Hotel Logistics:The Grand Summit Resort check-in time is guaranteed by 6pm on the day of the arrival. Check out time is before 10:30 am on the day of the departure. THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 6TH

Judiann Ferretti Smith is the Executive Director of the Daniel Hanley Center for Health Leadership, a niche non-profit organization focused on developing the leadership skills of health professionals in Maine and beyond. The Hanley Center hit its 1000-alumni milestone in 2019 furthering its impact in collaboratively improving the health of all communities. Judiann joined the Hanley Center in April of 2015 after playing a variety of roles at Spurwink, Maine’s largest non-profit mental health agency, over a period of 18 years. At Spurwink, Judiann served in 3 progressively more responsible positions starting as the Director of Human Resources, then the Director of Regulatory & Legislative Analysis to her final Spurwink role as Vice President of Strategy & Government Relations. Judiann spent her time working with State & legislative leaders, other providers and the business community shaping policies and agendas and convening and facilitating work groups to best serve children, families & adults challenged by behavioral health diagnoses and developmental disabilities. She also led a variety of mission impact & marketing related efforts within Spurwink.

Judiann is very interested in how skilled leaders can and will play an important role in shaping health policy that strives to meet the Triple Aim while continuing to serve underserved populations challenged by geography, age (elders and children), race or ethnicity. Before Spurwink, Judiann held a variety of insurance related roles, briefly practiced law in Boston, worked for Maine's former Secretary of State and the City of Saco. Judiann has served on a variety of non-profit and chamber boards and committees including a 2- term run as an elected School Committee member in Yarmouth, Maine. Judiann received her Bachelor of Science in Psychology at St. Bonaventure University and her Juris Doctor at Suffolk University Law School. Judiann is also a proud graduate of the Daniel Hanley Center's Health Leadership Development program (Class III). No significant or relevant financial relationships to disclose.

Judiann Ferretti Smith JD

Sarah Porter grew up in Presque Isle, Maine and attended the University of Maine at Orono where she received her B.A. in Psychology in 2013. After suffering a stroke at age 20, she became very interested in health policy. She went on to obtain her Masters of Public Health degree in health policy and management from Columbia University in 2015. Her graduate thesis involved lobbying and working for the policy division of the National Rural Health Association in Washington, D.C. Her first post-graduate position was as the Project Director for the Healthy Maine Partnerships grant through the University of New England, where she also taught undergraduate courses in the Health, Wellness and Occupational Studies department. In 2017, she came to work for Maine Medical Partners -- Neurosurgery and Spine as a quality improvement specialist, focusing on population health initiatives. She spearheaded the implementation of depression and anxiety screening in the practice, and she is currently in the process of changing the practices’ opioid guidelines to reduce post-operative opioid prescriptions. Her position at Maine Medical Partners allowed her to develop a passion for combining public health methods with clinical practice. In May 2020, she will be attending the University of New England’s Physician Assistant program to start her next adventure in patient care. Sarah Porter, MPH

Wendy Johnston, PA-C is currently employed as a lead physician assistant with Maine Medical Partners – Neurosurgery and Spine Associates. She has over 25 years of experience delivering direct patient care to diverse patient populations. This experience includes: wound care, preoperative neurosurgery evaluations, performing non-invasive procedures and assisting physicians during surgeries and complicated procedures. She is a strong leader in her field and has participated in many quality and improvement initiatives to enhance patient care. No significant or relevant financial relationships to disclose.

Wendy Johnston, PA-C

Christopher Bates-Withers is a physician assistant in the cardiothoracic intensive care unit at Maine Medical Center, where he also serves on the cardiac surgery quality improvement committee and the ECMO steering committee. He grew up in the mountains of Colorado before moving to New England for College. During college and graduate school, he worked as a firefighter, paramedic and ACLS instructor. He completed a master’s degree at Harvard University where he conducted basic science research in cardiovascular physiology at Boston Children’s Hospital. He then attended physician assistant training at Midwestern University in Glendale, Arizona. He worked for one year in private practice cardiology in Arizona, and two years with the advanced heart failure program at Boston Medical Center where he became chief PA before coming to his current position at Maine Medical Center.

He lives in Westbrook, Maine and teaches for the physician assistant programs at Boston University and University of New England, and is on the admissions committee for the Boston University PA program. He is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Clinical Toxicology at the University of Florida College of Pharmacy. His clinical interests include critical care, cardiovascular disease, cardiac imaging, mechanical circulatory support, and clinical toxicology. In his spare time, he is an avid runner and has completed 4 marathons and over 30 half marathons. No significant or relevant financial relationships to disclose.

