Enhancements
Electromagnetic Design System 2006C is a standalone product. With 2006C, Agilent EEsof EDA provides a basic level of integration with Advanced Design System (ADS) with an advancement of integration levels provided in future releases.
In future releases of EMDS, you should expect features such as:
• Parameter Sweep
• Optimization
• Integration with GENESYS
• Import of Solid Models
• Remote Simulation (PC to PC and PC to Linux)

Operating Environment
The following problems related to operating environments have been identified.
Incorrect Display of Dialog Boxes
On systems using the Microsoft® Windows® environment, you cannot have your display desktop area set to 800x600 pixels and use large fonts. With this configuration, some Agilent EMDS dialog boxes are too large to display correctly and the application may close. You can use 800x600 with small fonts.
To see the Display settings on Windows 2000®, choose Start > Settings > Control Panel > Display > Settings.
Installation Errors
Microsoft .NET Framework Error
You may encounter an installation error with the message
1603: Error installing Microsoft(R) .NET Framework.
This can be seen if a recent .NET Framework security update has been installed prior to installing EMDS. Specifically, this behavior occurs if security update MS05- 004 was installed prior to installing EMDS.
You will need to remove the .NET Framework security update. To remove the update:
1 Open Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.
2 Open Add or Remove Programs. Be sure that Show Updates is selected.
3 Select Microsoft .NET Framework Hotfix 1.0 (KB886906) or Microsoft .NET Framework Hotfix 1.1 (KB886904) and click Remove.

4 After removing the security update, re- install EMDS.
5 After installing EMDS, it is recommended that you re- install the .NET Framework security updates.
Microsoft has published the KB article 899619 (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en- us;899619) that describes the behavior and provides a solution.
Self-Extraction Error
After the self- extraction process has completed, if you receive the following error,
This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package.
This installation package could not be opened. Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package
you will need to follow the procedure below to extract and run the installation package manually.
1 Save the installation package in a temporary location. Ensure that the directory you choose does not include other setup executables that may be confused with the EMDS executable.
2 Extract the file using WinZip® or an equivalent file utility.
3 Double- click the extracted setup.exe file to launch the installation wizard.

Opening Projects from Agilent Legacy 3D EM Products
Projects constructed using the Agilent 85180 legacy product can be opened in EMDS. However, be aware that:
• Once brought into EMDS, projects cannot be read back into the Agilent 85180 legacy product. You may want to make a copy of your projects before reading them into EMDS.
• Impedance, Calibration, and Polarization lines will need to be reconstructed for any Agilent 85180 project read into EMDS.

Drawing Environment
The following problems have been identified in the Agilent EMDS drawing environment.
Cancelling Commands
To cancel a command from the drawing environment, press the ESC key.
Layer Numbers Limitted for ADS Import
It is possible to define layers in ADS with arbitraty layer numbers; however, only the layer numbers 0- 256 are supported for the ADS to EMDS translation. If your ADS layout contains layer numbers greater than 256, you will need to reset these layer numbers before executing Momentum > 3D EM > Save files for 3D EM.

Simulation
The following problems have been identified in the Agilent EMDS simulators.
Low Frequency Accuracy
Agilent EMDS encounters stability problems when attempting to solve at low frequencies. While there are no distinct frequency limits, use the following guidelines:
• Structures with higher value dielectrics have a higher low- frequency limit.
• Small structures have a higher low- frequency limit.
• Structures with smaller features have a higher low- frequency limit.
Circuit Sources and Symmetry Planes
In Agilent EMDS, the proper scale factors are automatically determined, but will only be correct under the following conditions:
• Symmetric E Plane and Symmetric H Plane boundary conditions (not Perfect E and Perfect H) are used to define the symmetry planes.
• All symmetry planes are mutually orthogonal.
• The circuit sources are properly defined with respect to the symmetry planes:
• Circuit sources should lie completely in Symmetric H Plane boundaries.
• Circuit sources should touch, and be normal to, Symmetric E Plane boundaries.

Post Processor
The following problem has been identified in the Post Processor.
Running Out of Memory
The Post Processor does not terminate when the system runs out of memory. If this should happen, stop the application. Use the Task Manager to cancel the application emds_express.exe.
