RYE | Construction onthe town’s new safetybuilding continues to go asscheduled.

Police Chief Alan Gouldsaid in recent talks with theconstruction company,Horne Construction, thatthey have indicated that itwill be completed for theexpected December date.He said that roof andplumbing work are expect-ed to begin sometime thisweek.

“We’re feeling prettygood about seeing it cometogether,” said Gould.

Once complete, the22,900 sq.ft. building willhouse police, fire and emer-gency medical services.

Gould said the newbuilding grants some muchneeded space and amenitiesthat will greatly aid hisdepartment.

One such amenity willbe the addition of two jailcells to the department.Currently police handcuffperpetrators to a steelbench that is anchored tothe floor. That situation cre-ates a need to quickly expe-dite prisoners and movethem on to RockinghamCounty Correctional Facili-ty.

“They (the jail cells) will

make it safer and a lot moreconvenient for us,” saidGould.

Another addition — onethe chief has named his per-sonal favorite — is the extrastorage space that will beavailable at the new facility. The current police station, located on Central Road, has no closets and limitedstorage space.

“We’ve got stuff tuckedaway all over the place,”said Gould.

Snow tires for the policecruisers are currently storedin the building’s attic with apull-down staircase wherethey have to be stored andretrieved twice a year.

Gender-specific lockerrooms will also be an addi-tion to the new building.

Work progresses on town safety building

Gould said the newfacility will be more cost-effective for the town whileproviding a single locationfor residents to access theservices provided by alldepartments. In sharing abuilding with the firedepartment the police alsohave the advantage of hav-ing someone in the building

24 hours a day. Althoughthe police department is afull-time service, eveningofficers are more often onthe road and less at the sta-tion.

Both the police and firedepartments will also haveequal access to the townsemergency operations cen-ter, which currently residesin the old fire station.

“Right now if there werea natural disaster or ifsomething happened atSeabrook (nuclear powerplant) either I or my repre-sentative would have to goto the fire department, away from our headquar-ters.”

Gould said residentsshould watch for the demo-lition of the old fire depart-ment, which will indicatethat the police are movingin to the new building. Thespace will be used for park-ing for the public.