Elizabeth Balsam Hart, MD is a family physician with additional board certifications in Hospice and Palliative Medicine and Geriatrics. She is a certified Hospice Medical Director (HMDC.) An honors graduate of Harvard-Radcliffe Colleges and Dartmouth Medical School, she completed her family medicine residency and her geriatric fellowship at Maine-Dartmouth Family Medicine Residency in Augusta. She is a graduate of the Practice Change Fellowship (PCF) a national program supported by the Hartford Foundation and Atlantic Philanthropies to advance excellence in geriatric leadership. She enjoyed her two-year local PCF project ”Cultivating Meaningful Conversations to Guide Care,” which focused on launching the POLST (Physician Orders for Life Sustaining Treatment) program in Maine. She has been a facilitator and project scholar for the Maine Humanities Council's Literature and Medicine program, has taught medical humanities and has a background in medical ethics. She enjoys collaborating with staff across all programs as Director of Medical Services at Androscoggin Home Healthcare + Hospice. No significant or relevant financial relationships to disclose.

Elizabeth Balsam Hart, MD

Jim Vankirk has worked in Hospice and Palliative Medicine throughout his 30-year career. He is the medical director of the Supportive Care program at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor and the Northern Light Health Palliative Care service line. He is committed to improving access to Palliative care services for the people of Maine through innovation and education. No significant or relevant financial relationships to disclose.

Jim VanKirk, MD

Beth is a Physician Assistant at Northern Light Health and Medical Director of Primary Care at Inland Hospital. She graduated from Hahnemann University Physician Assistant Program in 1983 and received her master’s Degree in Bioethics and Health Policy in 2007 from Loyola University, Chicago. She is Nationally Certified in Healthcare Ethics Consultant and Chair of the Ethics Committee at Inland Hospital and the Northern Light Central Maine Regional Group Ethics Committee. Although she has practices in several specialties throughout the years, her first love is Family Practice and she continues to see patients in the Family Practice setting. Dina McKelvy, BA, MA, MLS is currently employed as the Director for Library and Knowledge Services at Maine Medical Center. She also serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Maine Medical Center. Her major research interests include healthcare informatics, information literacy and medical humanities. Dina has served in many leadership roles over the years, and she currently holds the position of Chapter Council of the Medical Library Association. Stephanie Podolski, MPH, MSPA, PA-C is currently employed as a Hospitalist PA at Maine General Medical Center and serves as the PA at Large for the Medical Executive Committee. She completed two graduate degrees from UNE, including a Master of Science in Physician Assistant studies and a Master of Public Health. Stephanie has been serving on the Maine Association of Physician Assistant Board of Directors in various roles since 2013. In addition, she is an adjunct faculty member at the University of New England (UNE) PA program, as well as a preceptor for PA students. Dora Anne Mills is a public health physician and pediatrician from Farmington and Portland. She currently serves as the Chief Health Improvement Officer for MaineHealth, Maine's largest health system. Formerly, she served as Maine's public health officer under Governors King and Baldacci, as vice president for clinical affairs at the University of New England, and as a practicing physician in her hometown of Farmington. Dora enjoys the Maine outdoors, from jogging around Back Cove and lakes in western Maine, to skiing and hiking in the mountains, to kayaking along the coast. No significant or relevant financial relationships to disclose.

Richard Riker, MD, FCCM is currently employed as an attending physician in Critical Care Medicine at Maine Medical Center. Dr. Riker received his MD from the University of Vermont’s College of Medicine and completed his residency in Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Following his residency, he completed a Fellowship in Pulmonary Disease at Maine Medical Center. Throughout his career, Dr. Riker has gained experience in many fields including emergency medicine, internal medicine, critical care, pulmonary medicine and neurocritical care. In addition to his direct clinical work, Dr. Riker has a passion for research. He has contributed to many publications and has held many well-respected positions in the field of research, including as chair of the Maine Medical Center Institutional Review Board. Richard Riker, MD, FCCM

Patricia Osborne Shafer, RN, MN, is the senior director for health information and resources and the associate editor of epilepsy.com for the Epilepsy Foundation. She has worked for many years as an epilepsy clinical nurse specialist at the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts, She has been involved with epilepsy.com and the Epilepsy Therapy Project for many years.

