The Southern State Community College Board of Trustees’ meeting was held in theBoard Room on the Central Campus of Southern State Community College onWednesday, November 29, 2006.

Call to Order and Roll Call

At 5:30 p.m., Trustee Ward called the meeting to order. Roll Call was as follows:

The Chairman noted a request from Julia Basham, Faculty Senate Chair, to address theBoard on behalf of the faculty. Ms. Ayres moved and Mr. Ward seconded that theAgenda with the requested item be approved. All were in favor.

A Big Thank You

IVlany, many thanks for a wonderful retirement part)r last week. It was a very specialevening for Gale, me and our family. I appreciated Paul’s kind words and the conferringof "Emeritus" status. Stevetta asked me exactly what that meant so I looked it up.Webster defines it as follows: "Retired but retaining the title held immediately beforeretirement". Now I need to develop a list of the privileges that go with the title (justkidding). I do truly appreciate all of the effort that went into the festivities. I can’tima~ne how it could have been any nicer with the possible exception of eliminating theduet that Gale and I sang.

Rory Ryan Appointed to Board

I recently received word from the Governor’s Office that Rory Ryan has now beenappointed to the Southern State Community College Board of Trustees. We’ve includeda copy of his resume with this report to familiarize the Board with our new member. Asthe Agenda will reflect, Mr. Ryan will be officially sworn in and be a part of theinterview and selection process for the presidency.

Enrollment Update

_/ks of this writing we are running ah~]ost 9% ahead of last winter quarter in headcountand a little over 7% ahead in FTE. We hak, e over two-thirds of expected enrollmentregistered but as Yogi said, "It ain’t over ’til it’s over." I do not expect to see those levelsof increase at the end of registration, but we should maintain the increases we haveexperienced during the sunvner and fall.

Corporate and Community Services

We recently received information from the Board of Regents regarding funding for non-credit job training, which is attached. The funding is based on the revenues generated inthe previous year. Southern State was the fourth highest provider in terms of revenue ofthe twenty-three community and technical colleges and fifth highest among the fif~y-twotwo year institutions. The net result was in increase in funding of more than $40,000 overthe original appropriation. Congratulations to John Joy and his fine staff!

P-16 Council

As a requirement of the P- t 6 Grant we received from the Knowledge Works Foundation,we hosted a con~munity meeting last Monday. We had implied a limited number ofindividuals representing the business con~m~ty and had about 40 in attendance.Enclosed is a one page handout that was distributed at the meeting. After some openingremarks and a Power Point presentation, seven of the original members of the Councilserx~ed as a panel to respond to questions from the audience. The discussion was lively,and I believe we now have several more individuals involved. On a longer-term basis, Ihope that we would have a similar council in each of our comities.

Another Chemistry Highlight

Enclosed is a newspaper story regarding a recent program that SSCC and Ohio Statesponsored. As the article indicates, we are involved in a collaborative project with OSU.It is ofimerest to note that OSU went to Dr. Storer for ideas for the REEL Project, andDon has been working closely ~4th them ever since. We will be included in a grant that isbeing written by Ohio State. We may not be ranked lmmber one in football, but we stillhave a few things we can show the big dog.

We received$12,500 from the schools, agencies, and businesses. The $20,000 was to be usedfor establishing what is known as a P-16 Council to plan methods for easingtransitions from one level of learning to the next. The Highland County P-16Council, composed of leaders from education, business and the community, hasidentified gaps in our local education systems-problem areas that hinder studentsfrom moving efg~ciently from early childhood to postsecondary education.Southern State Community College is the lead organization for convening meetingsfor the Highland County P-16 Council while the Clinton, Fayette, HighlandEducational Service Region is the fiscal agent.

Created by SSCC chemistrynrofessor Dr. Donald Storer, thescenario was devised for theResearch Experiences to EnhanceLemming (REEL) program.Sponsored by the ,N#donal ScienceFoundation, the R_EEL progam isdesigned to introduce a more real-istic laboratory experience to Arstadd second year chemismy studentsin 15 cornmuniD~ :oLleges, tiberalarts colleges and universities thatcomprise the Ohio Consortium forUnde%o-raduate Research (OCUR).

In the scenario, the studentswere provided with pigment sam-ples taken from various "suspects’"residences. Using their chemicalanalysis of the pigments and infor-mation about the tLme periods inwhich certain pigments were used.me students ~temnted to determinethe thief of the ar~vork: "The Girlwith the Pearl Ea~ng(" painted byVermeer in 1665. The college and the Board of Trustees have collaboratively narrowed the field to two fine,qualified presidential candidates. Throughout both major stages of this process including interviews andbackground research, the faculty, staff and administration of the college have remained strongly united infavor of one outstanding candidate.

The Faculty, of Southern State Community College has 1,a~own this candidate throughout thecollege’s existence. She has continually improved herself and has consistently devoted her efforts toimproving this college and this community. She is among the very finest examples of life-long learnersthis college has produced and a role model for the college and our students. Her success is a reflection ofour college’s success. She would be a strong candidate for president at any community college.

The choice of Shen,w Stout to be our next president carries strong advantages and nodisadvantages, as college representatives have consistently noted in earlier presentations. She is alreadywell *known and respected in the community. She has earned the loyalty and trust of the institution. Shehas demonstrated strong leadership and initiative in her position as Vice President. The transition to herpresidency will be seamless and efficient, supported by all.

The Faculty of Southern State strongly recommends Sherry Stout as our next president. Faculty,may not always agree with her decisions, but we are confident that she will always tap into the collectivewisdom of the institution to make decisions in the best interests of the students and the community.Sherry Stout has a remarkable talent as a leader and motivator within the college and the community. Weneed a leader who is not afraid to lead by example. Personally, it was through Sherry Stout’s guidanceand encouragement and her accomplishments that I decided to pursue my degree in e-learning andtechnology. In reviewing Sherry’s achievements and accolnplishments, it is quite apparent that her firstpriority is Southern State Community College and she has the talent and ability to instill that viewpoint inothers. We now ask that the Board agree with the collective wisdom of the many college personnelinvolved in this decision and choose Sherry Stout as the next president of this college.
