walk your dog now is a great
time to start Once youre in the habit you can find ways to get even more benefit out of your daily
walks
Not all dogs are well-suited to jogging long distances but picking up the pace for short periods can help
you both ease in to getting more exercise Varying your route taking advantage of up- and downhill
areas and seeking out nearby parks or unpaved trails will help you increase your activity level while
keeping it interesting If your dog needs to make frequent stops that doesnt mean you need to ndash try
jogging or marching in place while you wait or use that time for stretching lunges or squats
Ready to go beyond the basic walk Join a local club and try training for obedience tracking agility or
rally Whether your goal is to compete or just teach your dog a few new tricks spending more time
outdoors with your dog will help ensure you both get the exercise you need to stay healthy and have
fun in the process Did you know you and your dog can participate together in an American Cancer
Society fundraiser to honor canine caregivers and companions Find out whether a Bark For Lifereg