Patty received her undergraduate education at the University of Vermont and a graduate degree in neuroscience nursing from the University of Washington in Seattle. She is a past member and past chair of the Epilepsy Foundation’s Professional Advisory Board, a past member of the Board of Directors of the Epilepsy Foundation, and a long-term member of the Professional Advisory Board of New England. She has served on the American Epilepsy Society Board of Directors and numerous committees and workgroups. She has also participated in the creation of the North American Declaration on Epilepsy, a public health agenda for epilepsy, and guidelines for first seizures and women with epilepsy. She has served as an affiliate member of the CDC-funded Managing Epilepsy Well Network and on numerous research review panels and advisory committees for regulatory reform, disability concerns, and public health concerns in epilepsy. Patty was a member for the Institute of Medicine’s Committee on the Public Health Dimensions of the Epilepsies. She brings a personal perspective, having lived with epilepsy for many years. Patricia Osborne Shafer, RN, MN

Dena Whitesell is originally from upstate New York and went to Union College, followed by Albany Medical College, in that area. She moved here in 2005 to start her Psychiatry Residency at Maine Medical Center and fell in love with Maine. After residency, she stayed at Maine Medical Center as an attending on the Consultation and Liaison Service. Her interests largely lie in teaching, and in addition to becoming the Director of the CL service, she is also the Clerkship Director for students in their third year. She is also the Co-Course Director for the Neuroscience course that is being developed for Maine track medical students in their second year, and recently became the Associate Program Director for the Psychiatry Residency, which is expanding and starting a Rural Track program, which will have residents doing part of their training in Rockland. Dena Whitesell, MD

Amanda Robinson is a family nurse practitioner who specializes in medical dermatology at Maine Medical Partners Dermatology. She completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the University of Jacksonville in Jacksonville, Florida and then earned her Master of Science degree at Simmons College in Boston, Massachusetts. She holds a national board certification with the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) as a family nurse practitioner. No significant or relevant financial relationships to disclose.

Steven Blessington is the current past President of the Maine Association of Physician Assistants (MEAPA). He has been a practicing physician assistant for 20 years and has more than 25 years of combined emergency care experience. He currently practices full-time in emergency medicine at Maine Medical Center in Portland. Steve is a graduate of Northeastern University’s Physician Assistant Program and prior to his PA training worked as a Paramedic and Firefighter. Steve is an adjunct faculty member of the UNE Physician Assistant Program, serves as a medical consultant to a national behavioral health company, and is a medical expert consultant to law firms throughout the country. Additional areas of practice include hyperbaric wound care and occupational medicine. Steve is active in legislative issues relating to the physician assistant scope of practice, serving as Chair of the MEAPA Governmental Affairs Committee. Steve, his wife and two children enjoy living in Maine. You can often find him and his family out boating on the beautiful coastal waters of Casco Bay. Jack Tuchman, PA-C is currently employed as a PA in Neurosurgery at Maine Medical Center. He completed his undergraduate degree at Marist College in NY and his Master of Health Science in Physician Assistant Studies from Marywood University in Pennsylvania. Jack has held roles in many fields including burn surgery/critical care, trauma, and ENT/oral maxillofacial surgery. In his current role in neurosurgery he is a first assistant in the OR, responsible for floor and ICU management of patients and creates treatment plans for patients on his service. Ms. Rose serves as the Faculty Development and Continuing Interprofessional Development Program Manager with the Department of Medical Education at Maine Medical Center. She received her B.S. from University of Massachusetts Lowell and her MPH from the University of New England. Ms. Rose’s general research and academic interests are in Population Health, Wellness in Teaching and Faculty Development in Medical Education. She conducted her capstone project in Occupational Health of Us Army Helicopter Pilots with the US Army Aeromedical Research Laboratory at Fort Rucker Alabama prior to starting her work with Maine Medical Center. Currently, Ms. Rose is a doctoral candidate in Education Leadership at the University of New England and lives in Portland with her husband, three children, one cat, one fish and six chickens. Sue Rose, MHP

