One gets the sense of an earlier, simpler time when men were men and … you get the picture. It is immediately obvi- ous to the casual observer that store owner Nancy Kingston has a thing for antiques. Vintage items adorn what little free space isn’t taken up by a variety of specialty products. An old scale hangs behind the deli counter, former post office mail slots now serve as a wine rack and an ancient cask simply labeled “rum” hangs above the store’s cooler. Along with the host of unique items in the store there are also several hard- to-find items for purchase. At the deli counter one can find a wide variety of Boar’s Head products. It is also here that one can pur- chase a fresh sandwich sure to put a dent in that midday appetite. Kinney wich,” said Store Manager Laurie Wilson. The store also offers deli- cious Danvers Butchery marinated meats for great grilling, dairy from Hatch- land Farm (see: milk in a glass bottle. Remember that?), soft drinks from nearby Squamscott Bever- age and Green Mountain Coffee for those in need of that early morning caffeine injection. Oh, and if you fish, they’ve got worms for bait. “Life is Good” T-shirts and hats are also available. Kingston first purchased the store in 2001 and, after a failed attempt to lease the business, she is at it herself with the help of a few friends. She also is the owner of Nancy Kingston Realty, LLC. Their beginning was not an easy one, according to Wilson. Construction work on the Route 85 bridge that crosses the B&M Railroad during the first year under new management created Step back in time at Newfields General Store several challenges. The detour around the bridge did a lot to cut down on passers by. Wilson said the store’s staff did everything in its power to get cus- tomers coming in. “We had grilled meats outside, we had wine tast- ings, we even had a Patriots cheerleader signing calen- dars,” she said. Now that construction is complete, the business appears to be catching on with the locals. The store sees visits from 200-250 per day according to Wilson. “Every day the store gets busier and busier,” she said. The store also offers a few items that customers can walk away with for only a dollar. Ice for those summer cocktails, a Boar’s Head hot dog or a Slushie from and old-fashioned Slush Puppies machine can all be had for only a buck. “We try to price things reasonably,” said Kingston. Newfields General Store is conveniently located in downtown Newfields at 66 Main Street. The store is open Monday through Thursday 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and can be reached at (603) 773- 5656. HOT WHEELS — Seabrook Library held its second annual outdoor remote control car race for young adults on Saturday, August 5. Twenty -six people showed up for a program enti- tled “Hot Dogs & Hot Rods,” while 15 racers competed for first, second and third place trophies. First place was clinched by Jake Philbrick, while Steven Chase and Ryan Cameron placed second and third by a narrow margin. Raffle prizes included an XMODS Custom RC starter kit donated by Radio Shack of Seabrook, a Kasey Kahne Action NASCAR figure, a Martin Truex Jr. action figure and a Tony Stewart diecast car donated by Rick Gagnon and Dillon Dube. — Atlantic News Courtesy Photo
