sentence notes down:• The United States began as 13 colonies of

Great Britain. They “declared their INDEPENDENCE” from G.B. after numerous incidents (Tea Party, Boston Massacre, etc.) on July 4th, 1776 and had to defeat the British in the Revolutionary War to secure this freedom. (1775-1783)

TIMELINE• The United States first tried governing

itself under the Articles of Confederation, but it failed because the Govt. was not structured enough to keep the country safe or united. In 1787, the Constitutional Convention was called and the states “framed” a new government that we still operate under today.

Amendments*An amendment is an addition to the Constitution.

Northwest Territory = (Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin

• This land banned slavery from ever existing within the region (Northwest Ordinance of 1787).

• After the Revolutionary War the British were supposed to leave the forts in the N.W. Territory.

• However, the British refused to leave and instigated Natives to attack Americans.

perspective: The Northwest territory was theirs to expand the country in after defeating Britain.

Native perspective: This was their land to stay on and continue their cultures.

Jay’s Treaty

• The treaty achieved the American goal of the withdrawal of units from the British Army from pre-Revolutionary forts that it had failed to hand over in the Northwest Territory of the United States.

A. Battle of Fallen Timbers (1794) the American army defeats a confederation of Indians over tension in the Northwest Territory.