Dr. Harmon received his Osteopathic medical degree from the University of New England College Osteopathic medicine in 2005, followed by completing a Family medicine residency in 2008 and Geriatric Fellowship in 2009, both at Maine-Dartmouth Family Medicine Residency in Augusta, Maine. He completed a hospice and Palliative medicine fellowship at Maine Medical Center in 2014. Dr. Harmon has worked as an emergency room physician, family medicine attending, nursing home director, hospitalist and most recently geriatric primary care provider and director of inpatient geriatrics at Maine General Medical Center. Meagan Moore, MD, PhD is currently employed as the Medical Director for the Interstitial Lung Disease Program through Chest Medicine Associates. Additionally, Dr. Moore is an attending physician for Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine through Maine Medical Center. Dr. Moore received her MD from the University of Connecticut Health Center and her PhD in Biomedical Sciences in the Immunology Division also from the University of Connecticut Health Center. Dr. Teresa May is an early career clinical investigator and physician in Maine Medical Center’s Department of Critical Care Services. She is a fellowship trained as a pulmonary, medical critical care, neurocritical care specialist with four years of clinical experience as an attending. She has successfully completed a KL2 career development grant awarded by the Tufts Clinical and Translational Science Institute in 2016, where she studied targeted temperature management in cardiac arrest survivors. Dr. Morris attended Oregon Health Sciences University School of Medicine in Portland, OR followed by completion of a combined Internal Medicine and Neurology Residency program at the University of Arizona in Tucson, AZ. She then moved back east to do a Vascular Neurology Fellowship at Boston Medical Center, affiliated with Boston University. She was an attending stroke specialist at UMass Medical Center in Worcester, MA for 4 years before moving to Maine and joining Maine Medical Partners Neurology as their first Neurohospitalist. She is currently board certified in Neurology, Internal Medicine, Vascular Neurology and Neuroimaging, continues to work as a Neurohospitalist, participates in the outpatient Stroke Clinic and is the Medical Director of the Stroke and TeleStroke programs at Maine Medical Center. Jane Morris, MD

Robert Ecker, MD is currently employed at Maine Medical Center as both the Director of Neuroscience and Endovascular/Cerebrovascular Neurosurgery and also as the Medical Director for the Neuroscience Service Line. Dr. Ecker received his undergraduate degree from Harvard University and his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia. From there he completed his internship and residency in neurologic surgery at Mayo Clinic and a fellowship in Endovascular Neurosurgery at the University of Buffalo. Following his fellowship, Dr. Ecker served as a Lieutenant Commander for the US Navy where he was the Assistant Dept. Head of Neurosurgery at the US Navy Hospital in Okinawa, Japan. He came to Maine Medical Center in 2010, and among his roles there he serves as a preceptor both for students from Tufts University and the University of Vermont as well for residents in vascular surgery. Robert Ecker, MD

Dana Villmore, PhD, PA-C finished her undergraduate studies in Biology at Florida Gulf Coast University and completed her Doctorate in Immunology and Microbiology at the University of Florida in 2012. While doing research at the University of Florida on inflammatory-mediated bone loss in Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, she became interested in pursuing a clinical career to treat these complicated diseases. She then attended MCHPS University in Boston and earned a Masters in Physician Assistant Studies in 2015. Dana practiced primary care in the greater Bangor region for over 3 years during which she precepted UNE PA program students for their family medicine rotations. It was during that time that she realized her passion for teaching and therefore decided to steer her career to academia and became a full time clinical professor for didactic year PA students at UNE starting in January 2019. She teaches their evidence based medicine, interprofessional geriatrics program, specialty disciplines, and principles of bioscience courses. Her current research interests include inflammation, autoimmunity, and fibromyalgia. She also does urgent care at the Intermed onsite clinic for Idexx located in Westbrook. Major Benjamin D. Ingram is a native of Portland Oregon. He currently lives in Columbia, Maryland with his wife of 16 years and 4 children. He joined the Army in 2001 as a Combat Medic and he mobilized as a combat medic in 2003 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Nobel Eagle. On 07JAN2011 Maj Ingram graduated from University of Nebraska Medical Center and the Inter-service Physician Program with his Master’s Degree in Physician Assistant studies. After graduating and passing the PANCE he attended the Army’s Tactical Combat Medical Course (TCMC) and volunteer for deployment to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and provided point of injury and Role 1 trauma care in support of 2-28 Infantry. In June 2012, after returning from Afghanistan CPT Ingram was stationed in Grafenwoehr Germany with the 4-319th Field Artillery, 173rd Airborne Brigade. He provided primary care services as well as taught and provided drop zone medical coverage. While in Germany he also volunteered with the Mpanda Mission Team to provide PTSD therapy training to military and police chaplains in Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda and the DRC using the “Combat Trauma Healing Manual” and its Kirundi translation “Bridges to Healing: Africa.” Currently Major Ingram is involved in Army Medical Recruiting and works in Force Health Protection and Community Medicine at Fort Meade, Maryland.
