Dear friends,

Welcome to Aging Well Month! May is nationally recognized as Older Americans Month by the Administration for Community Living, and we are delighted to join in this nationwide initiative honoring the many advancements made by older adults in our communities.

The theme for Older Americans Month this year — Connect, Create, Contribute — encourages older adults to connect with friends, family, and services; create by engaging in activities that promote learning, health, and personal enrichment; and contribute time, talent, and life experiences to benefit others. We have always recognized the outstanding efforts of older adults in the community. Aging Well Month allows us the opportunity to bring together various community organizations and businesses in a partnership to coordinate a calendar of free educational and social programs — all tailored for older adults to empower them to age well.

Over the last seven years, our annual Aging Well Month celebration has grown from a week- to a month-long celebration and become one of the most anticipated events for older adults in our community. This year, 78 older adult volunteers will be recognized for their contribution to the community and over 75 programs will take place in May at various locations.

Thank you to our Planning Committee who volunteered their time to plan our Aging Well Month celebration. I would also like to extend a special thanks to Community Memorial Foundation — one of the initial supporters of this annual celebration — for their dedication and commitment to aging well programming, including our Aging Well Neighborhood program.

Everyone benefits when they can participate. We encourage you to partake in as many Aging Well Month programs as possible and connect, create, and contribute to continue growing stronger and more diverse communities.

Sincerely,

Debra Verschelde Executive Director

Aging Well Month • May 2019 3

Aging Well Month is now in its 7th year and bigger than ever! We anticipate that over 600 older adults will participate in the more than 75 programs that are planned throughout the month of May, which is recognized nationally as Older Americans Month.

This month-long celebration kicks off with a state proclamation presented at the Aging Well Month Kick Off Luncheon. At this luncheon, older adults from Lyons, Proviso and Riverside townships will be recognized for their volunteer work and the positive impact they have made in the community. For the total list of honorees see page 5.

The Aging Well Month celebration offers engaging, educational, social, free and fun programs held at a variety of locations throughout the area. They are hosted by community organizations, non-profits, businesses, and individuals who all have an interest in the health and well-being of older adults, and are helping all of us to age well! This calendar is your guide to this year’s events. Please take a look and mark your calendar for all the events you wish to attend. The calendar starts on page 10.

For general questions about Aging Well Month, contact Linda Hussey at 708-603-2342 or [email protected]. We hope to you see during Aging Well Month!

4 Aging Well Month • May 2019

For nearly 50 years, Aging Care Connections has been a leader in providing comprehensive, client-centered programs that focus on improving the quality of life of older adults. As individuals age, so do lifestyles. At Aging Care Connections, we are advisors on all matters related to the issues facing older adults as they age. We not only offer programs, but also have the most comprehensive information on programs and services in the community that help older adults find solutions to their emotional, physical, mental, financial and healthy living needs.

Located in La Grange, Aging Care Connections serves over 8,000 older adults, age 60 and older, and their caregivers and families from 38 communities in the Lyons, Proviso, Norwood Park, Riverside and Leyden townships. With a mission “to enrich the quality of life in our community by providing older adults and their families with guidance and support that enhances the ability to age well,” our programs are delivered by a team of highly skilled, objective and unbiased experts.

Aging Care Connections’ Aging Well Neighborhood program was created five years ago with a grant from Community Memorial Foundation. The program brings together older adults, businesses, non-profits, healthcare providers and social services to create a “Health Neighborhood” that promotes life-long wellness, supports aging at home, addresses chronic conditions, offers health education, and helps build an age-friendly community. Integrating health care and social supports has been proven to help individuals remain in their community and even reduce hospital re-admissions.

With continued funding from Community Memorial Foundation and The Russell and Josephine Kott Memorial Charitable Trust, we are working together to improve overall health, increase health literacy, raise awareness of available resources, reduce hospital re-admissions, increase cross-sector referrals, decrease social isolation, and help individuals to age well in their communities. Sign up to get alerts about programs, events and activities by contacting Alyson Scanlon at 708-603-2259 or [email protected].
