Think again. Karen Reed, a former computer programmer, has always enjoyed gardening and the outdoors as a hobby. But these days, gar- dening is her life. Last year, Reed opened the Aspen Hill Herb Farm, located at 96 Chase Road in South Hamp- ton. The farm boasts more than 50 varieties of organic potted herbs, for both culi- nary and medicinal uses. Reed says her interest in herbs began a few years ago after she attended a lecture, sponsored by Tom’s of Maine, that focused on herbal gardening. “After the lecture, I said to myself, ‘Oh my god, Aspen Hill Herb Farm is a growing business that’s what I want to do,’” she says. But herbal gardening was not as easy as it looked. After her husband con- structed a greenhouse in the family’s yard, Reed had to learn how to manage the plants year-round in a con- trolled environment. She says she took the advice of other local gardeners and even consulted a soil spe- cialist to get her greenhouse up and running. “The first two years were a struggle and the plants didn’t grow,” she says. “I was used to growing them in the ground. But I finally learned the process. It just took a couple of years to get the hang of it.” But greenhouse garden- ing wasn’t the only skill Reed needed to become an herbal expert. Reed says she enrolled in a seven month course on medicinal herbs at the Misty Meadows Herbal Center in Lee. Equipped with the knowledge she acquired at Misty Meadows, Reed says she began to make her own line of herbal soaps, creams and salves. Finally familiar with the process of growing and using culinary and medici- nal herbs, Reed opened her farm last year and started attending local farmer’s markets three times each week. The herbal expert says that common culinary herbs, such as basil, rose- mary and cilantro were the most popular at Aspen Hill last year because “people aren’t yet familiar with the medicinal uses of herbs.” Reed is excited for the farm’s second season in business. In addition to herbs, she has even added potted perennials to her selection this year. “My favorite part is growing the plants; I love them,” she says “It’s also exciting to meet people who are just as excited about the plants as I am.” The Aspen Hill Herb Farm is open on Fridays and Saturdays May through August from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information call (603) 770-1986.
