SOUTH HAMPTON |Think a computer program-mer spends all day hunchedat a desk staring at a moni-tor? Think again.

Karen Reed, a formercomputer programmer, hasalways enjoyed gardeningand the outdoors as ahobby. But these days, gar-dening is her life. Last year,Reed opened the Aspen HillHerb Farm, located at 96Chase Road in South Hamp-ton.

The farm boasts morethan 50 varieties of organicpotted herbs, for both culi-nary and medicinal uses.

Reed says her interest inherbs began a few years agoafter she attended a lecture,sponsored by Tom’s ofMaine, that focused onherbal gardening.

“After the lecture, I saidto myself, ‘Oh my god,

that’s what I want to do,’”she says.

But herbal gardeningwas not as easy as it looked.After her husband con-structed a greenhouse in thefamily’s yard, Reed had tolearn how to manage theplants year-round in a con-trolled environment. Shesays she took the advice ofother local gardeners andeven consulted a soil spe-

cialist to get her greenhouseup and running.

“The first two years werea struggle and the plantsdidn’t grow,” she says. “Iwas used to growing themin the ground. But I finallylearned the process. It justtook a couple of years to getthe hang of it.”

But greenhouse garden-ing wasn’t the only skillReed needed to become an

herbal expert. Reed says sheenrolled in a seven monthcourse on medicinal herbs atthe Misty Meadows HerbalCenter in Lee.

Equipped with theknowledge she acquired atMisty Meadows, Reed saysshe began to make her ownline of herbal soaps, creamsand salves.

Finally familiar with theprocess of growing andusing culinary and medici-nal herbs, Reed opened herfarm last year and startedattending local farmer’smarkets three times eachweek.

The herbal expert saysthat common culinaryherbs, such as basil, rose-mary and cilantro were themost popular at Aspen Hilllast year because “peoplearen’t yet familiar with themedicinal uses of herbs.”

Reed is excited for thefarm’s second season inbusiness. In addition toherbs, she has even addedpotted perennials to herselection this year.

“My favorite part isgrowing the plants; I lovethem,” she says “It’s alsoexciting to meet people whoare just as excited about theplants as I am.”

They are createdby painting on a smooth Plexiglass plate,often with numerous additional layers paint-ed on the plate and added to the print. Theeffect is a vibrant and unique piece whichcannot be duplicated in any other way.

A resident of Kingston since 1979, Dan-nielle has studied with many noted artists,including printmaker Jack Carlton and BrianChu. Her work has been published in “Par-nassus,” the Inter-Arts magazine of NorthernEssex Community College and on the coverof the November issue “New HampshireLiving” magazine. Her award-winning workhas been seen in numerous shows in the Sea-coast area.

Dannielle believes that an artist must tryto find new ways to express their vision ofthe world around them.
